- Here they are then. The 7 reasons why I bought a 2007 Audi A4 S-Line Avant 2.0 TFSI Quattro.
1. reason no.1 then- practicality. For me practicality is having a car with more than 2 x doors. This does so it works. It makes life with small people who are less small than they used to be easier. It saves them from clambering in and out and saves you your sanity as you wait for them to do it. No matter how much you say kids won’t change you and no matter how much you try to rebel against family cars the truth is with kids, back doors are just easier and therefore better.
2. Budget, without going into specifics the car needed to be less than £4 or 5k and it also needed to not be in the dearer car tax band here in the UK. This is a stop gap car and £570 a year car tax for a car you’re not planning on keeping very long when you already have a high tax band car is a bit hard to swallow.
3. Performance, having said that though we’re not really used to driving cars that are slow. My minimum criteria is 0-60 in under 8 seconds. This isn’t so we can go tearing up the Surrey countryside but more so you pull out of junctions and get up to speed when you need to.
4. 4wd, for the last 10years at least we’ve always had a 4wd in the fleet. The thought of not having one was a bit weird. Yes you don’t really need it most of the time but sometimes you do. The grip in this Quattro on the greasy, leaf strewn, damp Surrey backroads is phenomenal and so worth the extra over the normal 2wd
5. Cloth interior. There I said it. For years we’ve allowed ourselves to be seduced by the apparent luxury of a leather interior. So much so our kids are so used to seeing leather in cars that when we bought the camper with its fabric interior they thought it was an upgrade. They couldn’t understand why leather was the premium option when it gets hot in the winter, cold in the summer and allows you to slide about all over the place. Do you know what? They were right. Little did they know that our leather fetish came from the need to keep things clean as a result of them being small children. Now they’re older they’re a bit better at not melting chocolate buttons into their seats.
6. Small one here but the last few cars we’ve had didn’t have steering wheel buttons. I like steering wheel buttons. To me buttons on a steering wheel are like a double over cooker. Sure you can live without them but they just make life a little bit easier.
7. Auto- *** ideally the car needed to be an auto. Unless your car is very small, a sports car or a specialist 4wd autos in 2019 are just better and manuals are tedious. Except when the manual equivalent is so easy to use. Honestly the clutch and gear change in this car is by far one of the easiest I’ve ever used. With the armrest down it’s so easy to drive it isn’t really tedious at all. It also gives you a better feel and ultimately better control over the car that I don’t think you’d get from an auto.

Nice little vid :) I have a 2005 2.0 TSFI S-Line which I like a great deal :) To keep the engine sweet in these cars you are best to over-service them, do an oil change every 5k and have the cam-follower checked every 10k.

@vulturesuc4 and @Pedal Loud , could use some advice, i'm going to view a 2005 TSFI S-Line on Sunday, has 125k on the clock with full service history. Never owned an Audi before, could you give me an idea on what i'm looking for so it doesn't leave me out of pocket in the near future?

Yeh, they're great cars. The 2.0 TFSI quattro seems to be fairly rare in the UK. How many miles does your have?
Here I am in the USA, with that very same car. I am agreeing with you on the all the points. The 6 Speed Manual is fun to use, in a fun package. I do wish the engine had more low-end torque, but give it a few more revs and it pulls just fine. Have had to replace the brakes, a couple struts and a control arm, and just the other day the PCV valve. The car feels brand new again.

I still smile every time I get in the A4. I have lots of cars but this one really has got under my skin. I love the matter of fact nature of it. It just does what it needs to do really really well and feels so comfortable, solid and planted.

Just bought an 07 plate 2.0TDI B7 A4, loving it but a little worried about the CVT transmission being an issue as I've heard they have a shorter lifespan/are expensive to fix or replace. Does anyone else have experience with the automatic 7 speed variant?

Hi, did you fit the mud flaps to the Audi ? I have the same as yours, but with the 3.0 tdi engine (pre dpf) .Mine seems a bit of an odd spec, its got the big diesel and auto dimming mirrors, which i consider high spec, but it had the base model stereo (iv'e changed to rns-e now) and no bi xenon headlamps. Totally agreed on all your points, I dread the day I have to find a replacement for it. Regards, Richard.
Yeh, they do have a habit of getting under your skin. No the mud flaps were already on. Not sure if they're factory or not. Hadn't really noticed them until doing more videos on the A4 and it was pointed out.

Love the video but I think people should know that after 100k auto will be on its way out but manual will do 300k as long as you look after it
Howdy, following our chat on TT DSG, I am ironically considering an A4 B7 (3.0tdi auto convertible as an interim car!) - Would consider more aurally revealing, inexpensive exhaust system and re-map...aiming for c 300bhp - Have u heard these, straight piped? - Also 0-60 5.5 secs?!

Ex Audi mechanic...previously owned all sorts from a VW Polo Coupe!..my first car! Then an Escort RS Turbo (Series 1), amongst others a Nissan 200SX Turbo...(Navara Aventura for practical reasons 😴) and now a B7 3.0 TDI Quattro... anyway, obviously slightly bias due to my history with Audi but the choice of owning one is no coincidence - I wouldn’t own anything other than a Quattro now. S4 possibly on the cards next but quite frankly, after adding 100k miles to my current B7 and loving every hassle free mile, i’m not sure I need to do anything other than contemplate an AmD chip and upgrade the brakes and suspension for a fraction of the cost of changing up to a B8 S4. 🤔
Wow, brilliant. I know what you mean. Once you've owned a few makes and models then you own an Audi it really makes you realise how good they are. They aren't without their problems but overall I do find them so well made and comfortable. Is the B7 an Avant?
Pedal Loud - Yes, Avant S line. Now at 165k miles. Teased the average mpg up to 41-43mpg (albeit the no doubt optimistic dash figures) and have driven 400 mile round trips in it, with only the original stereo to dislike.

@@Monkey80llx I got the same car than yours last week, same engine (204 hp) and avant also. It has 317.000 km and I have to say I love it. Tomorrow I will drive 700 km back home so I’ll see how it behaves in long distances.
it doesn't have 4 wheel drive though does it? it has all wheel drive? there actually is a little bit of a difference but either way its more helpful than 2 wheel drive

Get one with the timing chain already done. It's a $300 part but it'll cost you a whole engine to pay your mechanic.

Not sure? eBay maybe? I'm impressed with how fresh and new the cloth still looks after all this time. Audi really know how to build the interior of a car to last.

I bought a 2006 B7 170 TDI S-Line from a Romanian drug dealer for three hundred quid last June. He advertised it on Facebook.
Both front wings and the bonnet had baseball bat sized dents of which he seemed to be very proud. He also told me it was DPF free and "chipped" to do 140mph. None of that is true, but it has never failed an MOT, has a full service history and drives like a brand new car considering it has done 96K.
Check under the back seats for hard cash and leftovers. The spare wheel well is likely to have a few weapons too. Use them wisely. BMWs and Porsches are great and all but you know if you're tooled up... Enjoy the car man and thanks for watching!!

I’m thinking of getting a 06 Audi A4 2.0 tfsi as my first car but it is on 165k miles with one owner and full service history, what is the reliability like on these audis?
Not bad. Check for good history etc. should have a bit more life in it yet!

Change the front headlights, change the ligh bulbs to blue inside and above the number plate.
I got a 2008 s line love it. Ecs tuning has great parts for good prices too love em

I'm looking at few of these audi a4's I do like the S line models, want as my next car i have one years NCB, the only engines I'm looking is 1.9tdi and 2.0tdi no petrol engines, and also I do like manual but im wondering if auto are any good with these cars I know they have their issues but im thinking to have an auto for one year and then get manual as my left leg has pain as I had fall and injured it so pressing clutch is abit hard depending on clutch feed back also I usally drive local and very less on highway.
Auto would work for you. Think they’re pretty reliable.

What money did you put into this car etc and did you run it on good tyres ?
The rears were done before we got it and we put new lower cost tyres on the front. We're not over maintaining it. It's mainly local garage servicing. It's a workhorse. If things break we'll fix but we're not overdoing it on preventative maintenance as it was really only a stop gap car. Nothing major has broken, we bought it with 112k miles and its now on about 120k miles.
@@damos_cars Shame...Its for sale and Quattros get iffy when the tyres etc are different MM and types .Someone will buy it depending on those arches etc .
had mine 8 years now nearly at 200k miles on her and never had a problem with it at all

@@musaozturk9989 thanks! The condition was alright. The previous owner damaged it slightly while driving out of the gerade. Luckily there is only a minor damage. But it was still quite cheap (3300€) and runs good.

I've always had Audi and I've also had this car, I've had a B7 1.9 Tdi 116 PS, I've driven 480,000 km and I've never had a problem. I think the B7 is one of the best built cars by Audi.

@@damos_cars yes in addition to the A4 I had an Audi 80 1.6 turbo diesel and then two Audi A3s, a 1.9 Tdi 105 hp sold with 265,000 km and a 2.0 Tdi 2.0 Tdi 140 hp sold with 348,000 km. I currently own an A3 2.0 Tdi 150hp with 130,000km and it is still running in. But the absolute best was the A4 B7

2.0tfsi has good power at high revs but its a very highly strung engine with very very poor reliability. Cam timing chain and tensioner likes to disintegrate and smash intake valves, balance shift module and oil pump are also chain driven from the crank, very prone to problems, intake valves get covered in sludge due to direct injection, rear main seal leaks like a sieve. Convoluted engine design leads to poor reliability

No contest, it has to be Audi, all day, every day, nothing comes close, reliability, performance, economy, comfort, build quality, just bought an A4 Avant (170) buy the best, leave the rest.

I like the look of these cars, but a lot of luck is needed because Audi cars are notorious for mechanical problems.

Pedal Loud Less carbon build up with the MPI cleaning the valves, no high pressure fuel pump to fail and ruin the cam. Check and update that cam follower for the fuel pump when you purchase a TFSI, as you already know.

Indeed! 1.8T is one of the most reliable VW Group engines and already a legend. I'm looking for Audi a4 with 1.8T 163 bhp or more:)
Hmm, is it not the 2.0fsi (no turbo) that has the issues? Having owned a 1.8T engined car, the 180bhp version, I would say they are good engines and still return a decent mpg by modern standards for a 20+ year old engine design. However they aren’t bomb proof, a lot of vacuum related issues, none that are big show stopper issues but niggly and annoying and hard to troubleshoot, things like hesitations, boost leaks, misfires etc.
I would never buy that car. The steering wheel is on the wrong side

2.0T was a bad decision... It has so much flaws!
I think we'll have to agree to differ. Whilst it's not perfect it really does the job for us and has been very reliable even with 118k miles on it.
Pedal Loud - Damo on Cars that’s great 👌 but they are known for a lot of problems...
like burning oil, bad crankcase ventilation, broken K03 turbocharger and some other smaller stuff.
Its great that you went with a manual, the Multitronic CVT Transmission is a time bomb. first gen. DSG isn’t that great either.
the rest of the B7’s parts are very reliable, It’s basically a updated and facelifted B6.

Thats why I went for the 3.2 but I found out it drinks gas like an elephant drinks water..
