- It's loud, it's fast, it's striped. And it's making hot-rodding hot again. An artistic expression of drag-racing culture, the hand-crafted 1934 Ford Coupe known as Saint Christopher must be doing something right. Crowned 2023 Hot Rod of the Year, the 331ci Hemi-powered masterpiece is a polarizing pinnacle of perfection with its intricate gold-leaf striping, dummied mechanical fuel injection, hidden Holley EFI, and cleverly-placed radiator.
Nicole ventures to South City Rod & Custom to meet with Bill Ganahl, the only person who could pull off Coby Gewertz's idea for his holy hot rod, unraveling the theory and method behind their design and cruising the Patron Saint of Travel through the California country side.
MORE ABOUT BILL GANAHL:
Son of the late magazine editor and hot-rodder Pat Ganahl, Bill owns and operates South City Rod & Custom in Hayward, California, full production shop specializing in complete custom builds.

I think I say it often but Nicole's enthusiasm is infectious. You can really tell she enjoys the vehicles and the craftmanship. And watching them trust her to drive their vehicles is really impressive.
Agreed. Seeing the smiles in both their faces while driving my car just made my day.
Thank you...we appreciate your support!!
Exactly why I enjoy these videos so much. Yes the cars are cool and the workmanship impressive but without Nicole I suspect the videos would not be near as fun or interesting the watch
How nice...thank you!!
@@propdoctor21564
I second that emotion. 🤗
You don't need any stereos in a car when they sound like this. This thing makes bad ass music.
Yes it does!!! Thank you for watching!
"I suspect that he's seen it." I love that you said that, Nicole. I've read so many articles by Pat Ganahl over the years. HIs son did a really great job, and I am sure that his father is pleased.
Thank you...we feel the same!!
One thing I'm sure of is that he would tell me whether he liked it or not!!! But I'm hoping he's a fan wherever he is!
@@SouthCityRodandCustom Stunning car mate, the attention to detail throughout is spectacular.
C/S Pat Ganahl.
The look on Nicole’s face is hilarious when she starts it up. Lol
Haha...Thank you for watching!!
Hi Nicole

love it or hate it, you can't deny it's a gem of a car. I personally love the car, unique in a sea of hot rods that all look similar! Excellent work. The way Bill drove it for the burnout!!! No fear, none! "is that your fingers?! Ugh!" LOL
Haha!! Thank you so much for the comment!! We're so glad you enjoyed watching!
Now that what a hotrod supposed to sound like, that's a badass machine and a very unique look. Just the sound of that motor would make me want to drive it everywhere all day long. Thanks for the show Nicole, I really enjoyed the ride.
Thank you so much for watching!! We're glad you enjoyed it!!
Thank you!
I judge at the pismo show and the second I saw this car I fell in love with it. Gold Class Winner 23! Seeing it in person is an experience. Absolutely brilliant. Great video and I am jealous.

That was my observation as well. They sure looked to be having a great time.
It's ny day off and I'm about to head off to the Tire Shop.
Nope, a new Detour episode. I'm guess I'm not leaving for a half hour ☺️
Love it!! Thanks for watching!!
That was great. I don’t know whether you and Bill have known each other for years, but it looks like you had a really relaxed and comfortable vibe going on.
What an amazing hot rod.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching!!
I met Nicole just before we filmed this... but we get along great! Already feel like old friends
It's nice seeing a car that good looking where they aren't afraid of dropping the hammer
Thank you...we're so glad you enjoyed watching!!!
I don't have a truck and trailer .... so it's gotta be driven.
The craftsmanship, the touch of love on the entire beauty, freaking wild!
... And it's drivable! Bill rules. I couldn't be happier.
Yes..we agree!! Thank you for watching!!
Thank you! It was a lot of fun to take Coby's amazing vision and make it a reality!
A bolt on parts catalog and a credit card are one thing. But people that spend untold hours in forethought, design and planning, then hand fabricating and fitting things together until they mate and function perfectly understand the time and tediousness involved in the process. Only these people can have a true appreciation for the finished product. Well done to you all.
A message to Nicole's husband. I am highly envious sir, well done to you as well.
Thank you so much for watching!! Nice comment!!
Thank you. Definitely a credit to Bill and his team. They are the real deal.
Holy Sweet Mother of Dammmit Kids y'all had me at 34' Ford. Then y'all just kept making this episode better and better. That is One Sweet ride. Thank you Nicole and your crew for bringing this one to us. May y'all have a good one. Have fun take care

The mention of -Rod & Custom- magazine brought back memories. I subscribed to it 1957-1961 (and still have most of those copies).
Awesome!! Thanks for sharing!!
Mid 50's and never owned a Ford. But.... Nicole's reaction on the first start up is priceless.
Thank you for watching!!
Always the best content!! Why hasn’t Discovery or TLC given The Detour a series?? Get it together people. Omg I’m sure Bill did not expect to have so much fun in that passenger seat. He was like a kid on a roller coaster and couldn’t stop smiling.❤❤ The energy was infectious thanks 😊😊

Nicole, your interviewing style is awesome. Your reaction to the first start up is why I enjoy your channel so much. You are so genuine, it's infectious. What a beautiful piece of machinery, I love the back story as much as the car. Well done.
Thank you so much!! I appreciate that!! Glad you enjoy watching!!
Thanks Jason.
That was cool.
You both looked like two kids in a candie shop. The smile and nodding head of Bill says it all. All I can say is this was your best one yet Nicole. 🤗👍👍🤔
Their smiles were my favorite part as well. Appreciate that you enjoyed it as much as I did.

That burnout was insane. What a great car. M/T valve covers are just perfect!

And every time she took off from a stop he was just grinning through each gear. They both enjoyed that beast of a hot rod!!!
Yes...it was so much fun!! Thank you for watching!!
Your presentation is always high quality, and your enthusiasm really shines through. I'm not a fan of the full fender style rods, but I love the attention to detail, and the build quality on this one. The paint job is also very cool!
Thank you for the comment!! We appreciate you watching...glad you like it!!
I just got so many ideas for my factory five cobra build from this vid. Have been thinking of similar, solids, but similar colors for my build. Now I have so much more thinking to do.
Great vid and build yall.
Awesome...best of luck with your build!!
The craftsmanship on the hot rod was great , but your genuine enthusiasm for the cars you drive is always great to watch

Absolutely in love with this car. I think this is the only time i've seen the builder egg Nicole on to go faster. Awesome high quality video, as usual.
We're so glad you enjoyed watching!! Thank you!!
Love it. A beautiful video that captures the sound and feeling of an amazing hot rod. Incredible workmanship in all of the details. Love to see it rolling too and not tucked away in some garage. What a blast this would be to cruise the strip. The paint job very wild, I dig all the louvers and hiding modern FI inside the old school housing.
Thank you so much for watching!!
As an engineer I can appreciate the build quality, fit and finish, and pure functionally. All in a very stylish package.
Thank you! I was actually waiting for "BUT" ... but there wasn't one.
We're so glad you approve!!!
When I was a little fella 5 decades ago this is what hot rodding was all about.
Thanks Nicole for bringing us this fine time machine to savour and the team that spent thousands of hours is no less deserving of an awesome accolade. ✔️👍🏻😁
Thank you so much!! We appreciate you watching...glad you approve!!!
Yea!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 What a great episode and a beautiful “Hot Rod”. 60’s and 70’s were my hay days for that paint style. Many of us with our V8 hot rods know very well how you feel between gears hearing that sound. Gets the adrenaline flowing huh? I look forward to every episode 🫵🏻👍🏻♥️
We're so glad you enjoyed watching!! Thank you!!
Billy has one of the best shops in the country, with a very talented crew. They helped us complete our magazine (HOT CARS) project car a couple of years back and did a fantastic job!

Great looking hot rod and great driving as usual 👍
Thanks 👍 Glad you like it!!
I'm a Brit who subscribed to all those hot rod mags back in the 80's. Just love hot rod's!!! I was a teen then now i'm 53 and the 34 is still my fave. Totally love it!! The paint job's bangin'!!!
That's awesome!! Thank you so much for watching!!
Happy to have ya on board .
Really sweet car! When I was growing up it wasn't uncommon to see older Fords with Chrysler drive trains in them. My older brother's best friend had a hot rod Ford with a 340 6 pack in it. That was in the late 70's. The paint job I instantly associated with the 60's. Really like the paint job and the quality of it.
We're so glad you like it!! Thank you for watching!!
Thank you, it's nice when someone "gets" the paint job... obviously not everyone understands the inspiration!
What an unusual paint scheme on a car. Loved your video Nicole and I'm loving me T- Shirt and decal. Thank you for sharing this video with us.

Beautiful ride! Awesome lady! Awesome gent! Thank you for clean fun entertainment. Love your channel!!!

Amazing Hot Rod. Outstanding workmanship and such attention to detail. Congratulations on the win at the Good Guys show. After seeing this, it's easy to see why you won...

This is a piece of art! Both the show and the car are bold yet respectful... Amazing!
Thank you...much appreciated!! We're glad you enjoyed watching!!

Such a beautiful car. Glad to see it on the road … and hauling! What a great sound! 👏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching!!
Best car show on CZcams. I watch on my home theater and always raise the volume to 11 to hear those sweet engines. Neighbors probably think I'm insane.
Wow, thanks! We're so glad you enjoy watching!!
I did similar, to me it sounds just like the beginning of “409” by The Beach Boys ! My 4 speed , dual quad , posi-traction 409!!
My neighbors are gonna be pissed. The car is mighty loud.
Maybe you could have some “Church Equipped” branded barf bags, Ear plugs and eye shades… similar to the kit they give you on long flights…. It would be a fabulous way to meet all the neighbors! :)
Sounds like a pist off P-38 or P-51 strafing your ass
This channel and Nicole goes in so many directions and the cars chosen are perfectly all over the place - I love it! Thank you again Nicole for this new episode. The car was out of this world cool and the sound of that engine was pure music. I love that pure American hot rod sound when they were sitting at a stop street. If I had this car, I would start it every day and just let it idle so I could hear that sound.
Yes!!! Couldn't agree more!! Thank you for watching!!
I love the rawness of the engine and wheels countered with the colors and details if the paintwork. Great '60's vibe that has been long lost. Great job by Coby and the crew and a great presentation and interview by Nicole. This will be an icon.
Thank you so much for watching...we're glad you approve!!
Another masterpiece video by NICOLE who is the coolest woman on the planet ! I LOVE seeing your face when you start the car up...... and I must say you really took this car for a great ride ! Watching YOU is just as fun as watching the car ! Love how you come so close to the cars owner !
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching!
What a beautiful car and sound…. Such incredible creativity and thought into every part of the car….Bill and Coby, your parents are proud no matter where they are.
Yes...we agree!! Thank you!!
Thank you, this was a special build for sure with all of us losing our dads along the process... but we're hoping they're all smiling down on us right now!
Thank you! Dad asked every day if the car was done right up until his passing.
I like it... I like it a-lot! I love Lifesavers candy inspired paint jobs. 60's-70's had the coolest paint styles.
Thank you so much for watching! We're glad you enjoyed!!
though I'm not into hot rods but i cannot deny that they did great job and deserve the prize they get .
Thank you for watching!!
The paint is absolutely stunning, clearly well thought out and just as well implemented and sets this thing apart. I suspect those hating on it for that reason are also not very fun at parties. 😝
We appreciate you watching...glad you like it!!
Correc. LOTS of planning to get the stripes looking right, but haters will always hate.
I'm not sure who had the better time on this drive Nicole or Bill. They both seemed to be having a blast and Bill was smiling the whole time. I "grew up" reading Everything that Pat wrote. Even tho I never met him he was a big influence in my car life. I miss his writing very much. And as the Late Great Gray Baskerville said It's Soooo Bitchin.'
