    No, no No! Zeos, don't use a pillow case to 'protect' your L700s from dust. That will do the exact opposite. Those of us who have been engine builders know you never use any cloth material to cover your critical parts during a rebuild, because cloth gathers and holds dust (and other foreign matter) and gets more as you move it around. Always use paper or plastic (bags in your case).

    I know of at least one sound engineer at Olympic studios in London who used Stax headphones. So in answer to your question it's entirely possible that some artists have heard their music through Stax. Bear in mind this was the 1980s though.

    • @Legoguy1237
      @Legoguy1237 Před 4 lety +3

      But to be honest even Stax isn't being in the room with the instrument. I guess that answers the question of "did the artist ever hear their own music". Yes, every time they played it.

      @@benis9965 It cannot kill you without the amperage to let it properly flow through your body. Your skin is a very good insulator so even a very high voltage signal will not harm you if it is just purely voltage. If you've ever seen a Van Der Graaf generator, those produce upwards of 100,000 volts but you can touch them just fine.

    • @harris0254
      @harris0254 Před 3 lety +3

      Contrary to Popular belief. amperage or flow of current is what kills you and not voltage, but they need each other. Voltage is there to open the door for current to get in. (above 50V AC or 100VDC is the start of the dangerous breakthrough point for human bodies, current then freely flows as much as can be supplied by your output power affecting mostly your own human electrical system I.e the pulse signals beating your heart) and at 580V that door is so wide open but fortunately there's almost no current flowing in your body in this case because the amp is highly current limited, but only on the amp's output! but if you open up the amp and start fiddling around with the innards, that's another story.

    • @Cockalicious
      @Cockalicious Před 3 lety +1

      @@harris0254 you're not totally right, because at 580 volts the current is high no matter what, for a fixed resistance of course. If the voltage is high the current is high and there's no way to limit it without changing the resistance.

    Hi Zeos,
    I got my first Stax Earspeakers in 1982 and they were the SR-5’s with an SRD-6 Energisers, it was my twenty first birthday present and the best present I’ve ever been given. They are used every day and still work as good as the day I got them. I also purchased some SRX MkIII’s with SRD -7 energisers which are different, but not better. Two years ago I purchased a set of the Stax L300 Limited 80 Anniversary Edition which are great and on par with your L700’s. These are hooked up to a SRM-1 MkII professional Stax amplifier which sounds fantastic. I still love my SR-5s hooked up to my Vacuumstate FVP5 preamplifier, Wyred4Sound dac and ice power - power amplifier, it’s just magic. I’ve never looked at another headphone since. Other than my Edifier W860NB ANC headphones for travelling. They are pretty ordinary in comparison. Love your work and cat,

      Benis Hi Benin’s, The SR-5 and SRX Mark 3’s are all metal and there is no plastic on the head bands. As much as I love my newer L100 Limited Editions I am somewhat disappointed by build quality, but this has always been the way with Lamda’s until now with the newest L700s which have metal head bands. I cannot tell you how good my oldest SR-5’s are when paired with the right electronics. These will out live me.

    • @ilkling
      @ilkling Před rokem +1

      Excellent build quality of those older Stax models for sure. I own a pair of the SRL-700s and still use an old pair of SRX Mk3s when listening on my stereo setup in the living room. The 700s live by my computer and perfectly integrate with the more pure digital sources and higher end recording/processing/interfacing gear I use. I love them dearly and understand their well-refined and resolving nature will be best there. BUT those Mk3s... despite them struggling with bass, when you find the right sounding amp to feed them, they do something special that I don't get from the 700s or any other headphone. It's as if there are some subtleties throughout the mids and highs that come out and reveal new detail in an analytically mind-boggling way. They definitely shine when plugged into a decent old-school stereo integrated amp with the classic bass/mid/treble settings and phono stage stuff. I use an old Rotel RA-1412 to drive my living room setup, and you can easily get the bass sounding good enough on the Mk3s with the right settings. It's like any other headphone would reveal diminishing returns and often sound rolled off in the highs from such amps, but the Mk3s were born and raised for that shit and will happily serve you the extra detail and higher frequencies with a side of the finest chicken momo just because it's cool like that.@@paulpavlou9294

    Yeah I have the 95X. Though think I need to send them to get cleaned out and repaired as the wire seems to have gotten lose on the Y split and the channels on the amp seem to have slowly gotten really badly imbalanced as time has gone on. Now they don't raise in volume at the same speed anymore which is pretty annoying. Good thing Koss has a life time waranty so all I have to do is pay shipping and done. Heard some people say they will even replace the wire if you didn't even ask for it and they always clean them out as really they are the only ones who can.

    • @Skylancer727
      @Skylancer727 Před 4 lety +2

      Electrostatics have bass, I have the 95X, it's just that slam is weak. The bass is there just not planar quality and the slam is almost nonexistent, you more hear the sub bass and the reverb of it and not the initial bang. It's actually kinda odd; I kinda like it. The 95X isn't what I would call base light as I honestly think it sounds about as good as my Ether CX, just the CX has way more slam which Mr. Speakers was never known for anyways. Personally I listen to nearly everything on both headphones. Personally I like EDM more on the 95X as it feels like the song is more filled out while the CX kinda makes it more a blur behind the bass.
      I kinda feel everyone trying to explain what electrostatic headphones sound like either go far too in depth on the finer details on what makes them so odd or just give a basic feel of what's wrong like "it's not very bassy". If you are comparing them to planars, no, the planars definitely have more slam but I wouldn't call it that weak bass-wise but if all you care about bass is the slam, yeah it is pretty petty. The best example is the noise you hear in Death Stranding when you use the Q pip. On planars it sounds like you just got slammed by a pressure wave while on the 95X it only sounds like it passed by you as you don't hear the initial impact. It's like comparing an explosion close up to one half a mile away. From that distance it still sounds like an explosion but it more just sounds like the secondary pressure wave not the bang.
      Really like some EDM on them and old rock songs from the 70s-early 2000s sound incredible on them, if they are well recorded. Can't say there is much they play bad with other than poorly recorded audio as they are very precise. Turned on 3005 by Childish Gambino to confirm I'm not just crazy about that and yeah the bass is still louder than the vocals. It just doesn't have the slam. Some people might like that and others probably would hate that. It's really personal preference. Just really badly recorded music really stands out as worse than the rest.
      I will stress though that the 95X, if you ever get them, take a ton of burn in till they get really good. When I first got them they sounded pretty bright with very little bass but after like 4 months using them with my computer for gaming I came back to music and thought none of my headphones sounded nearly as good. Spacial awareness was the main reason I bought them though as imaging is incredible on them. Considering I got these for $400 on sale I don't regret it. Though was kinda pissed to see it dropped to $350 5 days later. XD

Then I'll upgrade to their day amp for $1400. Just note the L700 has a really odd sound frequency from what I hear and can see from frequency graphs. Why many go with the 9s instead but I don't have $10K to throw away.

      @@11clouds Oh and one more thing. Some people like Max Settings have said they don't like electrostatic headphones as they have a tinny sound to the tamber. I can't say I really agree with him though but it is something I've seen others say as well. It seems to be something people like me and those on R Ear Speakers don't seem to hear though as to me they sound like Z says that there just isn't headphones on my head. To me it always sounded like the audio isn't colored so perhaps it's those people are too used to planars or are just way more bright sensitive?
      Not sure as I thought the MSR7s Z gave a fair review to were were too symblent for my taste and really bright basically killing the rest of the range. Hard to say as I really am not hearing what they are, but Max Settings directly said he would take planars over them any day and claimed the Diana's are more what everyone claims Stax are so take that as you will. I think it might just be these people not being used to the headphone being so open as they really are odd first time you put them on. No planar is nearly as open.

      @Tasunke How much money you pay for something is not always an indication of its performance. If that were the case you would not need reviews, you'd simply buy the most expensive item you could afford.

    • @JDS_im
      @JDS_im Před 4 lety

      @Tasunke I always take Z's reviews with a boulder of salt, but I've had several opportunities to audition the Solaris with a bunch of top dog headphones, and I can't say anything other than it was the first amp ever that got my jaw dropping from how it sounds. Most notably with a Susvara. I don't own a Susvara myself, but if I did I'd get a Solaris with it. And I've heard the Susvara on a few more amps, in fact the Solaris was the least expensive amp I've tried yet it still turned out to be the clear winner.
      Only amp I've heard that sounded better to me than the Solaris, was a Feliks Audio Euforia. Doesn't have the power for Susvara's (although it drives LCD-4's properly) or Stax output or what have you. It's a purely single-ended OTL amp, which is a great thing, because there are no compromises for more bells and whistles and you don't pay for features you don't need. All the money went into perfecting the single-ended output without using an output transformer. Once I heard it, I bought it almost immediatly lol. I use it with Empyreans, HD 660S and in the near future a ZMF Vérité Closed as well. And I'm not so easily convinced to spend that much money on an amp. For context, my main SS amp is just an Asgard 3 (which I love though), and I still haven't found any solid-state amp at any price that was good enough to make me want to upgrade to it.

    • @JDS_im
      @JDS_im Před 4 lety

      @Tasunke Yeah hearing the Empyrean on the Solaris is what convinced me to dive deeper into tubes in the hope to find something less expensive and feature-rich than the Solaris but sounding somewhere in that league. Eventually during my tube auditioning adventures, when I first heard the Euforia I was sold within minutes. Kept listening for like 45 minutes to find any compromises but didn't find any. So that was an easy decision for me.
      Actually I've also auditioned the Fidelice Precision alongside the Solaris. For sure a fantastic solid-state AIO, but as with every solid-state I've had the chance to try, it just didn't quite do enough to convince me. The Solaris with the DAC option also costs the same as the Fidelice, and I guess I'm just a sucker for tubes, but yeah it wasn't really a competition there. :P

      @@DimIsHigh Pink Floyd is recorded like most of other rock and pop of the era -- not particularly well nor particularly poorly. Instruments and vocals are articulate enough and do not smother one another, but the soundstage is very studio-like. There is more dynamic range than in modern pop/rock recordings, of course. The remastered Dark Side of The Moon can sound a tad strident and aggressive from time to time, probably owing to the remastering and "modernization" of the sound.

    Hey! I have been searching the internet for a long, awful time. I have watched countless of your episodes on reviews and information about headphones, dacs, and amps. I am new to audio and I am looking for the best bang to the buck headphones for gaming. No no, I have not chosen any Razer or Corsair headphones. I have chosen the TYGR 300R. I have seen that people would prefer to hookup an amp to the headphones. One that they recommend was the hundred dollar Liquid Spark. Due to its 50 ohm output it said to definitely help with deeper bass and fix some of its mid and high range sounds. I am using a pc and I would then need a dac to convert my pc audio to analog for my headphones to work. If you have any suggestions that will not break the bank (no more than 200 for both an amp, dac, or dacamp) than PLEASE reply to me. Thank you so much!

    Don't be that guy Zeos, it's the voltage that forces the amperage that will kill you. If it's a fixed 600V supply the amperage it delivers it's completely irrelevant as that will adapt to the load due to Ohm's law.
    Fixed current supplies don't really exist, as the voltage required to force a current will be too high to produce once the load increases in resistance. They're usually used in electronics, where the numbers involved are very small.
    Again, voltage is fixed and that difference in potential energy will kill you, amperage is SUPPLIED as the power consumption adapts to the load.
