The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

68 years ago! Harry, at 94, is still with us...
He is a hero in many ways.
wow, just wow! he has good genes, and a good soul!
@@Dion_Mustard Harry's 1959 album Belafonte At Carnegie Hall is the best "Live" recording ever made. TIMELESS !!! Love all his records. :>)
Now he's gone 4/25/2023😢
Rest in peace.❤️✨️😩
The passing of Harry Belafonte is a great loss for the music industry and humanity. His talent, passion, and commitment to equality will always be remembered.
What he left us tho... Hoping generations from now can appreciate the man, his truth and talent..
The world lost a very good man. I saw him at his concert in Nürnberg a very long time ago. He did so much for the black people. Rest in peace Harry, I will never forget you! 🤗🤗🤗
My kids loved Harry Belafonte's music when they were young, they'd dance around like popcorning gerbils every time I played one of his songs. I was 3 years old when this performance was on TV, my parents always watched The Ed Sullivan Show, I'd like to know if I was awake to see it and how I reacted!
You will never know.
@@incumbentvinyl9291 True that!
RIP Harry!! What a legacy...
I can't stop smiling!
Such an energetic and soulful artist. Love Belafonte ❤
Takes me to the movie Beetle Juice.
He could've sang the banana boat song, Day-o. Love when he takes his jacket off... getting down to business with Matilda! Thank you for sharing ! 💖
Shake Shake Shake Señora! 😎
@@MostlyBrenda 👌😎

So young and charming🍀🌹❤️
PHENOMENAL PHENOMENAL 🔥🔥🔥🔥🤩🤩🤩🤩
I watched an interview with Smokey Robinson who said he idolised this man. You can see some similarities between the two, their mannerisms, how they dress etc.
Talented gorgeous man
亡き父の思い出の歌です。
上げてくれてありがとうございます。感謝😭
Bye, excellent man.
Can anyone track down Matilda? She’s sounds like a sneaky beast!
😄😄😄
She and Runaround Sue are partners in crime.

Timeless genius
I like herry Belafonte classic music
Since I was a child I've listened to his songs.
I'm 59 now and still listening
Muito bom
I'm 87 and listening in 2023
Saw him in Toronto in 1982. He didn’t sing Matilda but it was the concert by which all subsequent concerts were compared. Harry was the best - by a mile!
R.I.P
2023-04-25 R.I.P. Harry....
Un.bon.svn.merci.
🙏☀️💚🧚♀️🌸😌
Matilda reminds me of some of my girlfriends when I worked in Jamaica for 15 years as a boat captain
Rip!😢
Harry Belafonte may be the only artist to have done two different "Matilda" songs. He also recorded the Australian standard "Waltzing Matilda". This song was done as a parody by Allan Sherman as "My Zelda" and as a variation by Jimmy Soul as "Twistin' Matilda". Although Chubby Checker also did a song called "Twistin' Matilda", it was based on "Waltzing Matilda".
CHUBBY !!
Is he not still Twisting?
Need to listen to the lyrics and keep singing with him. Rest in peace . But I am sad to say....he is not coming back
It his time off...
Matilda era uno de mis temas preferidos.
Yes
single camera. Man I'd love to have seen his band too.
❤
My Zelda...
It is amazing to myself that Harry Belafonte STIILL LIVES and, is active!
Bless his heart! I sure hope Mr. Calypso makes it to 150!
As a little boy in the Fifties, I used to listen to his Calypso specialties on
our nifty RCA Victor 45 player entranced but, have yet to make it to Trinidad.
For stamp collectors: Trinidad (and Jamaica!) have terrific philatelic
histories and that in-general.)
Hoje escutando a música Matilde, Matilde, quando acabo de ouvir sobre a morte de Harry Belafonte.
wating....
My name matilda im fro. Venexuela 😂😂
The king of balleruga!!!
I hope he paid royalties
Can anyone tell me what he says right in the beginning?
Can someone explain why the video is so crisp when early '50s that is saved is usually Kinescope?
the only thing I can think of is they took the kinnescope and then remastered it digitally (If that's possible)
Likely it was a matter of technical excellence vs. sloppy.
DuMont Kines were sadly not very good, whereas the
one we see here was from one of the networks of that
time, that was definitely the better of the two.
(Have never before heard of a Lemurian chick, Venusian
yes but that? Hmm.)
This was must see TV for black Americans in 1953. That is, for those blacks who had televisions. There was very little representation of blacks in the movies and on TV. So if Ed Sullivan had a black performer (which he regularly did), blacks were eagerly waiting for the show to come on.
Ja ja! Se llevó los reales y se fue para Venezuela!
My daughters name is Matilda
👏👏👏👏♥️♥️💐💐💐🇻🇪🇬🇷🧿

Zeker weten
Please listen to the original King Radio version. In my opinion better than this.
Commie AH
why anyone would think this great music is head scratching.....belafonte is the perfect example of how the people have always responded to mediocrity....and why with such low levels of intelligence we find the country bereft with problems....while corrupt politicians serve their entire lifetimes never having to worry about a voting public to dim to insist on reform...
omaggio al Re del Calypso.
