  • The Cubs' 1998 home opener was unique in that it was the first since Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Caray passed away Feb. 18 that year. His widow, Dutchie, led the seventh-inning stretch with new TV play-by-play man Chip Caray, Harry's grandson, in the booth. Cubs starter Steve Trachsel had a hard time finishing the inning. He later admitted to being nervous as the crowd stood in anticipation of the third out of the Expos' half. It was a memorable rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." The Cubs won 6-2 en route to sweeping the four-game series. Here's the box score from Baseball Reference: bit.ly/1F3b96t

When I heard 'Amazing Grace', seeing the Caray's hug, the balloons, the chants, I couldn't stop crying.

After all these years, still in tears. How Harry would have loved this season. Let's win it for him and Jack and Ronnie and Ernie.

After this game at a bar right outside the stadium my parents met! It’s amazing to see clips of the game that brought them together :)

I got goosebumps watching the start of this. What a great year for the Cubs! Too bad Harry wasn't around to call it. He would've loved that particular season of 1998.

Its been so many years and I still miss Harry. He was a heckuva announcer. Loved the Cubs but was honest about them.

Lifelong Braves fan from the south but growing up I came home from school every afternoon and watched Harry and the Cubs on WGN. Great memories.

Almost 23 years later and I'm getting choked up watching this. That man's voice was the sound of my childhood. We miss you Harry!

I truly believe he watched the 2016 season from heaven, with an ice cold Old Style in his hand.

It was simply beautiful listening to Mrs. Carey sing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame”. Then to hear “Amazing Grace”, I know that I sure was crying, too. My gosh, it’s been 21 years ago. It seems like yesterday. Bless you, Harry. May he forever Rest In Peace.
