    Today I'm going to be trying out Italy's privately operated high-speed train service, Italo!

    There's nothing wrong with shops and eateries in stations as they provide people going on journeys with the ability to pick something up for the (road? Track?) and commuters returning home to do the daily grocery shopping conveniently without having it be a separate activity in a busy day (and worse, using a car to go shopping, potentially). Where it does become problematic is when a station becomes a soulless corporate shopping mall first and the trains are a sort of awkward afterthought.

      = St Pancras, where access to the Midland platforms was considered secondary to more shops, leading to regular rushes up the very, very limited entry points when platforms are announced late! Really bad design (notwithstanding reviews of the station refurb as supposedly amazing -- not as a train station it's not...)

    Would love to see a video on the Italo pendolino. Please do so. When you boarded the train at Torino with only 3 minutes to spare , made me chuckle. This seems to be a common occurrence travelling by train in Italy. There's always a mad dash to board the train before it departs. When in Milano CLE a few years ago I boarded a train to Parma with literally seconds to spare after the platform number was displayed minutes before the train was due to depart ! Great video as always. More Italian trains please.

    I always find Italo to be far superior to Trenitalia: great value for money, better seats, better on-board service (e.g. the first class welcome drink is served multiple times throughout the journey even on short/medium-haul routes like Milan-Venice, whereas on the Frecce you get served once, even on a 1000km trip). And while up until recently Italo had very few trains compared to Trenitalia, nowadays the two operate at similar frequencies on the main routes, which is great

    • @leonardheiden
      @leonardheiden Před 2 lety +10

      @Obi Wan Kenobi ~ Giovanni Valtournanche Rebibbia I've never seen Italo being that expensive compared to Trenitalia😅 I usually travel between Milan and Conegliano or Venice, and Italo is always way cheaper, even as little as 12€ for a 300km trip in first class booked only 7 days in advance, whereas the Frecciarossa would rarely cost less than 25€ even with promo codes

    • @benjaminnelles7810
      @benjaminnelles7810 Před rokem +11

      I always find the comparison between a private operator like italo and a state operator like Trenitalia a bit unfair. Italo can pick the most profitable lines to offer a service where as Trenitalia offers intercity-trains to almost all of Italy. Many routes in rural areas are not really profitable but are of course very important for local communities there and the transport-network in general. Therefore Trenitalia also has to fund some of these routes with excess money from the profitable routes. Generally speaking I think privatisation is not a good thing on network-level.

      i disagree, i find frecciarossa more enjoyable, italo even completely lacks the executive class, wich miself never took but its there and its the most premium experience you can have in a train in europe (and so probably in the world). Not to mention that italo have just a few lines, while frecciarossa its nationwide.

    AC sockets are NOT compatible with the european type plug, they are italian type only (very bad decision). You'll need an adaptor or you can WILDLY FORCE the european plug inside resulting in damages to the sockets as your video clearly shows.

    • @strongcarlo1
      @strongcarlo1 Před 2 lety +1

      Actually there are four external holes on each socket. The inner hole with smyller diameter is meant to be used for italian style plugs whereas the external one of bigger diameter is for european plugs. Nontheless the sockets seem to be very worn out, which could be a consequence of insufficient tolerances.

    • @tm8473
      @tm8473 Před 2 lety +4

      @@strongcarlo1 Nope. The socket installed in the trains are a "combo" between two italian standards. The smaller, known as P11, is suitable for current under 10A, the larger (P17) for current under 16A. The combo is called "P17/11".
      The P11 holes (the inner two) are worn because somebody forced in a Schuko plug (frequently referred as EU plug because is widely adopted across Europe).
      The Schuko plug has the same distance between contacts as the P11 but a greater diameter (5mm instead of 4mm).

      Late to the party, but, I came to the comments to look for this question ... then it dawned on me ... I wonder if because most established lines running push-pull consists would already have maintenance facilities built around that model and conversion to maintaining multiple units would be too costly or too interuptive to convert. But, the Italo AGV is a beautiful machine to observe.

    No Cafe, No Way
    Before I had to cancel my Germany/Italy trip in 2019 I debated between Trenitalia and Italo AGV from Milan to Rome but when I learned AGV only provided vending machines for food and drink it was an easy choice. The cafe or bistro car is the heart and soul of any train where passengers mix and mingle and learn new things. Give me cafe or give me death!!!

    Quite a nice train. A shame about the non-working hand drier in the toilet (the water flow wasn't the greatest I've seen on a train). I wasn't overly impressed with the luggage store areas - either in the stacks or overhead racks. Great value for money, though.

      If you check Avlo Renfe and Ouigo España you'll see that the cheapest tickets are around 20-30 euros. And you don't need to be very young. The trains run at 300 km/h. You can travel from Central London to Stansted for 20 pounds.
      Trenitalia also launches services in Spain, Iryo. It got used to the fact that in Italy it has a competitor, Italo.
