  • We start a Balloon Busting mission playthrough with Aces of Valor, the solitaire (solo) wargame (historical game board game) where you manage a squadron of World War 1 planes in a campaign missions over the Western Front. Designed by Erik von Rossing and published by Legion Wargames.
    Known Errors:
    1 - When rolling for Anti-Aircraft in sectors, you're supposed to roll once for the level of AA attack, then that number of dice for each plane in your formation. In this video, when executing AA in a sector, I mistakenly rolled for the AT level for each plane individually.

    Great example of play, I can't wait to see the dogfight.
    I had a friend who got to ride in a WWI plane at an airshow. He said he was terrified that the plane would fall apart, it was so flimsy. He couldn't believe they actually fought in them.

    • @ZillaBlitz

      Yeah, I can't imagine what it must have been like to fly one of these. Heck the wings used to fall off. :)

      Yeah, I used to make planes out of balsa-wood struts covered in tissue paper and dope--not THAT far off the wood and canvas of the real deal. ;-)

      They went for lightness and strength, with lightness being the priority. Remember that materials science, and for that matter internal combustion engines, were in their infancy! Once engines became more powerful, they could make them heavier and therefore stronger. Some of the gliders I have flown have been stick-and-doped-fabric ones; the more modern steel tubing and fabric, then solid fibreglass, become heavier and yet more aerodynamically efficient (less draggy), which makes up for the added weight - less drag being equivalent to more power if you like.

    So far I really like this game. Plays really quick once you get the rules down, it has enough decisions as you manage your roster to be interesting but without getting bogged down trying to be a super realistic air combat game. And it should have a lot of replay ability since every campaign is going to be different.

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Před rokem +1

      Yes, once you get confident in the sequence of play, things go quickly between the bouts of combat, for sure. And the narrative elements are really strong. :)

    Totally agree with starting with Tier 2. This allows you to potentially face Tier 1 and Tier 3 enemies

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Před rokem

      I like the idea of the challenge behind Tier 1 as well, especially if you are going with the long campaign where you can be patient and pick your fights. I found the game can beat you up on individual missions, but that the campaign difficulty expects that sort of issue, and feels quite gentle.

    I'm doing my first mission so far. A bombing HQ mission. I successfully bombed it but have one fighter KIA, one fighter returned early because he was damaged, and one who's damaged and will be returning on the next round (I had to stop and come back to it). Enjoying the narrative so far! Great video.

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Před rokem +1

      Nice! One thing that I've noticed is that the game can be brutal on individual missions, but the campaign system is much gentler, and you can absorb lots of bad missions and lost pilots and still have a successful campaign. So don't let the losses deter you. Well, kind of. It stinks when you lose your better pilots. 💥🛩

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Před rokem +1

      Thanks, Chris! ~ I have found that some missions are harder to score well on than other missions, and even if you get beat up on a few missions don't get discouraged. I think the game can slam you down on a mission level, but overall the campaign is much gentler than the individual missions, if that makes sense.

  • @Stumptonian1
    @Stumptonian1 Před rokem +1

    Good first playthrough. My PC died in the middle of watching yesterday so I am back today on iPhone. I just finished a 16 mission campaign as Tier 1 French. Brutal! Lost 11 planes but managed a Minor Victory. Looking forward to your continuation.

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Před rokem

      Sorry about the demise of your PC!
      But wow, that sounds like a great campaign you had! That actually falls in line with one of my observations as well: the game can be brutal but the campaign scoring takes that into account. In my first campaign, I thought I was doing terribly but even after 5 horrible missions, I had a few VP and had only lost 2 pilots killed. The game is both merciless and merciful at the same time. :)

    Rock solid video mate. Great game. For myself, I found after about 3 or 4 missions, everything started going really quick and smooth. Easy playing but gives that great narrative and just enough decisions to make it interesting (similar to The Hunters, Interceptor Ace, etc.)

    • @MiscName
      @MiscName Před rokem +2

      There’s also heaps of potential for variants and mods. I look forward to seeing what people post on BGG in the coming months. Easy to imagine extra depth to some systems - weather, takeoff events or mechanical failures, etc. But having said that, it does play wonderfully straight out of the box.

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Před rokem +1

      Thanks! And yes, it'd be easy to make new squadrons as well, of different nationalities, etc. I think I want to try a campaign where the encounters aren't leveled.
