***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 5 new videos every week! Tuesday through Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we transition from city dwellers to full time homesteaders!

Want to start your own kombucha??? We bought our starter SCOBY here: www.amazon.com/dp/B009ZW8RP4/?ref=exp_livingtraditionshomestead_lv_dp_vv_d
LOL!!!!! Amazon actually sells these things? How funny!!
Thank you for the recipe
I concur on the apple cider & kombucha "oops" vinegar rinse! I have long thick naturally curly hair and super hard water. I didn't believe the detangle claims made about it on another site & had to try it for myself boy was I pleasantly surprised and my hair is so bright & shiny since I've switched. Am still trying shampoo alternatives too.
You can make your own scooby using unflavored raw kombucha from the grocery store, add that to black tea and sugar, date the container and let it sit in the pantry, It will happen I’ve made it.
Sell me one of yours?
Second ferment is super easy without buying juice!! Use a couple pint jars with lids, mushed up a few berries from ur raspberry/blackberry brambles (if u freeze berries let them thaw a bit) add the kombucha to the jars and close the lids tight for 2-3 days... you will have a super carbonated sweet 2nd ferment kombucha drink!! For all the city folk out there reading this... fresh or frozen fruit works great!!
Do you refrigerate it during the second fermentation
lol city folk, yep here in the city I don't know anything.
Amelia Kat when you do the second fermentation leave it outside for a better result and then the 3rd day you can put it in the refrigerator.
Never open before refrigerate because it can make a mess
@@ameliakat9982 - No, you do the second ferment at the same room temperature. HOWEVER, you need to use special heavy duty bottles (like the ones with a spring top that you use for bottling beer). Or you can reuse store bought Kombucha bottles and lids that you buy at the store (like GT’s). The point is you need bottles that won’t burst during the carbonation process! If you let ferment longer than a couple days, then you should “burp” the bottles very carefully every 24 hours after the first couple days. Then you want to refrigerate (as the cold temperature will reduce the Carbon Dioxide pressure before opening). It’s always good to open your bottles over a bowl or sink (in case the CO2 goes crazy).
A lot of people save a scoby or two in a "scoby hotel" (A separate jar with kombucha to cover) in case something bad happens to the "working" scoby. Great video!
Finally! Someone else that likes the first ferment just fine. I love it just as is and also don't want the expense or trouble to second ferment. Thank you for sharing that long fermentation is still usable as a vinegar and what we can do with it, so many people just throw it out 😢.
Yes! I have been adding home grown ginger in my second ferment and it tastes so delicious. If you let it get super fizzy it has a mild ginger beer flavor.
Thank you and may our Almighty GOD continually forgive and bless you and your beautiful family members 🙏🙏🙏
Yay, you were right, my chickens loved the old scoby! Also I ended up with Kombucha vinegar and I used it as a toner and my skin is soooo soft. Also put it on my stubborn toenail fugus and after applying it twice a day for three 3 weeks, the fungus is gone! I can't believe it! thank you.
Wow thank you for sharing that! I've had a really hard time finding the info. on how to use it topically even though I know it's powerful that way. Really appreciate you sharing this
I use Kombucha in the first ferment as they did back in the 1700s. Its good. I do it both ways and bottle it with apple juice. You can fry and eat the Scoby, its tastes like mushroom.
Good to know! Thanks for sharing
Sometimes with the SCOBY if it is tough enough, I will add pepper flakes (Korean brands) some chopped up scallions, a little sugar, grated carrots, and napa cabbage. I have airlock jars so I will do that and put it back in my pantry. Wait a few days to a week and oh man its good stuff.
Wow, that is a VERY fun fact! Thanks for sharing :)
Oh my goodness! I would give this video 100 thumbs up if I could!!! Sarah, you do such an amazing job of teaching. You made this very easy for me to understand and follow. I'm not afraid to try making kombucha now 😀 and thanks to another commenter on this video, I know how to start. Woot!
I like flavoring my kombucha during the second fermentation with sweet tea. I use hibiscus loose leaf along with a spiced tea or ginger root and make sure to add a lot of sugar to the tea. works well for me!
I've been making Komucha for about 30 years. I do it all very similarly to Sarah. I do have a tip, thought. When your water is hot in the sauce pan, brew your tea there and you can add the sugar at the same time. Next, fill your jar about 1/2 to 2/3 full with your cool water, add the hot sweet tea, starter kombucha liquid then skoby. So, what's the difference, where's the tip? you might ask. Well, doing it Sarah's order of operation (with hot water going into jar first) I have cracked several jars. Also, I have found that my kombucha seems to be more clear, doesn't get cloudy.
I have a scoby that I've forgotten about in my cabinet as well... glad to see this video come along
I am watching this 4 years after you posted, but thank you, for your video, as I begin to try this Kombucha tea for the first time. I ordered a scoby kit on Amazon.
Hi, Living Traditions Homestead! I just wanted to mention if I get too many SCOBY from the SCOBY hotel. I will grind them up in my ninja and add some scented body oil like mango, coconut or peppermint/eucalyptus. Then put them in a canning jar and leave by the shower for the hair rinse. It works like a charm! Love you guys and God bless you all for all the videos and all your hard work on your homestead!
The shampoo.....I just ordered a ginger plant that is used for washing your hair, its called Pine Cone Ginger. We are getting away from all chemicals so I decided to grow my own shampoo. We were stationed in Hawaii for 6 years and as a hairdresser, I worked on beautiful long hair. Many times I was given a small bottle container filled with this ginger, to use as shampoo. Just look it up and you will get all the info you need to make your own shampoo using the Pine Cone Ginger plant. Love what you share!!!! Many Blessings!
Great video, I have been drinking about an ounce of kombucha every morning for 6 years. I make it in a half gallon jar now and that way I don't have too much. I do asecond ferment with berries from my garden or in winter I use elderberry juice that I also grow and juice. I started to make it totally with green tea and love the flavor. I also think that it's bringing back the color in my hair.
Omg. That is what I thought about my grey hair. So it is not my immagination.
one ounce? wow I drink a bottle a day 16 oz
By just drinking it or do you also use it as hair rinse?
Safety tip: generally you shouldn't add boiling water to a glass container unless you know it to be made of borosilicate glass (e.g., Pyrex). The glass can unexpectedly shatter due to the thermal shock. You would be better off brewing the tea in the pot, filling the container with the filtered water, then adding the tea to the water.
When I saw that I went into shock for a sec. 😂
I actually mopped my floors with mine. It was an amazing cleaner! Thanks for sharing the great uses!
How do you do the cleaner?
I would love to use my kombucha vinegar for that
OMG yes! I didn't mean to but I was transporting a box of assorted kombucha into the kitchen and didn't place it quite right on the stove to rest a moment. But I tell you what, not one store bought kombucha bottle broke (the lids did) and my kitchen smelled crazy fresh for like a week :D
I've been intimidated about Kombucha but my daughter gave me SCOBY a while ago...and I have a few flavors in mind to try. I hope my SCOBY is still Ok to use as it has been sitting in a dark cabinet for months. Thanks Sarah for making us forgetful SCOBY moms feel secure. I used to use ACV on my hair as a teen, you've reminded me and so I will start doing that again. Thank both you and Kevin for all your videos.
My wife makes Kombucha every couple of months. She likes to look at different videos from time to time about makinig Kombucha. She really liked this Living Traditions Homestead lady, so she wants to learn more about her ideas on all things "Homestead".
Hi, thanks for your video!!! I add mint and rosemary leaves to flavor and for the 2nd fermentation. It is amazing! You should try it.
Thank you for keeping it real! Much appreciated....
Aussome!! LOVE your videos. I am working 6 days a week to finish out a tiny cabin i am moving into in the Ozarks. Your sharing of knowledge is a blessing!
When doing the 2nd fermentation…. You need to use special heavy duty bottles (like the ones with a spring top that you use for bottling beer). Or you can reuse store bought Kombucha bottles and lids that you buy at the store (like GT’s). The point is you need bottles that won’t burst during the carbonation process! I've been using vinegar as fabric softener in the laundry, but never thought of using it on hair... yet, it makes so much sense when I think about it now!
Wow!! I am so glad I found your video! I as well have a few month old batch of kombucha 😂
I had no idea I could use it on my hair!
My family prefers plain kombucha. I rarely ever do a second ferment! I frequently forget my kombucha and let it over ferment 🤦♀️ Very informative video 👏. I don’t know if you brew water kefir, but my kids LOVE it.
Thank you so much for sharring this video. I love all your videos, but this one in particular, I was like a little kid in front of a awesome teacher. I lear so much from your videos; and when the video ends, I literally don't want the video to end 😊
Thank you once again.
God bless you🤗
Awesome to hear your take on it
I love washing my hair with kombucha vinegar, my curls love it! I just make sure it is all the way fermented and no sugar left at all. Definitely worth trying!
Hi how long to fermentation till no sugar left? Thanks
I guess that would depend on the brewing conditions, but I typically wait 6 months to be safe
12:55 You should get some PH testing strips and test its PH. Mine is normally a PH of 2-3. Same as normal vinegar.
So glad I found this video! It's what I've been needing! I, too, have been a bad kombucha mama lol
I used the vinegar to clean my oven. It made my crusty oven sparkle ❇️. I also added baking soda and Dawn dish soap 🧼.
Amazing video, thanks Sarah! God bless!
Learning new things from you guys a lot. Thanks! Merry Christmas 🎄.
Such an informative video!!!!! Glad you came up in my feed!!!!! Thank you so much!
Awesome information. Thank you!!!
Looking forward to giving all of these ideas a try
You forgot to look for vinegar eels anytime you forget your kombucha you need to check with a flashlight for small swimming things that follow the light and yes it is a thing.
Fascinating...I’d never heard of this!
Great video. Thank you for sharing.
It also contains a multi b-vitamin complex which is brain food, especially the ones protected from sunlight.
Love this information thank you for all the tips. Great job.
I've been making it the same as you for almost 5 years (one ferment), drinking on a daily basis. A couple years ago, I left it for about 5 months and went through the same thing. However, I didn't know what to do with the "bad" liquid-vinegar, so I ended up throwing it out and starting over. Glad to know there are alternatives!
Perhaps you can stretch your kombucha vinegar, when washing your hair, if you put it in a squirt bottle, apply it to the scalp, massage it into your scalp, and using your hands or your comb/brush to distribute the kombucha vinegar to the rest of the hair...my little suggestion.
Very good thank you for all get tips
Thanks for adding another bit of info into my "Jeopardy brain" (that is the place in your head where you will retrieve valuable bits of info in case you are ever a contestant on Jeopardy. :) and of course it is useful information for use on a daily basis. Thumbs up Sarah!
.
This is so helpful. Thanks for sharing. 💕
You’ve created a kombucha vinegar!!! 🙂🥭🥬🧄🙃🕊
great presentation. thanks
Thank you for sharing your oopsie Kombucha. Good information on uses for the vinegar. Love watching your site.
Love your videos. God Bless you and your family.
good day to you Kevin and Sarah !! thanks for sharing another awesome update and adventures on & off the homestead 👨🌾🎥👍✝
I really appreciate the detail in ur explanation of how things work.
I am making my first ferment of kombucha!! My wonderful neighbor gave me a scoby! It's the first day of fermentation!...I am so very excited! thank you!
Thank you for making this video . . . you are not alone, I am a F1 ferment drinker too. I have been drinking Kombucha for 35 years and this second fermentation has never been a thing, for everyone I know.
Great ideas. Thanks
I’ve had mine go to vintage a couple of times! I’ll try the conditioner and the toner.
I also only ferment mine once. I sometimes i puree fruit or make my own juice from berries or fruit. Then i put it in the fridge till I drink ir. I make vinegar from it for salad dressing, add to water for me or the animal's water. I usually cut up or puree rhe scoby. to eat it in my drinks. I've seen a soap recipe with the scoby. Have a nice holiday season.
Everything about this video was so helpful. I didn't realize there were so many different uses for kombucha!
I plan on trying this. I really like your videos because you seem to do things a lot like we did growing up. I'm not a homesteader but trying to find a little patch of country and searching for better or easier ways along with new possibilities. I tried to garden here but in town instead of worrying about keeping the deer out, it's people. My plan is to start with chickens after garden is going. Later on maybe moving into the possibly rsising goats and rabbits. Not sure I'll go past that. Of course all my choices will mainly depend upon the property I get. Could use some prayers that God would put the perfect piece of property in my hands. Thanks!
Thank you for your experiences, knowledge , skills and explaination
Hi Sara . I saw your video last night. Unknowingly you help me with a problem I have with my Havanese dog. I keep his hair long and even thoughtI brush him frequently his long hair gets matted. I heard you use the vinegar as a hair rinse for your daughters and that helps with de tangling. I used it with him and it worked great. Thanks a bunch. I will share that with his groomer.
super helpful. i've been doing kombucha for years but am always learning more. thank you!
Thank you for the great info!! I've been making kombucha for several years but never new about kombucha vinegar and it's uses. I'm so excited to have an alternative to throwing it out. Thank you!!
I'm so glad to see this video. I've been telling myself for a week to look at my Kombucha jug. Its been growing for 2 months and I wasn't sure what to do about it. Thank you so much for the info !!!!!😃😃
I've found that a kombucha scoby is a very forgiving thing :) Had a batch in the back of the pantry that had been neglected for at least a year (probably more) and decided to see if I could get it going again. It's now humming happily along again, just as if nothing had happened. :) I do a second ferment and like to use fruit to flavor it - we had a bumper crop of plums this year and I'm still using it in the kombucha. Ginger makes a delicious flavoring too and has benefits of its own. Must also admit I buy blueberry syrup from the store and use a couple of spoonfuls of that in some bottles. Yummy! Unfortunately I have no chickens (hubby is not keen on the idea), so when I have a spent scoby it goes into the compost.
Oh good, coz I have a scoby of 6 months! So will ressurrect it today!
Thanks for this! It was a big help. FYI: no need for shampoo; that's a hoax. Unless you use a lot of product in your hair that you need to clean out, water does the job. I haven't used shampoo in more than a decade, and my hair is soft, odor-free, and shiny.
Sarahhhhhhhh,,,,,,, Thank You Thank You. Great advice for my beautiful 4 month Kombucha, I've been busy canning and smoking meat and dehydrating,, I love this video! From Rives Junction, Michigan,
Thank you for sharing, I have a patch been sitting for few months didn't know what to do to it❤❤❤❤
Great video! We only first ferment. Easy peasy and it’s so good!
You have a wealth of information to share with us, and you are an excellent teacher. I appreciate all your videos. Thanks for all you do.
I would never have thought. Great video
Thanks for an insightful video
Great uses!
awesome, now I will try this to salvage a whole combucha hotel we'll see what happens, thanks for sharing
Great video. I have been a slacker. I have a scoby hotel so I'd better make some soon. Thanks for the refresher.
Great video, thank you. I am tempted to do kombucha again after seeing this.
We are having Summer now and it's a good season for cold fizzy, healthful drinks.
Love it. God bless! 🙏❤️🤗
Thank you, making my first batch this weekend. ; )
Great video! I prefer a one time ferment also. Thanks for the tips!
This was Excellent!! I too haven't bothered with 2nd fermentation. I love the idea of a face toner as well as hair rinse (currently using acv). Really Loving your videos !! Thank you !
My chickens absolutely love old Scobys!
Thanks for sharing I love 💕 your videos
Thanks for the great info and tips on making my own kombucha I hope to try it myself and see how I do, thanks and have a great and blessed day :-)
Thank you, you have saved my old scoby! x
you can use the K. vinegar for flavoring foods or salads. and I take the old Scoby's and a little water in my vitamin and put around my tomato plants they thrive on it. Blessings Herby
I like the first ferment of kombucha too. Blessing's Herby
I REALLY needed to see this video.
Awesome. I have done lots of Kombucha but never used in my hair or face. Thanks for that and will try it.
Love my kombucha as do my grandchildren! I do not second ferment either. Great suggestions on using kombucha vinegar, thank you.
I messed up and made vinegar too. so I took it and give it 2 teaspoons to a gallon on water for my chickens
Nice! I was just looking to start one off the bottle we just finished
Thank you! You've given me a lot more ideas on how to use my kombucha juice and how to further care for and use our scoby! Very good video; thank you.
Great video thanks so much
Awesome thanks !!!!
I did that once last year...it was for sure vinegar...I used mine in salad dressing as well but didn't know about the hair rinse. Thanks for sharing!
Great video, I did not know about the benefits to hair. Good to know.
This was so helpful. Reusing kumbucha vinegar
I've always wanted to try making kamboucha. I like that you can salvage the vinegar too. Great idea for use as a hair rinse or facial cleanser. Thank you for sharing this.
Thanks Sarah! I let mine go and was worried it would make me sick so I put it in the compost. Good to know I could of STILL used it!!! I'll make another attempt. As always, thanks for the great videos!!
Thank you thank you you have made it so much easir
