Kombucha is a fermented beverage of black tea and sugar. After fermentation, kombucha becomes carbonated and contains vinegar, B vitamins, enzymes, probiotics and a high concentration of acid.
In this episode of Ancient Medicine Today, I’ll be answering the question, “Is kombucha actually healthy?” I’ll cover in full detail exactly what kombucha is, share the nutrition facts, discuss the health benefits and decipher who should and should not be drinking this fermented drink.

Drank some today just to do it...I actually feel better...I mean I ate..I cooked...maybe I'll drink more. I suffer with depression. I go with the green meds with that...thinking about juicing.
Nonsense. There are no clinical trials suggesting significant health benefits

Same here
This is my first one, I bought one bottle from the grocery store on the frozen section and I just tried half a cup. It has zero sugar and that what I am look for in a drink. I have a sensitive stomach so I would see in the next few minutes how by stomach reacts to it.

My brother owns a kombucha company, but no conflict of interest here or anything. Just gonna run through all these reasons why kombucha is amazing though
Exactly what I thought 🤣
😂😂😂
Lalit Sharma
I don’t mind his brother owns a kombucha company. He never mentioned the name even. It’s a very healthy drink and I am not surprised with his lifestyle that he and his family probably were drinking it way before the huge boost of popularity it has received lately.
I legit paused the video to see the comments after he mentioned that...HAHAHA!
He didn't mention the company name, probably not difficult to find if you try. But he did say who should not be using, anyone with a leaky gut or candida problems. Not quite sure what else he should have said? Did you need him to dwell on the side effects more?
I just started brewing my own home Kombucha a month ago and it’s amazing! 😊
Started drinking kombucha daily two months ago. This, with a vegetarian diet, has really helped my gut health. Love it! At first I was put off by it's taste, but now I actually enjoy it.
as someone who has colitis, I have to disagree with you saying it's a harm. Fermented foods is how I keep from having flare ups. but everyone's different
I am in the same boat as you. I haven't had a single flare up in years.

Everyone is so different, I agree. And the quantity matters.
Not all fermented foods are made equal
@@withnail-and-i this two year old late comment speaks the truth. A lot of those fermented foods they buy are laced with refined products up the arse!
Well i have to disagree. I have IBS and SIBO. Kombucha is one of the few things makes my intestines move, for me serves as anti inflammation agent even though i have IBS. Balances the bacteria in my small and big intestines . I use this along side with Sauerkraut and works miracles !!!

I recently started making my own kombucha at home, so thank you for this video! Now I know it’s a great option to completely replace sodas from my diet. Cheers!
I was in pain with sciatica. The pain was very bad . It went from my waist through my foot. It also made half of my foot numb. I tried to do yoga but it was very difficult with the pain. So then I started to brew my own kombucha and drank regularly. Then after 2 weeks I barely felt any pain and my foot stop being numb. The only thing I did differently in my diet was drinking kombucha. So I just post it here in case anybody have the same problem and just want to give it a try. P.S. I don’t believe in modern medicine and always seek for natural cure.
I think I noticed the same thing with my sciatica
Well dam , I'm drinking one right now lol . Been hurting for 20 plus years lol. I am gonna try that . I noticed if my bowels aren't right , I Hurt to my toes . Glad it worked for you . Hope it works for me haha .
I also am sleeping in a faraday cage around my bed. WHAT A MIRACLE that was for me!!! Smart meters and cell tower radiation is KILLING us too. Chiropractored for over 20 years with lower back pain, neck pain and most recently a dehabilitating knee issue that I couldn't walk without crutches. Moved to my home away from cell towers. My health conditions ALL CLEARED UP. There was NO SMART METER on my home. Recently I was FORCED to have one put on my home or they would disconnect. The very next day....EXTREME migraine, knee pain (felt like hot cattle prod hitting my knee) lower back pain returned. I then put a smart meter cover around my electric meter. That didn't do the trick. Then I saw on-line...faraday cages around bed on you tube. Had one made for about $250.00. 8x8x6 feet tall. THE NEXT MORNING I felt like I was 25 again!!! I am 64.
You don’t believe in modern medicine that’s why you went through the suffering. Next time listen to your doctor and listen to me everyone don’t listen to a stranger at CZcams. It Might make it worst go see your doctor instead
The flavour is nice as well! Really interesting and like a weird beer-tea-vinegar hybrid.

Yes!!! I couldn’t describe the flavor until now
I wish I could enjoy the taste but for me it’s just not pleasant kinda like beer tea and vinegar
It was how I acquired the taste for beer 5 years ago; now I'm in love with all craft beer.
I drink kombucha while I'm on my period, my periods used to be very severe, heavy, just terrible. After changing my whole diet, and also drinking kombucha plus more fermented foods I do notice a difference. It also helps me when I have a stomachache for some reason, and it also helps me with constipation.
i had like a stomach flu and drink kombucha and boom it made me feel so much better

Sheldon Cooper what’s ur recioe
Recipe
How do u make it?
@@yoana3351 go buy kombucha from the store, origional, non flavored ( I had to use a ginger one but it still works!)
Boil 4 cups of water on the stove and add 4-6 black tea bags ( I used 4 black tea and 2 green tea).
Let it steep for 10 min.
Dissolve 1 cup or organic cane sugar.
Let the mixture cool no lower than 65 degrees to avoid mold in scoby.
Then add in 1/2 of the kombucha you bought into the mixture.
Cover the top of your jar with an old T-shirt (I cut fabric from the bottom of one) so that the mixture can breathe and flies dont invade it.
Put it in a dark room or pantry and leave it undisturbed for 14 days.... yes 14 days.
If you mess with it to much you will disturb the scoby life cycle.
At the end of 14 days you will have a beautiful scoby.
Taste the mixture to make sure it's not too sweet, you want it sour but not too sour either.
Then repeat the tea brewing steps above minus the store bought kombucha.
Transfer 2 cups of your first brew + your scoby into the cooled tea and sugar mixture, cover again and let it sit for 7 more days and you'll have even more kombuch.
It ferments more and more with every brew cycle and will be much more carbonated than the first!
Thank you! Every other recipe seemed so complicated! Your explanation is great!
I find kombucha to be very helpful for my IBS, so to each their own.

I find kombucha so helpful and impactful because I really dislike the taste of yogurt so it's hard for me to get probiotics without it. Thank you for the very informative video.
Love your videos and articles, thank you Dr. Axe. I rely on your resources continually. What i have learned has already improved my life. Thank you! One side question i, do you have any information (or a good resource), on Second fermenting Kombuca to taylor it to specific areas. such as Ginger and or lemmon to help combat psoriasis ETC
Mmm.. I don't know. I think a lot of it depends on how it's made. For example, if it's bottled too early (not left to ferment long enough), it'll have a higher sugar content.. or if you use black tea instead of green you'll get more caffeine. Each batch varies widely depending on the ingredients you use and how long it's left to ferment. I think that's why a lot of people get confused about it's benefits.
I personally believe that everyone can drink Kombucha if brewed the right way for that person. For example, you're not gonna give an alcoholic Kombucha that has been left to ferment too long. It can be a gateway back into alcoholism.
Just my two cents. I make my own at home. It's delicious. :)
Luv ya brother!
Keep the videos coming.
Aixa V my first experience with kombucha was in my early twenties and that was 30 something years ago and a woman had made it with the spores from her great-grandmother's recipe it had never touched metal only glass which was one of the things about kombucha was no metal. no other sweeteners then regular sugar and black tea and only black tea. She was almost a hundred I used to clean house for her because she had a mansion and couldn't keep up with it and Great Danes. her kombucha was amazing but she took extra time and making sure it didn't touch metal and all that. And she also let it sit for a very long time before she touched it or moved it. I absolutely agree on the sugar content hers had no sweetness that was a sugar sweetness it had a pleasant taste but not sweet and that was due to the time, but if you talk to people who made kombucha in the early days it's just an absolute send to use anything other than black tea! That's is what kombucha is.

I'd have to disagree with this video. I started recently drinking kombucha and I have ibs. Recently my ibs was triggered by stress and anxiety which is why I bought some to try and it helped my symptoms go away completely. I've tried many different medications for ibs symptoms and none of them worked. The only thing that came close was taking probiotics and taking cbd. But, they didn't stop my stomach cramps and intense pain completely. Only the kombucha did, it also helped me to feel amazing like energized yet also calm, focused, and happier. I'd definitely recommend it to someone with ibs to at least try a small amount and see if it helps. I know some people with ibs do have worsened symptoms but sometimes like in my case it helped. Also, the low fodmap diet is a live saver and helped reduce my ibs symptoms almost completely. Just a quick tip to anyone who may be reading this wanting to try kombucha, don't drink the whole bottle if it's 16 oz. If you stick to the serving size which is normally 8 oz then you should be okay and not have negative symptoms. If you drink more than 8 oz in a day some people report getting sick. I know a lot of people usually go by the mentality that if it's so good I must drink more, but that's not the best bet at least with kombucha. To much of a good thing can be toxic. Also, when I was disagnosed with ibs years ago my doctor recommended that I try probiotics, probiotic yogurt, and even kombucha (which I hated the first time I sipped it and only recently gave it a try again) so I don't understand why he thinks that could be a problem.
Would you recommend or does someone have any experience drinking this who has lupus? If so, what's your feed back?

Interesting article- thanks
I was 49 years old when I moved to an area that had a grocery store that served non alcoholic Komucha. I had not had a yeast infection since my early 20’s. After consuming it for a couple of weeks- just a little everyday, I developed a systemic yeast infection (my gut hurt, had vaginal yeast and felt like I had knives in my throat). I became very ill. I felt horrible, couldn’t eat anything, was dizzy, had memory issues( couldn’t remember my best friend’s last name), calcifications that were/ are visible etc... I am much better now- gut feels better, however my thyroid was affected. Working on that now! Take many supplements everyday, no gluten or grains, no sugar and I’m on my way back to health!
Does this also apply for coconut water kefir (with no sugar added into fermentation). I have major gut issues and dont want to make anything worse
Worse by trying kombucha? I like water kefir and am unsure if I want to try kombucha.
I deal with IBS my doctor told me i need more Probiotics I also deal with underactive thyroid, and fibromylga I think this will help
I had it for IBS and to be honest helped me so much! I now can go out and not have to worry about accidents (I was that bad)! And now when I feel a bit of a flare up I have it and go find. However like anything like he said start slow (witch I did) and see how it works for u
I like how when I watch your videos, I don’t have to do anymore research, thanks :)
Darn it! Guess I shouldn’t start making this again. I have fibromyalgia and a lot of people say candida might be the cause. This bums me out because I loved making this stuff. It’s very satisfying to make your own “something” healthy for you and your loved one.

Drinking Kombucha is satisfying enough for me that it keeps me from drinking beer and other intoxicating alcoholic beverages. It is bad advise to tell people to avoid Kombucha if they are alcoholics, as Kombucha is a healthy alternative that can help to keep a person away from the bar, as it has for me.
I’m enjoying listening to Dr. Axe.
Awesome knowledge
It cured my acid reflux and lactose intolerance!!!
Are you saying bc of the kombucha? I'm also lactose intolerant and would love if that was something that could be cures or at least not so severe.
i have acid reflux with gerd, but im worried the alcohol content in this would worsen my condition.
@@annettethomas905 it helped mine. I was so happy to find a natural alternative.
I started also drinking Kombucha for acid reflux, just started 3 days ago and im not having as much acid come up. And I have LPR all day long so this is a blessing.
I've been experimenting with making it and drinking it for my severe acid reflux, and it's definitely helping! A bacterium called Helicobacter pylori is implicated in a majority of cases things like acid reflux and stomach ulcers, so probiotics should hopefully help improve it
Dr. Axe: you're brother has a Komucha company... can you list the company's name if it's still in business? thanks
I have ulcerative colitis and I had the worst addiction to Coca Cola and I used kombucha to replace my soda addiction and I have not had much problems with kombucha in fact it has helped me eliminate my soda addiction and especially drinking kombucha with ginger has helped calm and sooth my flare ups when I was actively flaring. But also I need to mention that I am currently on entyvio which has helped significantly improve and reduce my flare ups and has helped bring me into remission. Combine kombucha with eating an anti inflammatory diet and my ulcerative colitis has been well controlled.
Thanks. I didn't know what it was! My daughter and grandaughter drink it and I didn't know why. I think I'm going to buy some.
I had an old root canal that became infected. I can only assume the Kombucha killed the infection?? I didn’t begin drinking this with that in mind, I happened to notice a few months after I began drinking Kombucha, my tooth was no longer sore!
