With the upcoming Justice League 2017 movie, the world is wondering when and how Superman returns. After all, what names come to mind when you think of the Justice League? Superman. Ever since Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, the DCEU Henry Cavill Superman has proven a controversial take on the classic DC Comics comic book characters. But on top of his polarizing morality in the DC Universe, there have been plenty of other live action Superman movies and Superman TV shows giving up different takes on the beloved Superhero. And the Superman costume has evolved along with the audience’s changing tastes. These Superman costumes are more than just Superman cosplay, it takes more than a Superman cape and red boots to become the Man of Steel. So, on this episode of Yellow Spandex, we’re taking a look at the evolution of Superman and his costume in live action. The ultimate superhero has a classic Superman costume, but it’s had many interpretations over the years when it comes to the Superman movie costume and Superman TV costume. From the early days of Kirk Alyn Superman and George Reeves Superman, to Christopher Reeves’ iconic Superman 1973 in Superman: The Motion Picture and beyond, the most iconic superhero movie costume in history has a long and interesting history of making it to the big screen.
No look at the Superman costume history would be complete without talking about the Superman Day 1940 at the 1939 World’s Fair. There, an actor named Ray Middleton became the first to wear a real life superhero costume. From there, the Superman serial of 1948 introduced us to Kirk Alyn Superman, with another great black and white Superman costume. Later, the George Reeves Superman tv show, The Adventures of Superman, cemented the character as a mainstay outside of comics, and after two seasons we got to see the first Superman costume in living color. Afterwards, Superman disappeared for awhile until the legendary Richard Donner Superman movie in 1973. Christopher Reeves Superman Costume was a picture perfect recreation of the classic superhero costume, and the Superman costume explained why this movie and this Superman actor became so linked with the character. Later Superman costumes would have a hard time holding a candle to the classic Christopher Reeve Superman suit, but not for lack of trying. The aborted Nicholas Cage Superman Lives movie means we’ll never get to see a Tim Burton Superman movie, but we still got plenty of footage and images of the Nicholas Cage Superman costume. Then and now, Superman has always been an icon of superhero fashion, but the ‘90s proved too rough even for the Man of Steel. As for Smallville, Superman costume were sort of against the point of the show, so we didn’t see it until the last episode. Superman Returns gave us a decent Brandon Routh Superman, but the ugly brown Superman costume failed to impress me. With Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and the DCEU, Zack Snyder offered an alien-looking Superman costume, explained by his Kryptonian heritage. Now, even the Supergirl Superman has a brand new Superman costume. When it comes to the history of Superman costumes, we don’t yet know what the future holds, but it’s safe to say he won’t be away from our screens for long.

I wish y’all still did these. Tons of replay value
Totally agree with this. Not many people know about Ray Middleton's outing as Superman, so I'm glad that's mentioned. It was a bit of a mystery who portrayed the 1940 Superman since Middleton was also listed as a celebrity judge, but his family maintains that it was him.
It's also hilarious how the Superman emblem was on the soles of his boots in Superman Returns. Would have never noticed that.
I honestly hated the overuse of the S shield in Superman Returns. Just take it off the boots and belt already! You know where another S needs to be? The cape, dude!
Damm, I was just now binging Yellow Spandex after seeing it in the trending tab, perfect timing is perfect.
The MOS suit is way better than BVS suit. I know there are only minor changes, but those changes with his new bigger and bulkier body didn't do it for me.
tyren nolen I honestly didn't even notice the changes. 😄
The Once and Future Nerd LoL I'm glad to help, awesome video by the way
I honestly feel the BvS suit is an improvement on the MoS suit. The MoS suit is too dark, only has the yellow oval belt buckle as an advantage, and is a normal Kryptonian bodysuit. The BvS suit has better coloring, a better belt, better wrist bands, and the symbol is not too big and not too small either
@@thenoirknight5729 The MOS suit is far superior to the BVS one...The red pops better with the muted blue and felt more organic..
The square belt buckle clashed with the organic feel ..And just below that bad square buckle is that god awful "pee Flap" ..Its so blatant and a distraction .
@@dignerds I disagree. I actually like the square buckle, for two reasons. #1 being that the square buckle is a reference to Dean Cain's Superman suit in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and #2 being that while there are no straight lines on Krypton, there are on Earth. Pee flap?
I'm old enough to have grown up on George Reeves as Supes, but I love Chris Reeve as much, and the costume Chris wore comes the the closest to the comic books. By that, I mean the way artist Curt Swan drew him in the 1960s, especially the insignia on his chest. If they had reproduced that faithfully on the Chris Reeve suit, that would have been perfect.
Gonna have to disagree with the new modern era Superman, I think this is the best costume yet
Henry Cavil he fits Superman alot
Which of Cavill's suits is your favorite?
The henry cavil costume is the best to me
DevilPoroNnj needs better color balance. Maybe a red belt...
Same here
@@christiancrusader9374 NO! No red belt! I hate the red belt! It sucks and always will. Every time it does! I'm so glad Snyder went with a yellow belt. If they do add red, it should be a rip from The New 52 Earth-2 Superman
Edit: Oh hey
@@thenoirknight5729 I'm fine with a gold belt, I just don't like the lack of color balance on the suit.
Christopher Reeve IS Superman ....period
"Stick with the classics. " A quote that destroys the stories ability to be retold and evolve. Its not about giving you the same thing, its about someone else telling their version. Their vision. Appreciate the classics. Don't be bound to them.
Couldn't have said it better myself
I had the exact same thought. I love the classics, but change is necessary. Imagine if we still had the Bill Finger Batman.
manonthesun Visuals are a very important part of telling a story in films. Superman's costume is likely the most important visual in a superman movie.
KeyFrame11Media So true.
No, the costume was never the important visual for superman. The S symbol and his personality, were the characteristics which defined him.
I really like his Man of Steel and BvS costume.
Charles Foster Kane he shouldnt...
Reeve is best, I used to work at the design firm that created the original ad marketing for superman 78, never bested.
I don't understand the hate for the MoS Superman costume but love for the BvS Batman costume. You guys liked the overly buff Batman in BvS and didn't seem to care much that he didn't have his trunks on the outside but you hate the Superman costume even though Batman's BvS costume also had the chainmail look that you complained about in this episode. Seems a little inconsistent to me.
MJ C Yeah, the DCEU has problems, but for the most part they've done a great job in the costume department, especially when it comes to the Trinity.
MJ C Batman and Superman are different characters. The harsh chain mail look works for the guy who built something to protect himself, but Superman shouldn't need armor, it makes him seem less powerful.
@@jakemayorquin5460 the chainmail effect is just texturing. it's literally just puff paint. i actually like the chainmail texturing, gives the suit more detail rather than just being plain blue spandex
@@jakemayorquin5460 I agree Superman shouldn't wear or need armor, but the suit is just a bodysuit and is not armor
Out of all the the host on the CZcams shows I watch u are my favorite
Christopher Reeve as Superman is still the perfect superhero casting. He quite literally was Superman.
Classic super suit! Agreed for dceu. I want to see Henry wearing the Superman: Returns suit! (Minus the over amount of shields on the suit tho)
Can we have the dog at the end be a tradition?
Watching this 4 years later now commenting after just watching the Snyder cut for the 10th time, now talking bout Superman’s newest look on his suit
Superman trained by Darth Vader is the best thing I've heard in awhile
Honestly the man of steel suit is the best looking one for me
I agree
What about Batman v Superman?
Once again people shitting on the man of steel superman. Cant just admit it has its positives.
Yes... considering he doesn't anymore, but hey like you said you could stick to the classics and you'd be fine...... I loved Christopher reeves but I also like the take in Cavills MoS. Great channel btw
NowThis Nerd alright fair point. Love the channel btw
Charles Foster Kane
Tf i dont want him to wear RED UNDERWEAR?!
@@NowThisNerd I think Cavill not having the red trunks is fine because there is a legit good reason for it. Kryptonians don't have trunks and the suit is a bodysuit from Krypton
Henry Cavill hands down is my fav 👊👊
I'd say he's the best live action Superman that I've seen so far. Brandon Routh is my favorite
6:33 to 6:37 oh my God
I just wonder how the mother knew that the cloth would resist fire and acid
For real. Does she test the durability of all her clothes?
The new superman costume from justice league is a tiny bit brighter
There’s also the superman suit Ben Affleck wore in the bio pic of the tv superman actor
George Reeves
I have a feeling Superman could punch you through every building
Not hard to believe
My favorite Superman/Clark Kent is Brandon Routh. He's my first live action movie Superman and I loved his performance & portrayal in The CW's Crisis on Infinite Earth's. I really hope he can get a series or movie as Superman again! Henry Cavill is like #2, really close behind Routh.

a) Why no mention of the 1988-1992 Superboy TV costume?
b) There's no Superman actor named "Christopher Reeves." There's GEORGE Reeves and Christopher REEVE.
@JacobSax 129 It is someones name and it does get really annoying seeing it *constantly.* Especially when the person who misspells says that Reeve is their favorite Superman or the best one
Ha ha ha ha ha!! Oh crap.. I sat there thinking so long I forgot what I was laughing about.
Ah the 1940’s
Where in every superhero tv show the superhero sounded like Superman Spider Man Batman etc
Hey guys I been waiting for this for a while
Want a medal
MOS was filled with color and the red on the costume wasn't muted .
The MOS suit is the best Superman suit to date .
Hey you forgot the it’s a bird it’s plane it’s Superman Broadway musical stage and movie version costume!
Reeves is best but Henry fits pretty good too as Superman
The Kryptonian script all over the latest Superman suit is a pretty cool touch. Love the alien look of it. Chris Reeve is still the definitive Superman/Clark but the best suit is Cavill's, imo. Not a big fan of the red briefs, sorry.
I agree with what you said, but I personally am a fan of the red trunks. I love 'em
IM still mad at DC for not giving superman the curl in his hair in the most recent movies
I'm still happy that Clark changes his hair when out as Clark Kent and Superman. Clark's hair is kinda curly and sticks up while Superman is slicked back... in BvS anyway. Superman's hair is now a combo of Clark Kent hair and BvS Superman. I do hope to see the curl return eventually, though I am satisfied with the hair style we have
You mentioned Zack Snyder made Man of Steel... but uh... didn't Christopher Nolan make it first and then Zack Snyder asked for his input on making Batman V Superman? O_o
No. Christopher Nolan did the Story for Man of Steel along with David S. Goyer (Same guys who did The Dark Knight Trilogy). Nolan was a producer for both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Zack Snyder directed both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman
Superman is awesome
Yes he is! I hope we get a proper Superman cartoon, another solo Superman movie with Henry Cavill, and a Superman solo videogame all sometime soon in the future. What about you?
I really dig the Dean Cain suit. I mean it’s basically the Reeve suit but darker colors and kinda different logo but still
The Dean Cain suit really isn't the Reeve suit. I don't see it
@@thenoirknight5729 the construction is basically the same. Both are just a spandex or Lycra body suit with the logo screen printed on the front. There’s definitely differences between them but they have the same bones
Dude why you hating on Man Of Steel that suit was more realistic for 2013-2017
so martha kent was just throwing acid on the suit for kicks
Check our those old fleisher superman cartoons. They are epic.
Still rivaling Superman: The Animated Series as the best Superman cartoon and animated series
Woooo Christopher Reeves
Favourite movie version: Christopher Reeve
Favourite TV version: Dean Caine
Hunny, it’s Christopher REEVE, not REEVES. Only George had the surname Reeves.
Thank you! If I had a dollar for everytime someone said Reeves instead of Reeve when talking about Christopher Reeve Superman
My opinion the new superman suit look the best apart from the old original 50's
Christopher Reeves will always be the number one Superman for me as well I have a tattooh on to my leg
i like the henry cavil superman suit but i just wish the colours were much lighter
I honestly think the blue could be a bit lighter and the yellow on the S shield should be the same yellow as on the belt. That's really it
Superman is the greatest of ALL TIME.
The original
The Gold Standard
The example that everyone should be like, to always be the best that you can be.
Superman is for the ENTIRE WORLD, not just one country.
The mcu suit for captian america looklike super man would wear
Which movie did the animated sequence/scene come from?
here's what I feel about superman's costume:
I do like the one where the top of the cape rides really low on his back, I wish they could incorporate that in a new one, I mean yeah it's not realistic, but it looks really cool. I also like the clasps too, but I always like the pictures of superman with his cap over his shoulder like captain marvel/shazam, I also like it when the "S" is gigantic, a superhero should read as a superhero, ya know.
With superman I also like when the colors are more brighter then darker, more cartoon-y less dark and gritty. It sells that man of tomorrow vibe and the boy scout vibe that superman has. I also like the red undies too and the belt, mostly cause it's so old school at this point that it almost looks alien like this isn't earthling fashion, this is alien fashion. The undies also break up the blue in his costume and they just kinda look nicer.Though the belt I could take or leave, I don't really think it does much for the costume. Also I don't really feel like superman needs to look all that buff, he's an alien he works on alien rules, I mean I don't want a fat superman cause that makes him feel less super, but he doesn't have to be Mr. universe levels of strong. If he looked like your average Joe on the street with maybe a little bit of muscle tone that would be fine, enough to know it's there, but not like a 6 pack with bulging muscles
I also don't like it when superman has an "S" on the cape that makes little to no sense, and I feel like you can read superman from the back without having as "S" slapping you in the face. I also like that splash of yellow to be around the "S" though on the front, it just looks like a nice contrast, and really brings out the red of the "S" as for the live action, I do like just a little bit of filigree on the arms or around the waste or maybe a little bit of a darker blue, just something, that makes it look a little less flat, and it also makes it look more alien. I also like the little mini designs inlaid on the costume like in the boots, and in the skin of the suit, cause it makes it look alien, but also it gives it a nice texture, like you could reach out and touch it.
Red boots too for the same reason as the underwear, and I like a nice long cape that billows, some times they make it like ankle length, but I think it looks better when it drags, cause it looks better when he flies. I also like when superman has something on his wrist like a vambrace, or a bracelet looking thing again cause it breaks up that blue. I also like when the costume reaches up to the neck, again it sells alien, but also kinda futuristic, and a collar is nice like his new 52 design( though there are a lot of things I hate about new 52 designs that isn't one of them, but i wish they didn't give that same collar to everyone)I also feel like the boots shouldn't have laces, to fit more with the alien aesthetic.
Finally I feel like superman should have a little bit of a curl in his hair to the front, yeah I know it's not really part of the costume, but it just helps sell the superman image to me, and it just looks cool and differentiates him from Clark Kent.
Sorry, I didn't mean to make it that long, but it just happened. XD
Superman's suits in MOS/DOJ are God Tier and they just breeze right past them. There's so much depth that goes unmentioned probably due to personal bias. Like, really? The CW suit got more praise than it? Please.
How did she know it resists acid?
I like Tyler Hoechlin's max Fleischer superman suit
R E E V E. Christopher REEVE. That is all.
It was sad to hear what happened to Christopher Reeve
Indeed. He seemed like a genuinely good dude from what I know and he deserved better
Henry Cavill is superman, but Christopher Reeve is THE superman
Good words 👍. What is your favorite Superman suit?
This show is the best
That huge fucking exposition dump at 1:54 tho
I like modern Superman
1:53 how did they figure out it was acid and fire resistant again?
m o v i e m a g i c
Martha Kent is *really* kinky.
Superman Prime
You forgot Ben aflecks super suit
Cris Reeve would have been AMAZING in the 2018 Suit
True 6ft 4 " !!!!!!!!!
Man of steel is my favorite
Love you kya 💙💙💙💙💙
My Kung Fu teacher tells me to scream your name whenever I punch anything
I did make revee costume for fit for me that looks pretty close in movies.
Cool 👍
Man of Steel suit is like the New 52 design
No. The only similarity is no trunks and the suit being of Kryptonian origin. That is it
1:53 wait did she test the cloth to find out it was fire and acid resistant?? Give me an answer
Henry cavill is the best superman and has the best superman suit
MoS or BvS?
Superman isn't the last son of krypton because Supergirl Krypto the super dog and man by criminals survived
That is true. He can't really be "The Last Son of Krypton" if there are 20 others left out there. So I guess it would be more accurate for him to be "Son of Krypton"
Every live action costume always has the discussion of how big should superman's wang be.
Reeve. REEEEVVVVVVVVVE.
Christopher REEVE.
Keanu REEVES.
Try REEEEEEVE. Sorry, one of my pet peeves.
All The suit like superman return looklike yugi from yugioh would wear
I think they’re legally not allowed to use the red trunks anymore due to the legal battle with the Superman creators. Great video though.
I don't think that's the case...
I actually think the man of steel one was my favorite because gave agency and meaning to his suit. It's not just some rinky dink spandex suit from Martha kent's fabric drawer. It's a physical tangible piece of evidence direct from krypton. Superman is literally wearing krypton on his body. it's a kryptonian body suit found in a crashed kryptonian ship and it's a more brightly colored version of the one jor El himself wore. It connects him to his genetic heritage in a more interesting thematic way and I don't mind losing the red underwear because that was never an important part of superman. I like the floating belt buckle because it adds to the alien nature of the suit because it literally came from a different planet. Christopher reeve may be the superman from my childhood but that doesn't mean he's comparable to any superman now and his interpretation should not be held as a standard because it is old and dated and doesn't fit the world we live in now.
just a random very intelligent sir. I have to disagree with that, Reeve's Superman is the embodiment of what Superman should be. A beacon of hope and someone we aspire to be, not a brooding guy that says stuff like "Superman was never real".
Now, I don't hate the MoS or BvS costume, but I prefer the idea of Martha Kent making it. Because Clark didn't choose to become Superman just because he was a powerfull alien, it was because of the moral compass taught by the Kents, and that's what the original costume stands for.
Superman or Batman?
Comment below! 😜

Everyone hates Brandon Routh for some reason! He was awesome and the movie was boring? It was more action packed than the original. Also you kept saying Christopher Reeves but he is Reeve and George is Reeves.
Jetkid 181 Superman returns was a great movie
Thank you for saying this 👍. Brandon Routh is my favorite live action Superman, I liked Superman Returns, and I love Superman Returns: The Videogame. Genuinely wish Routh got a better suit and that he can get another movie or show as Superman
#ChristopherReeveforever
How can I work for y’all?
Am I the only one who prefers the Man of Steel suit...?
The Once and Future Nerd Nope. I love it too. But it's not perfect.
Oh, definitely not. In my opinion, no live-action Superman suit has been perfect yet, but I think the Man of Steel suit looks great and does a cool spin on an old classic.
I prefer the Batman v Superman suit personally
go iren man
Hi I’m new can you do how do you kill slender
Man is Christopher reeve because the suit is better
REEVE, not REEVES.
Thank you 👍
Spoiler alert in the justice league movie he wore the same suit from man of steel But just a little adjustments
Not Man of Steel. It's pretty much the same suit from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but with silver plating
Superman Returns introduce me to superman and i saw the original superman 1 and 2
i like the dceu superman suits i new bought that ma kent made an indestructible suit yes the suit was made by indestructible material from the shop kal el was made but my opinion
