  • Here is another video of one of my drills I do in my practices when I want to teach beginners how to catch a ball. As you see them get better, you can always move back further. Always try to aim for their glove just to give them confidence and will not fear the ball.

    Coaching tee ball for the first time! this is really good and realistic! It’s not for some promo but strictly fundamentals. Got to love backyard baseball!
    Thanks a lot!

    Great job, Coach.
    To have an actual Coach who can teach, and not just a person who talks is the most important thing for all kids. Athletes or non athletes should go through team leadership and accountability environments.

    I don't know how I feel about squishy balls. When a young one gets hit with a hard ball it hurts but they have to get used to that if they want to progress.

    i like it. I highly respect you taking the time to help others teach baseball to tballers. The next generation is in good hands with more people like you.
    I have a bit of constructive criticism for what it's worth to you.
    I don't like the trap drill because when players catch the ball their glove is sideways in front of them most of the time and only high glove side catches will they have their glove held the way you had them holding theirs. So what i do is i have them place their throwing hand behind their back and i use a tennis ball to soft toss it and have them catch it with their glove hand bare handed. this teaches them glove orientation no matter the location of the throw, because as you know, you always want your palm facing the ball if you want the best chances of catching a ball. if they struggle holding onto the ball barehanded i tell them its ok as long as it hits their hand and not them. once they get a few good reps in with that i have them put their glove on and do the same thing. I explain to them the glove is the same as their hand and if they act like their glove is their hand theyll always have the best chances of catching the ball. once they get it down from a soft toss i back up a little bit and challenge them to longer throws. Then i'll have them add their throwing hand to help secure the ball, either helping squeeze the glove or coming over the front of the glove to secure the ball.
    So basically the drill you showed i think will build bad habits you'll have to break later on.
    Teaching youngins like that to hold their glove the right way is the hardest part of teaching tball. the fact you have a drill to help them with that means you truly care about teaching baseball the right way and help them stay safe by using their glove the right way. I respect it! Take care

    This is a great repetitive exercise. The kids picked up on it and helped them really secure the ball during catch. During the games, you can see it working when the kids take turns playing first base.

    My son is 5 he can hit
    He can throw
    He can get ground balls all day .
    But when it comes to me throwing a ball to him he scared to catch it he will do the under hand like you said . Any tips .

    • @mr.sportscoach6965
      @mr.sportscoach6965  Před 2 lety +4

      Hello Ricardo, Do this drill constantly at a close distance until he is not scared. Then slowly move five steps back and stay there until he gets comfortable. Try to be accurate at throwing directly into his glove. Have him trap the ball with his other hand. This drill helped all my kids. I didn’t move back until I knew they were confident and showed they weren’t scared. You need to repeat this drill constantly and they will eventually get it. It might get boring for you but fundamentals are boring but must be done to advance to more challenging things. Repetition Repetition repetition daily is key.

  • @JDSwartout

    Teaching keeping the glove up like that doesnt happen enough at the younger ages. Ive worked with many 9-12 year olds that have the bad habit of turning thw glove over. It's a hard habit to break.

    • @mr.sportscoach6965
      @mr.sportscoach6965  Před 3 lety +1

      you are right I see that a lot. If you are not taught right it does become a bad habit and those are hard to break. You just have to consistently do it. I have spent a whole practice working on catching and throwing just to make my point. Sounds boring but it all finally became a good habit and the kids were more successful out on the field. This was with a 12u recreational softball team.

    • @JDSwartout
      @JDSwartout Před 3 lety +2

      @@mr.sportscoach6965 exactly, Ive spent more time on that than Id like to admit and we still have issues crop up and have to revisit the basics. The other skill that is neglected alot is how to swing a bat. Ive been pulling my hair out trying to create batter swing paths!

    • @mr.sportscoach6965
      @mr.sportscoach6965  Před 3 lety +1

      @@JDSwartout I should be coming up with a couple bat drills that I do to get just that, A better swing path. It’s all just repetition on every day drills like these that will make player more successful. Hope to get them out soon.
