In this video, I try something a bit different... Fog of War Chess. While I didn't fully know the rules when my first game started, I quickly caught on. Let me know in the comments if you want to see more videos like this and what variants I should try next! Try out some of chess.com's newly added variants here: chess.com/variants

A few more iterations of chess evolution, and we'll get a classic RTS.

Why's he playing with fog of war tho, just do "marco" and "polo"
My favorite chess variant is secret queen. One of your pawns is marked as a queen, and only you know which one. It leads to alot of fun
royal pawn is also really nice
I have been uploading chess miniature games, u will love it ❤...
@@aedd3307 I'm not familiar with royal pawn. Does that mean that there's no visible king and one of your pawns is secretly the king?
@@Tehom1 yes, but your king is replaced by a Mann, same movements as the king but capturable, the Royal pawn moves as a normal pawn, but cannot be lost.
@@aedd3307 Interesting. If the royal pawn promotes, I assume it remains royal and must not be lost? It's probably easy to defend the king-queen at that point unless it's taken immediately on promotion.
I can see knights being very valuable in this variant, since it's a piece that can threaten every piece (except other knights) without being seen by that piece. They'd be ideal queen killers.
Wouldn't queens be able to see them as well though?
@@rusher2937 only other knights and adjacent pieces could see em.
As does the bishops for scouting(I'm not sure this is the right term) the board when it becomes an open game
@@anandasatria7734 they become literal snipers
True
Don't forget to promote your pawns to pink wards to deny enemy vision.
wow a fellow lol player, didn't expect to see you here
I love how u say pink wards when u can literally say wards
It means u play LOL
@@fellawin9628 only pink wards deny enemy vision, not any other wards, or wards in general
Roshan B oh yeah since it takes out the vision of other piece it’s a pink ward. Now i get it
What's interesting about this game mode is that you don't know if you are going to put yourself in check. Illegal moves are legal! Crazy.
Yes. That's what the "take the king" win condition was about, if I understand correctly.
@@Tehom1 ooooh ok thanks. I was confused
Tehom Yeah, it seems like checkmate requires perfect knowledge.
@@deg1studios Ya basically it ends when the other person sees the king and takes. You have no idea they can see your king. Just a second on the clock and he would have won. Sad days for opp
If its legal then its not illegal
When re-watching a game, a cool feature would be to show the moving player's view of the fog of war, but show the opponent pieces also, greyed out if they can't be seen.
shift+alt+f removes the fog and you can watch the whole game back with all pieces shown
@@josephruiz8485 I know; I'm saying something more complex: keep the fog of war but show the pieces as well. Just like what we saw on Eric's screen at the end of this video (fog going back and forth) except all pieces are visible, even beneath the fog. That makes it really easy to see what info the mover had at each moment.
@@diabl2master ohhh I see what you mean now👍
I have been uploading chess miniature games, u will love it ❤..
Can’t wait to see this variant played OTB in tournament with huge industrial fog machines
Yo
Great idea!
And they just start smacking each other in the fog
@damn boi even better
There's a unique version of this played over the board, using stratego pieces, but it's like chess960, so you see pieces, you just have no idea what the piece is.

A little tip.
The Scholar's Mate works perfectly in this variant. I tried it 10 times and it worked all the times.
black move 1... Nf6 you move Qh5 Nxh5 thank you
leo hentunen don’t play Qh5
Let me give the best sequence
1. e4 Any Move by Black
2. Bc4 Any Move by Black
3. Qf3 Any Move by Black
4. Qxf7 Kxf7 as he thinks we are just giving up our Queen
5. Bxf7#
The Scholar's Mate does not work against the French Defence.
Madeleine Birchfield true but I don’t think anybody will play it as you want to attack really early because your opponent can’t see most of your moves.
Well that's the basic problem of scholars mate once you know it you can easily stop it
8:42
"Cause they dont know i've have a pawn on e4. Unless they do..."

I feel like pawns should see diagonally even if they can't move there because no opponent peice is there.
Well I guess it just means that square is empty and they are telling you by not telling you
Yes, it still gives you the same information but it would make sense to make the diagonal squares bright
That way, the naive player cannot be under the impression that the diagonal squares may or may not be occupied
Yeah I agree, so rather than the pieces seeing the squares they can move to they should see the squares they ATTACK.
@@cheesiechess3656 In the case of pawns, that's not sufficient. Rather it's that we should see any square that any piece can move to, including captures.
It's probably done out of coding convenience, they already have a list of moves possible, so they just make those visible.
@Utsav Joshi the thing is you already know because blacked out =empty
I feel like the hidden squares should be 1 solid color, the 2 shades is just confusing
Or maybe two shades of grey that are pretty close to each other, so you still see the checkerboard pattern but it's obviously foggy.
That would be Thracia Fog
Yeah
@@Tehom1 or just pure black imo
@@Tehom1 Yeah. And the visible dark squares should be paler -- it's too hard to distinguish between a visible empty dark square and an invisible one.

My first game of Fog of War: "So...I just move the pieces randomly?"
You can place pieces where your opponent can be unsure if it is defended - meaning you can bluff!!
For example at 7:45, the queen and pawn defend, but your opponent can't see them, so your opponent doesn't actually know if your bishop is defended. The risk in that case is that if his d-sq bishop or a knight is looking at b3, he can just trade, and if it wasn't defended, you're down a piece, but there is certainly scope for bluffing.
This mode opens up a lot of possibilities!
It becomes more like poker where you have to take risk
@@dipanwitanandi4274 erm, it’s nothing like poker. And in poker you don’t take ‘risks’. You balance value bets with bluffs so opponents are indifferent to folding or calling.

Underrated comment🤣
And bopping to Santana
@Radionixix not that much harder
I have been uploading chess miniature games, u will love it ❤...
Hikaru seemed a bit stuck in Hellmuth mentality last I watched of his FoW chess. You know the ol' "well you won because you did stupid moves I played objectively better by the book". When he drops that it's gonna be incredible, but he's _very_ good at chess, so it might be difficult for him.

11:02 Best comeback ever. Brink of death but then saved by the timer.
"In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces" - Zapp Brannigan
making chess an imperfect game makes it very interesting.
Eric: we need more vision!
Hikaru: I pretty much know where everything is
1:42 Me talking to girls
"Oh my *opponent* said hi"

This is a bluff game for sure. I assume there is no check in this game so if you know where the king is and you take a pawn (or anything) with a bishop and you "check" the king in the same time, the enemy doesn't know if it's a battery or not. If it's not and just moves away from the bishop he loses a piece, but if it's a battery and the king takes the bishop (that would be an illegal move in normal chess) then it's game over.
I found this variation yesterday and I'm obsessed with it! So many traps 😅
From where can u play these all chess variants?? Please help
when you blunder your king but win on time
you ever just discover checkmate yourself and win?
Huh. That is so similar to what I came up with called "Stealth Chess" (and for all I know, it's already also a variant that other people have come up with). Basically, the modifications are:
You can see all of your pieces and none of your opponent's unless:
- You can see anything directly in front of a pawn. Nothing behind the pawn, but it doesn't matter how far ahead it is (so the game starts out at least with each player being able to see his opponent's pawns).
- You can see anything any of your pieces threaten.
- You can see anything threatening any of your pieces.
- You can see anything threatening any of the spaces your King can move to.
Sounds like pawns would be much more valuable information-wise(and gambits more impactful)
The ability to see threatening pieces is also nice
Oh man I'm so happy to see you specifically trying this variant out, Eric.
I played SC2 a bunch back in the day, and I for sure bet strategies present there will be useful here.
You're streams are so much fun, and I've learned so much from you. I'm too old to become competitive, but I'm young enough to enjoy the game. It is a real pleasure to be able to support such amazing content. You're the best!

Okay so my opponent is moving things - Rosen, 2020
I know there's no pawn there.. unless there is.
They should make a version where the back row is randomly placed.
Symmetric(like 960 and 480) or not though?
That woulr be fun, especially when combined with Hostage and Capablanca
Oh hey its the Fire Emblem Trauma...good ol' fog of unfortune...
Me and a couple of friends play our own unique chess rules. It's classical chess, but on Black's first move onward, each player may move a second piece on the same turn. Meaning you can move twice with two different pieces, but you may not move the same piece twice.
"They don't know I have a pawn on e4... unless they do." 8:43
I've been obsessed with this. I've already beaten an IM, not bad for a 1500. I find it's safest to play very defensively/solid and let the opponent come to you. The best is when an attacking queen moves into the sight of one of my knights.

This is such a devious mutant version of blindfold chess.
As well as having inherent anti-cheat pedigree.
well, people could still cheat, but a new engine specifically for this would be useful if for nothing else then for memory but of course it could have more functionality
Honestly seeing this makes me understand league more. Or at least see it from another perspective.
Like vision is rlly important but face checking with the queen (very valuable ) can be very dangerous.
Also when u face check u should get cover from ur mates so u can at least trade 1 for 1
I'd love to see more of this and other variants
Chess 960 with fog will be great😂
Instead of random placement each player gets to array forces by choice. And "buy" units like 4 bishops.

sounds like Automate with extra steps
9:25 Eric all acting like he saw a double rainbow! ;D
This is probably my favourite alternate chess mode. Awesome
I thought it was going to be 3x3 area around the piece that reveals what’s happening, but this is even better!
This is fantastic content! Astronomical, even!
premove is a setting, tap the settings icon in the top right and check premove, but you can only premove 1 move ahead unlike normal chess. hope it helps
Looks fun! Have to play this soon.
5:30 Crazy how you can see so many light squares into the enemy territory, but not the dark squares.
Also, seems like the knight would be a great scout in this game. He can see so many pieces that cannot see back to him.

That looks like a very good variant.

Amazing content as always!! :)
@5:45 You know the pawn went to b5. Your b4 pawn lost vision of that square - meaning it can no longer enter it - meaning it has been occupied by the piece your opponent just moved, the b pawn.
Eric is my new asmr when going to sleep.
I think opening with double fianchetto is better since bishops can scout diagonally.

Hey! You need to play some more ! I would love to see that. That was cool and epic! :D
I'm pretty sure half of eric's reasoning for which of his games to post on CZcams comes down to whether he can think of an awesome thumbnail to photoshop, or whether he thinks of a funny or clickbait-y title that's too good not to post. Please Eric, never change, we love it.
Unrelated to the chess game but there is the color contrast optical illusion here. Happens throughout but on example is at 3:29, where you can see the f4 and d6 squares look like different shades but they're the same. Could be more pronounced if the background colors were different but the effect is still there.
fun fact, your opponent is an og Minecraft youtuber, assuming it's not a copycat (which, why would it be, his channel has been dead for years)
This is giving me PTSD from all the Fog of War maps in Fire Emblem. Oh lord.
Eric it'd be great to see a game of the "self-capture allowed" variant

Where I can play it ???
Trivia time! Fog of War is a mechanic commonly seen in strategy games. Although the Fire Emblem series of Strategy RPGs is often mentioned as a pioneer of the mechanic (specifically, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, released in 1999), it was actually first used in Super Famicom Wars, released in 1998. Both are made by the same development team (Intelligent Systems) so despite the credit often going to the wrong franchise, it does go the right people. Considering how the very turn-based strategy games that originated the mechanic are often compared to chess, I'm mostly surprised Fog of War Chess wasn't a thing sooner.
