    My question is : how do you maintain the height you want? Is it as simple as choosing your height then continually cutting off any new growth whenever the mood takes you ?

    Hi Terry, I am Pedro, I just started farming durian here in Davao City. Philippines, I like your concept of durian farming and I would to apply this concept on my farm. I saw that you have a canal in between row of plants. What is the advantage of this compared to the "mount type"? I know that this is all design to prevent water stagnation.

    • @TMDurianfarmer
      @TMDurianfarmer  Před 2 měsíci

      Congratulations on your new farm .
      Welcome to the channel Pedro!
      We make mounds so the trees don't get waterlogged in the root system during the monsoon season .
      Another advantage is when we stress the trees out to start flowering by reducing the water the mounds can dry out faster getting better results .
      I hope this helps👍

    Good Day Terry
    Year 2-3 : do you set all the trees to 4 meters height and make the top pruning ? and how many inches from the top you will prune the top off?
    Does all Thai farmers plant musang king at 6x7 m / 7x7 m spacing ?

    • @TMDurianfarmer
      @TMDurianfarmer  Před rokem

      I'll start topping the trees that have reached their target height of 4 m.Ill do a soft prune back to the next upright branch. The next prune will be a hard prune I'll cut them back 1 m once the trees reach a height of 7m .
      I've seen them plant as close as 5m I think that is too close .I prefer to maintain my orchard with a tree distance of 6x7 or 7x7 This is ideal for maintenance with my sprayer I have for my tractor . Reducing labor cost is top of the list for making a profitable farm ,that one of the issues with high toped trees

    • @TMDurianfarmer
      @TMDurianfarmer  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I talk about it in a few of my vids. Well the reason we plant two is for a higher yield .Durian trees also seem to die easily and by having two we get a bit of insurance if one dies we have the other. In my farm I have 350 double planted trees .out of all those doubles 15 of them one died and the other lived no need to replant as we still have one in the ground .. Durian is not an easy plant to grow

  • @doverol9378
    @doverol9378 Před rokem +1

    In my opinion, topping off the tree may not be a good idea as we learned from years of experience, well it depends very much on variety. For example, Blackthorn durian has high possibility of branches breaking off during fruiting/ carrying fruits, usually more than 1 branch may break each year. Imagine how many productive branches left after 5 years ? We need sustainable amount of branches for the longer term.😅

    • @TMDurianfarmer
      @TMDurianfarmer  Před rokem +3

      I see your point but if they are breaking then they are to small for the amount on them.when topping the trees branches grow much thicker and can sustain a heavy load but still you can't allow to over load a branch this is for all fruit trees .

    • @doverol9378
      @doverol9378 Před rokem +1

      Sometimes there is no chance to even trim off some young fruits, furthermore the amount of rain water and fertiliser dictates the fruit size / weight. Strong wind during rainy season (fruit expansion stage) is one of the main problem too. Of course tying up / supporting the branches helped.

    • @TMDurianfarmer
      @TMDurianfarmer  Před rokem +1

      @@doverol9378 many factors come into play not easy to navigate the process best we can do is make sure our branches are strong enough to handle the fruit we allow to grow on them .I see it around my area where some farmers get excited and try to grow too many and they break when bad weather arrives so it's important to not overload a branch.I know it's easier said than done.
