  • My first ever CZcams video. This e-Niro has been transformative for me. I discuss winter driving in Scotland for my pensioner lifestyle, mostly short local drives and how the actual range compares to the predicted range and how this car has eradicated the dreaded range anxiety that I had with both Nissan Leaf and Peugeot e2008.

Hello there. The first time I have come across your channel, and I like your style. I'm very sorry to hear of the loss of your wife. One day at a time. Anyway, I'm a 71 year old bloke who has had his first EV for nearly a year, and I'm very pleased with it. A 2016 Hyundai Ioniq 28kwh, it only has a maximum range of around 140 miles, but, like yours it is an honest assessment. Even in just a year, I seem to have taken a big hit in depreciation, but I am thinking of turning that into a positive, and going upmarket a bit to a Kia Niro such as you have. I am astonished how cheap my car has been to run. I have a running average of 4.8 mpkwh and with Octopus overnight electricity at 7.5ppkwh, it costs next to nothing to run. I don't think the Niro is quite as efficient, but it should still be cheap. Thank you for your very positive assessment of your car. Like you, I spend quite a lot of time on CZcams, and finding your channel has given me something else to look at. Many thanks, and keep buggering on, as Churchill would say.

Thanks for your kind comments. You are the first person to report significant battery degradation. I would be interested to know what your charging regime is like. The difference from the 30 kWh Nissan Leaf to a 64 kWk Niro is simply life changing. I used to drive the whole time with one eye on the battery level, now I don't even think about. There is nowhere that I go in normal usage that I can't do the return trip easily. I agree about the cost. I was just explaining to a neighbour yesterday that I used to put £120 a month in my diesel car, now it's about £20 of electricity and virtually no servicing costs.
I'm glad that you like my style. I am very aware that I am amateurish at best but I think I was just thinking of what to do with myself after the loss of my wife. There is no-one more surprised than me that my little video has had over 4000 views and I have had lovely comments from people all around the globe.

@@NiroPensioner I haven't been terribly clever with my charging regime. Because of the small battery, and the fact that I rarely have a clue what I'm doing the following day, I always charge it to 100%, so I've only got myself to blame if the battery is going south. That is one reason I'm looking at the 64kwh Niro. I can charge it to 80% and still get anywhere I could feasibly want to. I have to wait for the sale of a rental property to go through, though before I can afford it. Fingers crossed! I'll let you know how it goes. I might ask that Jonathan Porterfield fellow to bid at auction for me. He's a great advocate for the Niro. He's done some nice CZcams videos. Anyway, best wishes. Get the dog out for a walk. That always improves the day.

@@peterbunker7165 Thanks for your reply. I think definitely charging to 100% all of the time would affect battery life. Hope your sale goes through soon and you can upgrade to a larger battery.

Similar experience with Hyundai Kona EV 64kwh battery (same platform as e-nero) with 250mile range in winter and easily 300+ in summer (13 degrees C +) (overall average of 4.3 miles per kwh over 39000 miles in 2.5 years, but regularly over 5+ m/kwh in summer). Have tried many other EV's, but have been glad to get back in the Kona after a test drive, although the e-nero would be on my shopping list if I needed a slightly bigger boot and back seats.

I have just bought my first EV and the e Niro 4+ was my choice, managed to get a 2021 just under three years old with only 5000 miles on the clock. I’m absolutely made up with it so far, charge once a week at home and very happy with the range. I’m planning to do some longer trips soon but will never plan to charge away from home or at a holiday cottage, otherwise we will use our other car a dirty diesel! This is first car with apple car play and only tried it today and again very impressed but hated the cable requirement and learned from you ( an OAP no offence) that you can get an dongle, so just ordered one and it will here tomorrow. FYI I have fitted today a frunk box, expensive but really good quality, with the intention of keeping both charging cables in it, the only disappointment is that it takes those with loads of space left but can’t think of thing else to put in there as yet, so a good problem 😂 it came with gas struts not fitted those yet but that will make access very easy. Thinking of getting a space saver wheel and jack, £100ish on eBay, what do you think? plenty of room under the boot floor. Looking forward to more stuff from you

Congratulations on the new channel, it's something I've been thinking about doing (but haven't progressed much beyond that) as I recently retired and wanted to try a few new things. How do you find the editing process? Finding your experiences fascinating, particularly having shared at least one myself, on leaving employment downgraded from a BMW 530e to a Peugeot 2008 to keep costs down and currently thinking about making the move to electric. Please keep creating, your perspective is virtually unique in this segment and I think you may find the potential audience is larger than you might expect. It would be interesting to hear what features you've found useful/useless in each of the vehicles you've driven.

Thanks. Well, I've just reached 100 subscribers which I am really happy with and they are all genuine, I haven't told family or friends that I'm doing it yet so the subscribers are all new to me. I do it for fun really and to try to share information. I started because I found that most of the reviewers on CZcams are considering different vehicle usage to me as a retiree. As you can probably tell, I am unrehearsed. I just start the camera and start talking.I enjoy the process of editing. I use a Mac so I use iMovie which is pretty easy. I tend to just cut the worst of my stuttering and stammering, add in the odd still and title. I like to keep it real. I'm not too worried about appearing slick. I'm glad that you like it though and I highly recommend giving it a go. Thanks again for your comments.

Thanks for such an inspiring video on the e-Niro and UK EV life. My wife and I are retired UK ex-pats living in California. I have been driving EVs for 10 years starting with a leased BMW i3 back in 2014. More recently we bought a Chevy Bolt in 2018 which my wife drives and I replaced my 2014 i3 with a 2013 Fiat 500e (60K on the clock for just $5000) which is great as a local runaround. My 2013 Fiat is probably a perfect testament to the expected longevity of EV batteries. The pack is at least 11 years old by now finding the Fiat average range is down to a little under 80 miles in ideal conditions and about 65 miles in very Hot/Cold times. Bear in mind that when new, the Fiat only had a typical range of 87 miles so I was pleasantly surprised. I'm expecting to see further degradation but it certainly is still a viable vehicle for local use. I was thinking of changing the Fiat out for a used e-Niro but also did a little research into battery replacement and was also pleasantly surprised.
The pack contains readily available standard Samsung modules: eleven 5S and seven 6S. Supposedly using the car's OBD port I should be able to determine individual battery module condition so I can isolate any of the more severely deteriorated ones and replace them at $150 each for the 6S and $110 for the 5S. The labour costs on top will be around $400-$500 to pull, replace and test the pack however a number of local community colleges with vehicle tech programs are desperately in search of work experience EV "project" cars to work on so I thought I might approach an instructor to see if there's interest if I supply a couple of each type of module.

That's really interesting and useful information. Thanks. I knew it was possible to replace individual cells but have never looked into the costs involved. Very useful indeed. I don't know but I guess that it may depend on whether degradation is general across all cells or specific to a few cells. As you say about your fiat 500e though, With my KIA, I can accept quite a bit of degradation before the vehicle would become unusable for me. Thanks again for the info.

The E-2008 as I pointed out in the video would never match up to the range it said on the dashboard. The Niro is always really accurate. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I have had a Kia E-Niro 4+ now 3 years old after a Leaf 24KW for 5 years before that. Yes they are remarkable cars very comfortable and well made and a great drive train and battery which is same as the Hyundai cars. The Battery management system manages the batteries much better than the Leaf and others so that battery degradation, which is small as the battery does not overheat as it did in the Leaf, is compensated by the BMS within the Battery cache so range is not compromised. I charge mine to 80 % and once a month to 100% as this helps the BMS do its thing and the Guess O meter calibrates itself which is recommended in the manual. You are right you will get more miles in summer. Long journeys - the Charge place Scotland in Scotland and Gridserve chargers in England on motorways are expensive but pretty reliable on long journeys. Mine charges upto 77KW on some of the the rapids. One at A1 Grantham services is excellent with about 15 by 150KW chargers on my way from Newcastle to London.

The KIA and sister Hyundai EVs have very accurate GOMs 'Guess o Meters'
Both makes have a hidden 'buffer' of battery capacity you cannot see, it is very likely that at 3 years old your battery state of health will still be 100%. We drive from the Midlands, to the Welsh border, south to the Welsh valleys and back to the Midlands, 280 miles, we have 40 miles left and have no need to charge away from home at all

We have a two year old Soul with a 64kwh bttery and so far I cannot see any evidence of battery degradation. In warm weather it seems to think it will do 285miles on a full battery and about 230 - 40 in winter. The only thing i hanker after is a faster DC charging rate. It maxes out at 77kwh on motorway chargers. I tend to top up after about 100 -120 miles and it takes about 20 minutest to get back to 85%. But like you, most of my runs are local and we have our own AC charger so not really a major issue.

Thank you as an American OAP I'm considering a next car. I'd like to go electric I live outside a beach resort in a semi rural area. Range becomes an issues. Most months I make a trip to visit with a friends about 70 miles away. Medical services here are somewhat thin on the ground and if I need something taken care of if its other than my Internist, (I still think of them as General Practitioners) and need to drive to a major city I need to go about 120 miles. I'd obviously want to recharge at that point but that would be ok. I love my gas powered Kia, and hope to keep it another 3 years but then I think I'll go electric. I have solar on our home so I can generate my own fuel that way. Again thanks this was a great video.

It theoretically could do the 240 miles as well but I've yet to do that sort of trip myself. But so long as you have access to the charging infrastructure, you would easily be able to top it up enough while you were attending your health professional. I guess if you live at a beach resort, you won't be hampered by the low temperatures that I face here in Scotland. Wish you well with it.

I had a 2022 Kia E-Niro on a two year business lease. Without doubt, the worst car I've ever had. I was relieved to get rid of it last month. Fairly good range in summer but be prepared to lose circa 30% of your range in cold weather. Though to be fair, a lot of that is a general commentary on EV's. Also, coming from a BMW X3 into a Kia E-Niro; it just felt cheap. I think EV's can work if you commute within charging distance from home but if you have to tap into the National charging network, then I wouldn't bother.

I bought a 2017 Niro Hybrid in 2020. Could not justify the difference in price between the same year HEV and the E version, being a pensioner as well. Been a great car so far, and quids in on running costs over the e-version, plus no hassle over charging. Do the maths, if you want to save money.

    • @NiroPensioner
      @NiroPensioner  Před 7 dny +2

Although the initial purchase price is cheaper on the hybrid, I think the running costs on the EV win hands down if, as I do, you have cheap rate charging.
