- How I manage the charging settings on the car and home charger for best economy, efficiency and battery health using the Octopus Go tariff, the Evec 7kW charger and the Kia e-Niro app.
If you are considering signing up with Octopus, get in touch in the comments and I can send a link where we can both get £50 credit.
80% is spot on when charging is normally available but 100% if you're making a long trip to visit your family.
Absolutely, Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching.
Hello from South Africa. Am enjoying your videos thank you very much indeed.
Thank you. Wow, South Africa, I didn't realise I had such a big reach. I'm really grateful for your comments. I know I am very amateurish but I just enjoy doing it.
I've read that it's also good for the battery to charge to 100% (using the 7kW wall box rather than a Rapid charger) occasionally to allow the BMS to balance the cells to keep them in good condition and that it's important to allow the pack to discharge below 10% occasionally for the same reason.
Yes, I think you are absolutely right and I do exactly that. I let it run right down this week and last night I charged to 100%.
Please be mindful of fire risk whilst using appliances through the night, ensuring smoke and or heat detectors are in the room with appliances. From a SFRS Crew Commander.
I’ve just bought a Niro and up to my eyes trying to figure out the tech. Thanks for the videos 👍
Thanks for your comments. Yes, I am careful. My dad was a firefighter and drummed fire safety in to us. Here it is mandatory to have linked hardwired detectors in all rooms. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Just discovered your channel, love the unique casual delivery. I'm retired and only need to charge once a week. I've looked at changing to an EV favoured supplier, my understanding is that you get a cheaper tariff during the early hours but do they not then charge you a higher rate for during the day so unless you need to charge every night it's not worth it. I may be wrong so happy to be corrected.
Thanks for your kind comment. Some might say amateurish rather than casual! I don't know about other suppliers but I am with Octopus on their "Go" tariff so, yes I get cheap rate around 9p between 00:30 and 04:30. I charge two to three times a week and it is very cheap indeed. the rest of the time I am on their standard tariff.
Thank you for your helpful and informative video and the previous one too. I’ve read or heard from what I consider a reliable knowledgable person that the optimum charge spread/capacity is to charge the 64 kWh e Niro is up to 76% This was demonstrated in a graph of the charging curve. I also notice when plotting routs on the Octopus Electroverse App that it tends to favour charging no more than that.
Have you any experience or knowledge of this. I do wonder if Electroverse are being very cleaver and calculating these stats and configuring their app to get the best charging speed for all EVs on it app.
I don’t yet own an EV so can’t speak from first hand knowledge.
Happy safe motoring.
I see that the charger engineers decided to move the unit. Must admit when I saw it I wondered if it was ok being installed so close to your gutter down pipe!
Hope your troubles with the manufacturer are all behind you now.
Yes, after the first engineer mounted the box, every subsequent engineer cursed him because access to the screws that hold it to the mounting bracket was nigh on impossible. The engineer thsat installed the replacement unit moved it to a more sensible location. It's all working fine now. Touch wood!
@@NiroPensioner curious also as to which model of Niro you bought? (2, 3 or 4?) not sure you mentioned it before in your videos. If top spec then with all the extra gadgets the efficiency seems to be very good.
That's because the people installing these points throw them in, you pay peanuts and you get monkeys.
The people installing them are not engineers, they are electricians and most of the time not very good ones.
The E-Niro charging curve drops below 50kW at over 70% , according to Fastned Charging.
Thanks for your information. I charge mostly at home on the 7kW charger. I watched a video recently that said for extending battery life 60% max charge is optimal but obviously everyone has to work out what is the best for their driving.
@@NiroPensioner Only reason for a 30-60% charge is if storing for a couple of/ few weeks when away. On a trip 100% is fine but 70-90% is for charging speed/time. The actual benefit is very small if daily used.
I've seen that charging to 100% at least once a month let's the car fully reassess the battery and adjust its efficienc.
28kWh not kw sorry to correct you (4 hours x 7kw)
Glad your up & running, I think the service you got from A/C & the fitters was deplorable. Enjoy now & happy motoring 👍
Thanks for your comments.
@@NiroPensioner your most welcome, I get my first EV on wednesday ( 500e ) & I get a evec wallbox install the week after ! So fingers crossed. Thank you.
@@stanleyhindle6308 I'm sure it will be ok. I have had lots of feedback from people with Evec chargers who have had no issues. I think I was just unlucky.
