- This is something very different to anything I have ever done for the channel, but here's my overlong video essay offering a critique of the plot to Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League by Rocksteady. I hope it's entertaining and insightful and encourages you to never, ever touch this game.

If you aren't familiar with the game: Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is a 2024 action-adventure shooter game developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games. Based on the DC Comics team Suicide Squad, it is an (alleged) spin-off of the Batman: Arkham series, and a follow-up to Batman: Arkham Knight (2015).

This game is a strong contender for a world record of "They all should be dead right now!" moments in all media.
Honestly, it was a genuine treat to have you put together an essay-format critique of this game. I said in the first video that I couldn't handle Boomerang's voice, and it's true, I couldn't watch any of the videos you posted for the game, aside from the short summary video when you "put it to bed." Which made it clear just how much disdain you had for the whole experience, and we've seen you suffer through some exceptionally trying gaming experiences.
But hearing you so thoroughly portion it out like this was very entertaining and insightful, and also a little moving in ways - your bit of praise for the scene with Wonder Woman, your utter disgust with how the game treated Kevin Conroy's legacy as Arkham Batman, that was all very palpable.
If you do other long-format critiques (or praises, if warranted) in the future, I will gladly watch them. This was a surprise to see in my subscription feed, and a very good surprise at that. Thank you.
46:40 Poison Ivy only teams up with Batman to clear the fear toxin because the Toxin was also killing every plant in Gotham. Ironically, this puts her sudden relationship with Harley further into odds as Harley was helping Scarecrow

That bit on Batman, his voice actor and his end really hit heavy. I'm sure you're not the only one who felt that in that moment. I don't feel like that's a personal comment, I feel that's a genuine criticism of the writing and presentation.
All in all, a good video essay. I earnestly enjoyed it more than I did watching the game. An absolute insult to the franchises it is clung to the bottoms of. It always hurts watching the slow-death of art, but it is a balm to see it not go silently.

I thoroughly enjoyed you tearing this game apart. Such a waste of potential. To build on the GotG comparison, the death of Flash should have been a turning point like the Infinity Stone being stolen from Nowhere in the movie. That should have been their moment, realising that this was not a game. That they had to step up, ascend beyond what they thought possible and do better. Heck, you could still have Boomerang cheer for killing the Flash, only for it to sink in that he was actually dead dead (Well, as much as comic book characters stay dead, at least). Rise above, be more than the sum of their parts, all that good stuff.
And then it just... well, falls flat? Nothing goes anywhere, everything sucks.
I feel like the last time we see the real batman, is back in the batcave, not the batman who got capped in the park. Because in the batcave, bruce basically inspires the squad indirectly.

The amount of decisions that needed to be made for this game to happen instead of literally anything else.
1. The game establishes that a JL villain that we’ve never seen the league encounter happened to create a gauntlet that gives the user access to the speed force all so it can be in the Hall of Justice for Boomerang to steal so he can access the speed force himself instead of just….letting us play as the flash…who can already use the speed force
2. The game establishes that Another villain created a working jet pack all so deadshot can steal it from the same place and fly around metropolis instead of just….letting us play as Superman…who can already fly.
Man, this game. Squandered potential as a video game.
Amazing analysis. I hope future games learn from this disaster of a game as I really want more single player story focused superhero games.

I legitimately cried tears of anger watching Batman’s death. Watching one of my heroes die by one of the characters I HATE the most was too much.
And its even worse when hes taken direct bullets from Arkham Knight and Two-Face, and yet he gets shot and thats the end, fuck this game

Even if, by some miracle, future (planned) seasons/dlc's will make the story good, there is a massive, potentially fatal problem with how it is presented in the current product.
If the first impression is horrible, people won't give you the chance to show an even potentially wonderful 2nd or 3rd impression.
When authors are adding plot events for shock value, that make no sense or are not plausible until a later plot revelation, you need to foreshadow something like that is coming.
_Something_ to show that the author knows full well that what happened doesn't make sense or is out of character, and that inplausibility itself will become a future plot point.
Without that, the audience is prone to discount the credibility and writing skills of the author(s), and not stick around long enough for that big reveal.
Even then, the reveal or resolution has to feel like it "fits" into the story, and not just a reactionary cheap copout (e.g. "it was all a dream" or "they were clones" or other lazy overused "twists")
And it should be noted that "multiverse" immediately cheapens the credibility of any plot twist (it being one of the ultimate "can explain anything" copouts). So the writing around it has to be even stronger for the twist to work when in such a setting (hint, this game doesn't have strong enough writing)

I enjoyed hearing your breakdown. Hell, I didn't even see or experience Batman's death save for this video, and it still doesn't sit right with me (even understanding there's no way they could have done much about it after Conroy's passing since it was most likely complete by the then). I'd love to see more like this in the future.
To knock on to the conclusion, you are spot on that this will probably kill Rocksteady, but to be honest, the people who made Rocksteady what it was already bailed. All the folks responsible jumped ship during the development of this garbage, so hopefully we get to see something (without the DC license most likely) from them that can wash the stain of this away.
according to the tie in prequel comics waller is the one running the asylum most likely to make it easier to find and control suitable options for task force X but the game definitely could’ve at least mentioned that in some way instead of hoping people will read the comic instead of not mentioning it at all
I can answer the slot machine question you had at the beginning. Yeah, it's the first skill you unlock as Boomerang and it's exclusive to him. At 5x combo It gives him 20% gun dmg and 50% crit chance on counter shots. Also enemies that get critical counter shot become easier to get shield points from.

Yeah poor Toyman II. Hes kinda like Doctor Light II in that they both take on the name of a villain... Oh yeah the squad has a huge problem with planting a bomb in Ivy, a monster child but they say nothing when Hīro gets one for no reason.
This was a fun style of video, I would be interested in more videos of this nature. Though maybe shorter just to spare Flik's sanity haha. One of the main points about how the characters don't develop is seriously the worst part of this and its a far cry from the old arkham games. But The characters cant develop, cause then they would need new voice lines and reasons to be in the city and you know things that require effort. The only thing this game was worried about was how can we draw in enough people and hope and pray enough of them are desperate enough for superhero games that they stick around for the live service trash. And The amount of blatant skinner box style bs they crammed in it screams designed by committee. Glad I didn't buy it and sad that I watched it played. Honestly just watching the game gave me a headache from time to time.
Yeah, the writing is one of the worst and strangest part of this game. Things like with Ivy is either incompetent writing or simply not caring. There’s simply no chance for Ivy and Harley to have any relationship. They want it both ways. Want the Arkham-verse connection but also want the current movie/comic Harley. And it just doesn’t work.
And yeah there were moments that almost worked. But even those didn’t work well enough.
This game would have never done well. But at least setting it within its own universe might have let it be tolerated.
I always thought the story was more like the bad ending of injustice 2 and it kinda feels like they wanted to do that but then said it was the Arkham story.

Having now finished the video...thank you for playing through this so others don't have to. What an unbelievably insulting mess this game turned out to be...I'll admit I found a number of the jokes they did funnier than you did...but that's just drops of good in an ocean of garbage. This was a very well thought out and put together essay. I look forward to others...hopefully some of them are about good games

No fun fact there was no rocksteady superman. Many seem to think Rocksteady had to make this game instead of a single-player Superman game and Metropolis being the setting is a remnant of early work on that. While there's no denying that they made their name by making Single-Player games as opposed to the co-op live-service shooter that this is, there is no credible report that they ever worked on a Superman game, the one tweet that suggested it later recanted it as a mix-up of studios. Metropolis being the setting is likely out of coincidence in that Rocksteady used up Gotham City in their previous games, and wanting a new location, Metropolis is the next most well-known DC setting.
I thought the story was solid. Boomerang was the best part for me lol I also dont understand how superman, who is weak to kryptonite, got killed by kryptonite bullets. So baffling
Please never used non canon comic as an excused for breaking basic lore 101. Same goes with outdated lore when a character clearly as many changes and updated over time.
