    For the sake of Science, we all got new tattoos!!! Wait until you see Ryo's ... ;) We cover the image of tattoos in Japan, and the downsides to having them while living in Japan. We also invite TSUOMASU from DIE/MAY to talk with us about how it is living in Japan with tattoos. I got an entire three tattoos actually.
    The tattoo parlour we went to is Tattoo SPIN in Meguro. I'll link it down below:

    Some inks have metal in them, an MRI uses large magnets. Does not end well, I was told it can actually pull metals out though your skin. I asked when I saw a sign asking about tattoos the last time that I got an MRI.

      In the US, I cleaned at a hospital for a couple years. In radiology, they asked everyone if they had tattoos that were going to get an MRI. I'm not sure if you were denied (meaning you would have to get a CT scan instead), but they definitely raise a flag because of the possibility of metal in the ink.

    • @TFDwolf
      @TFDwolf Před 6 lety +2

      Anything in the last twenty years will be metal free (in the us at least) due to regulations. Anything before that may or may not have metal in it, which is the concern

    • @MerryDiffers
      @MerryDiffers Před 6 lety +1

      The FDA in the US do not heavily regulate tattoo inks, mostly because it's considered a cosmetic product. It was thought that iron oxide in inks caused burning or burns on the skin, but it can be any metal creating an electric current from an MRI. In the US it's unlikely, but not sure about inks from other countries. Also depending on location of a tattoo and what someone is getting a MRI for, tattoos could distort the image if the tattoo is covering the area being taken.

    The only thing that may interfere with MRI or CT scans is metal. Peircings may be a problem.
    I have many tattoos and unfortunately have had many MRI. My scans were just fine. The doctors were able to spot my tumor.
    It's very dangerous to deny someone medical procedures, especially ones so life safing as a scan. If I hadn't been scanned I could have died. In the case of refusing to treat someone based on appearance should be considered a human rights violation. You should use your platform to help change this or at least get people thinking on how exactly messed up this is.

    They ask if you have a tattoo in the USA before a MRI and CT scan. If you have one they will ask where and how long you've had the tattoo.

  • @pandorarose3
    @pandorarose3 Před 5 lety

    There is nothing about having a current/newer tattoo that causes you to not be able to have an MRI. I work in the medical industry and have never had there been an issue for current Tattoo's. It may be for older tattoo's as tattoo's over 20 years ago many of them had been done with metal in the ink causing there to be some issues if the tattoo is older. But newer tattoo artists shouldn't be using such inks anymore. But they don't even ask anymore if you have a tattoo at least in the US as the technology has gotten advanced enough to not notice that type of metallic issue.

  • @HeinzTheMan
    @HeinzTheMan Před 5 lety

    If I remember some time ago the US didn't do MRI if you had Prison tattoos cause they supposedly contained metal in the ink and could really hurt you. I'm guessing that might be a possible reason, if other countries maybe have metal in their ink . . . .

  • @cerberv5040

    Honestly, this may be related to that myth that if you have tattoos, the composition of the ink can cause the skin to explode in an MRI machine. Which is entirely false but a lot of people believed it for a long time. I believe even in the US long ago, you couldn't get an MRI if you had tattoos but I'm not sure on that entirely.

    Other posters are correct in the fact that some tattoo inks contain iron oxides, which when exposed to the incredibly strong magnetic fields generated during an MRI scan can cause first and second degree burns (the ink will not get pulled out of your skin, stop believing everything that happens on House MD). This isn't likely to be a huge problem with most professionally done tattoos, but tattoos that are done in prison as well as traditional ones done with some very black inks (similar to iron gall ink) do tend to contain a lot of iron.
    The biggest problem, though, is that MRI images are very distorted by these inks, to the point of being unreadable. X-rays and CT scans are similarly affected, as metal shows up as pure white (completely radiopaque) and will block anything in the beam's path in front or behind the area. I guess essentially you're just wasting their time and money? These effects are only a problem in the local area of the tattoo, though, so I'm not sure if you would be denied, for example, a knee scan if you have a shoulder tattoo? Maybe the Uwaga Pies can clarify? :)
    PS Looking to move to Japan in the next few years, so I'm loving all of the wonderful information you guys provide! Keep up the awesomeness!

    Some type of tatoo ink contain metal particles. So mayby because of this they dont allow people with tatoo to get mri.

    Głos z mikrofonu wydaje się tak jakby "suchy". I słychać w tle taki irytujący szum.

    Scared? Sorry, but seeing tattooed people is not a pleasant thing (even of that tattoo(s) are done by pros). It's just DISGUSTING not SCARY.
    And btw, what happened? Did you forget to switch account by any chance?
    Unsub, I guess.
