The 7800X3D is a beast of a CPU 😊 and can boost performance regardless of the VR headset your using. Note, - in the video I stated the OpenXR Toolkit over-rides the resolution of the Pimax software. This, I suspect was an incorrect statement if no upscaling option is selected.

It is great you have some cool new kit that gives you a great experience. A bit of feedback - and I find this more so with that @vrflightsimguy - the Pimax Crystal is completely out of the price range of most people, as is the 4090 and the 7800X3D. I admit to being a bit jealous, but I have a fairly high end setup so this comment isn’t born of pure jealousy! My point is just that it is deflating to see videos parading how great totally overpriced cutting edge equipment is. There are plenty of videos with people showing off their bonkers setups. Your great works are the ones where you give people knowledge and ideas they can employ in their day to day simming. I only say this because I love your content and I would hate to see this become like @vrflightsimguy who just goes on about how good his Pimax is.

That is excellent performance Mark! Our friend Sven will be proud of this one 😅 Interestingly, in comparison to my 13900k, I'm getting the same fps IF I use foveated rendering and my recommended resolution of 3500x4142, so that's very impressive. I do feel a locked 45fps feels smoother however, than higher values in the upper 60fps region, since you are at half the refresh rate of the headset. Great test as always take care.

Great to see the Ryzen 7 series getting some positive real world reviews in MSFS, having watched your earlier video with Dan I also took the decision to go with AMD and for anyone who can't quite stretch to this budget I can highly recommend that the next level down is just as impressive, I'm running a Ryzen 7700X, Asus Tuf Gaming 650 Plus with 32G of 5600 Vengance RAM, Corsair RM850x and if you already have a 24G 3090 as I did save that from your old system and you can save even more and still have a card that will trade blows with a 4070 all day long, yes that means the loss of DLSS3 but that's not a huge trade off, inc case, AiO and few other bits, but transferring all my M.2 SSD and mech drives I was able to come in at a shade under £1k and compared to my 7th Gen i9 every penny has been well spent, thanks for another great video Mark!

nice video... I've had this setup since early April. Can't be more satisfied for the $. You're right in that MSFS is cpu limited. cpu prices being where they are relative gpu's. I will be upgrading cpu's someday when they come out with something faster. However as of today, this combination is still king of the hill for MSFS. Probably won't be anything faster in gpu's for another 15-18 months. I am jealous and still waiting for my pimax crystal to arrive... Have you ever looked into motion rigs? Thoughts on substituting an RTX 4070 Ti and Meta Quest 3 for those with a sub £3k budget overall? With VR is a joystick and pedals (Thrustmaster T.flight Hotas X and pedals) better than simply using the motion controllers? Part of the attraction of the Quest 3 for me is being able to have the PC remote from where I'm sitting using visual desktop I believe? How does the VR experience compare to a triple screen setup? I'm feeling that VR is now seen as the experience of choice and with the coming 55 PPD headsets and new lens tech from Meta coming VR is very much the direction of travel for gaming generally?

Mark, in the pimaxxr control panel, tick the prefer fps over latency and and lock to half frame rate (this will give you motion smoothing locked at 45 fps but doesn't have any issues like using the pimax software. I found with these settings, it is butter smooth and I could actually push resolution right up to 4700x (higher than native) in dlss quality. Try it out. Locked at 45 but the clarity is insanely good in and out of the cockpit. Oh and also use CAS at 60% sharpening.

    • @darrenabrahams5499
      @darrenabrahams5499 Před 11 měsíci +1

@@SimHangerFSit seems to be more than just locking the fps to 45. The smoothness is definitely creating a motion smoothing like asw but without the artifacts. It definitely works right now. The important thing is where you enable it. Don't enable it in the main pimax software. Only those two tick boxed in the pimax xr control panel. (similar to the open xr toolkit interface). Enjoy 4700 resolution in dlss quality with Cas 60! You might take a bit of fps strain in places like London but in the average scenery areas you will be amazed at the clarity coupled with smoothness. Can't wait for DFR with the 7800x3d. Hoping that will give a bigger boost than your previous video showed. Maybe test DFR again with this cpu? The AMD x3D CPUs really are great in MSFS. However I'm a bit confused by the reported render scaling at the 6:34 mark. If you look at the numbers in the line under TA, it shows rendering resolution as 3234 x 3826, not the native res of 4315 x 5100. If you had resolution override off in the Toolkit and yet had resolution set to balanced in the Pimax client, that would account for it. I have a 5800x3D and a 4090 and with the resolution set to max in the Client and no override in the Toolkit, TAA mode render scaling reports the full resolution. With that setting and slightly higher settings than yours in MSFS, I get around 40fps. If I then use DLSS Quality instead of TAA, I get 60fps in rural areas.

The 7950X3D does have twice as many cores but to get the 3D cache to work on it you have to shut down or park half of the CPU cores to idle as only half of the processor has the 3D V cache available to it which means for gaming the 7950X3D is basically the same processor as the 7800X3D as uses the same amount of cores when gaming but the 7800X3D does not have to be adjusted as the 3D Vcache is available to all the cores and is more efficient at using the 3D cache because of this. BUT if you do use your system for a lot of rendering and video content creation those extra cores are usefull for making and rendering your content much faster then the 7800X3D.
So if you are solely a gamer then the 7800X3d is the best choice but if you use your system for gaming and content creation 3d rendering then the 7950X3D might be an option for you.

@@nemisis_wolf that's interesting information. When you describe parking half the cores, does that have to be done manually by the user, or it shuts them down automatically? It would be very annoying to have to remember to disable your cores before flying and then to reenable them again when you want to video encode...

@@gmac2493 in my opinion always best to run latest chipset drivers to get the best out of any motherboard.
MSFS is am XBox title so running MSFS and having the CPU automatically identify it and automatically parking the cores should be the easiest way for that particular Sim
If you use other programs as most of us do while in flight sims they should get the use of the other cores from what I'm led to believe.
To check it's working is easy CTRL, ALT and DELETE, select task manager, then select performance tab, then select CPU on the left at the bottom click open resource monitor! You'll now be shown a screen showing what cores are busy and which ones aren't.

This makes me want to return the discounted HP Reverb G2 I just got a couple of weeks ago… I’ve used it for a few flights with my 5800X3D and RTX 4080 and the 3D effect is great but the blurry view outside the sweet spot with 1440p-like resolution is not ideal, compared to the 4K sharpness I’m used to on my 65” OLED. On the other hand, the price is very reasonable to me, I’m not sure I’d be using VR enough to justify a headset that’s 3 times more expensive.
Is it possible to also use the Pimax with my PC specs at full resolution and very high detail settings in MSFS or do you need to dial it down a lot from the settings used on the Reverb?
Is VR now usable full time on Pimax, or at least much longer than with the G2? I found it pretty tiring and I was done after a couple of hours straight, whereas on my 4K TV I have no fatigue. Help me make the decision, if I should just put off VR some more and wait to buy the Pimax and potentially have to upgrade my system, or if a G2 at a 30% discount and 5800X3D/4080 is still a great VR experience in MSFS and Elite once you dial the settings right.

In either case MSFS 2024 promises to offer much better performance for the same level of graphical fidelity and to be honest the combination of a 13900K + RTX 4090 isn't too bad either! 😄

Games will never take advantage of that many cores. It's just not how they work. Even 2024 which will be optimized for multithreading from the start, the 'main thread' of the game will always be the dominant factor, and it will always benefit from clock speed and cache.

@@jimmy8x541. I can see where you are coming from. Of course the goal is to reduce the main thread and practically how many cores are needed for that I'm not sure, we know MSFS presently only supports 4 cores. MSFS is simulating many systems though, not just the planes, so there is far more scope to use CPU cores than traditional games. Forget the DCS comparison too, there's so much more going on in MSFS, that's not a good comparison. I guess we'll see how MSFS 2024 does eventually and if more than 8 cores actually give a better performance, you are probably right though. Thanks for replying.

@@dtrjones I think the most important factor to consider when estimating how many cores MSFS 2024 may be optimised for, would be the fact that, like MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024 will almost certainly be getting a release on XBox consoles, and hence, I'd be betting that we'll see minimal multi-core performance gains on any CPU with more than 8 main cores, 16 threads. But time will tell.
