Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers encounter passion and tragedy in Kenneth MacMillan's 20th-century ballet masterpiece, screened live around the world and on BP Big Screens on 11 June 2019.
Principals of The Royal Ballet Yasmine Naghdi (Juliet) and Matthew Ball (Romeo) perform the tragic Bedroom Pas de deux from Kenneth MacMillan's 20th-century ballet masterpiece.
Kenneth MacMillan's passionate choreography for Romeo and Juliet shows The Royal Ballet at its dramatic finest. Sergey Prokofiev's iconic score provides the basis for the ballet's romantic pas de deux and vibrant crowd scenes, while 16th-century Verona is created by Nicholas Georgiadis's magnificent designs.
In 1965, MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet was given its premiere at Covent Garden by The Royal Ballet and was an immediate success: the first night was met with rapturous applause, which lasted for 40 minutes, and an incredible 43 curtain calls. The title roles were danced by Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn, although the ballet had been created on Christopher Gable and Lynn Seymour. It has been performed by The Royal Ballet more than four hundred times since, as well as touring the world, and has become a true classic of the 20th-century ballet repertory. - Zábava

Yasmine is so incredibly expressive, she captures the intensity of being a teenager with that hint of having to grow up too quickly that its just sublime.

THE AMOUNT of emotion that Yasmine and Matthew are showing in this is purely like non other, they instantly have you connected emotionally with every move and stroke

That's what I was thinking about! She seems to be so light, and when she's on pointe it looks like she's floating! She's definitely one of the best ballerinas I've ever seen.
Look at the desperation in her eyes! She is telling the story from head-to-toe 😭 Matthew is just a dream, fighting with her, knowing he must go but trying to help her understand. Magnificent!

I took my friend to see the ballet because we both love ballet and I love Romeo and Juliet, she however did not and I was trying to get her to enjoy the story; the ballet made her love it, she believed in it. Only truly talented dancers and actors can accomplish making people believe and cherish a story❤️

You dont have to know anything about ballet to see pure class and heavenly couple. They are both exceptionally talented. There is a lovely clip of him and his partner Maya dancing in a square in london outside hes got trainers on showing just what they can do in completely different surroundings and still look wonderfull.
Magical performance I saw of them June 1st in London. The RB continues to show itself as one of the crown jewels of the ballet world.

When I see them together, I am reminded of the incomparable Alessandra Ferri, prima ballerina assoluta, and Angel Corella........... the same magic. Exquisite lines, feet, expression and harmony. Simply sublime....
Yep i agree. 2 of my favourite dancers. Very similar to ferri. Adorable. Rb has a lot of good home grown talent now and wonderful men like willliam bracewell and reece Clark. Im an old addict and have watched many incredible dancers come through but this is a particularly exciting period along with favourite ofcthe last 20 years Nunez who is still incredible.

Yasmine Naghdi and Matthew Ball make a beautiful Romeo and Juliet. I love the Fonteyn and Nureyev version of course and in the 70's Leslie Collier and Anthony Dowell were wonderful too. I like the freshness of this couple, the intensity and connection between them is nice to watch.

This is how you should shoot a ballet. Without unnecessary cuts in the editing. The Royal Ballet is one of the few companies that knows how to do it. :-)

Listen, Fred Astaire once said that since his movies couldn't have love scenes, he made the dancing the love scenes. I absolutely think the same goes for ballet. This scene is a perfect example, as is the bedroom pas de deux in "Manon." It's one of the things I adore about ballet: how the dancers can convey the emotions that come with sex and love through a romantic pas de deux that is accessible for every audience.

Notice the foreboding theme in the background that Prokofiev cleverly inserts - it tells us he must leave and this will end in tears. The music tells us, not the dancing.
