  • Here is an update on how my cactus and succulents are coping up during the extreme summer heat in the desert of Nevada, USA. My cactus, aloes and haworthia are doing better than my leafy/fleshy succulents and epiphytic cactus. This video will show my potted succulent plants, my mini desert garden, as well as the cacti that I have planted in the ground.

      You are covering your cactus with black net. Black colour attracts more heat. So instead of protecting your cactus you are giving them more heat outside in the environment by the net

    Hi Anna, You have Beautiful collections of cacti and succulents. Yes I notice during The hottest month of the year like August my cacti also experienced sun scorching especially when they are directly expose to the sun with no shade at all. Their skin got wrinkled and shriveled. I just water them at least 3 times in a week and they become plumped again. Thanks for sharing those ideas of covering some temporary shades for the plants.

    Weather effects all gardeners. To be too hot, dry and sunny for cactus is quite a challenge! Cactus in nature often protect themselves from extremes by growing next to , or under shrubs and trees. Some cacti shrink down into the ground to reduce their exposure to the elements. In spite of being tough and adaptable, during severe climatic conditions even mature cactus can be injured and die. ~ One trick I use is to double pot plants that get a lot of direct sun. That is, you place your potted plant inside a slightly larger empty pot. This shades the grow pot and helps keep the roots from overheating. ~ Hopefully cooler weather will come your way soon.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 4 lety +1

      LOVE OF PLANTS 🌻, thank you for the added info. 🙂 That pot trick is very smart. I also am slowly moving away from using plastic pots. Some of them get so hot and I had a couple that even melted! 😔

    I live in Ontario Canada. The summer is hot and the days are long. I keep all my cacti in a greenhouse with the doors open but as you can imagine with our day time temperature of 90 plus degrees the temperature in the greenhouse is over 100 degrees. I've had good luck putting the pots in a deep tray of water every few days and let them soak. They get little shade and are growing strong and fat. No etoliation. Even cactus that are sensitive to too much sun are getting fat and strong.

  • @FernandaNascimentoOrchids

    Very nice Ana, they look good neverthless. The shade cloth is a good option.They are desert plants but their natural habitat growing in the ground provides more humidity than enclosed in a pot. Still they look fine to me. Aren´t plants awesome? I love the way they adapt.

    Hey Anna, I like that I see u using a shade cloth. We actually purchased one for the greenhouse and put it on but took it back off because of growing tomatoes. I’ve been moving mine around to shady areas of the greenhouse to protect them. I have a 50% shade cloth and I think next year I’ll put it on late April early May and leave it on all summer. Good video, I can’t imagine your heat and we complain about 93.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 4 lety +1

      Yeah. Summer here is brutal. The shade cloth helped a lot as some cacti even started re- blooming as soon as I put them on. It must be hard for you to balance the lighting in your greenhouse as you have a variety of plants growing inside. Good luck! Soon it will be winter and we’ll be complaining about the cold temps. LOL! 😁😉

I've been thinking about moving to Laughlin and, of course, bring my cacti and succulents with me, but I apparently have a lot to learn. I'm in CA now where I leave them outside year round...it never entered my mind that I couldn't do that in NV. I also grow orchids and plan to bring those with me as well. Do you still grow any indoors? Mine have always been indoors so I'm thinking I will just have to provide some humidity. I'll be watching a lot of your videos this weekend!

      Hello Eileen! Laughlin has similar weather to Vegas. Your cacti will love it but your succulents would have to be protected in summer. I used to grow a few orchids indoors. Sadly, I lost them one by one as we usually take one or several long vacations every year. I had nobody to water them and the dry air even inside the house quickly made them wither. Is it ok to use the tomato fertilizer this time of year in August? Not looking for flowers but wanted to keep them healthy in winter. If not what fertilizer should I use? Thanks for the great videos. Hi Kerry. Wow, it is already cooling down in NJ, I am jealous! 😉 Personally I don’t fertilize when fall season starts because I want my plants to start transitioning to their winter dormancy. Fertilizing May encourage winter growth which I do not want since my cactus stays outside in freezing temps during winter. 🙂
