  • @roddycavin4600
    @roddycavin4600 Před 11 měsíci +1

The biggest question on the whole operation was why was Gavin told to prioritise the Groosebeck Heights over Nijmegen bridge. The British landed 8 miles from their target but still made the bridge securing the north end. The 82nd in the centre were too slow in advancing on a relatively undefended Nijmegen bridge. The question that puzzles historians is,if Gavin had secured the bridge and 30 corps had crossed it rather than fight to take it, would they have made it to Arnhem on time? Also many historians now doubt Boy Browning made the statement ' we tried to go a bridge too far.'

History Buffs is pretty damned good, but just like the makers of the A Bridge Too Far, History Buffs is not really using the latest historical information that we have about Market Garden. In particular, the failure of the 82nd Airborne division to fully secure both ends of the bridge at Nijmegen as soon as possible is now known to have been a huge oversight by both the commander of that unit and General Browning. So this video of History Buffs is great, but not 100 percent thorough in looking at the inaccuracies of the movie. 🖖✌

Germany was more concerned about making one last thrust deep into Europe outside of Germany (the Rhine river being the border to Germany) and I'm not so sure, historically, how much Germany used in its "defense resources" before it was going to make its great push into Europe and split the allies later in winter with its latest tank superior Panzers. The Battle of the Bulge followed just a few months of this failed allied crossing the Rhine too early ambitions we know following World War II - September of 1944 to later March of 1945 battles in our history books.

In this case History Buffs gets a bit wrong.
Monty didn't plan or run operation Market Garden, it was planned and ran by Gen. L. Brereton USAAF of the First Allied Airborne Army.
The movie, although a great war movie doesn't cover what really happened in the operation. Even going to the extent of not saying the major factor it failed, Gavin and the 82nd NOT taking Nijmegen bridge on time. Also trying to blame XXX Corps for taking their time, when they actually arrived at Nijmegen SIX HOURS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE, just to find out Gavin HADN'T TAKEN THE BRIDGE.
So don't take all what you're watching here as true.
Cornelius Ryan had a hatred towards Monty, and this is why he was implemented into the movie

I don't remember what brought that movie to my attention, but somehow I had found out that Sir Sean Connery was in it (I follow a number of James Bond-related channels) and I felt compelled to watch him in one of his mid-career roles. Brilliant addition to your reaction videos. Some directors try very hard to get it right (RA Gandhi is also well researched and incredibly well made... Hence best picture win). Some go over the top, bordering on propaganda, some go for the feels and get it wrong. Some, like Spielberg, Francis Ford Copula, and Gibson, try to show the grit, the grime, the gore, wholesale slaughter of war, which has a massive impact in and of itself. There are mistakes in the remake of Dunkirk, for example. A really good movie, but not overly accurate with the evacuation. I love the extras as I deeply respect movie makers (even when they get it wrong), as so much goes into the making, and all departments deserve credit. For example, a few critics didn't like a particular scene (no spoilers) in Spielberg's masterpiece, Schindler's List, yet it's based in fact, and the critics got it wrong. Thanks again. A really great share.

  • @davemac1197
    @davemac1197 Před 2 lety +5

Sorry Che, I've seen this documentary before and as Lyndon CMP says, it has a lot of inaccuracies in the documentary. In fact, in general tone I find it more biased than the actual movie in many ways. At least I can watch the movie again and again and enjoy the marvellous script by William Goldman and the performances of so many star actors, but History Buffs, on this subject, is very mainstream in its approach to Market Garden.
One of the things I find extraordinary is the attitude to Montgomery's absence. His Chief of Staff was sick, so he was doing two jobs, but he was also 21st Army Group commander, with both 1st Canadian and 2nd British Army under his command. This operation did not involve the Canadians, apart from some engineer companies that were attached. So the most senior British officer involved was 2nd Army commander General Miles Dempsey, who had Horrocks' XXX Corps under command, as well as the flanking VIII and XII Corps, and the attached 1st British Airborne Corps (Browning). Dempsey was there, in reality, he made several visits to the front lines, but he wasn't in the movie. It was Dempsey that took the decision to withdraw 1st Airborne Division (Urquhart), not Montgomery or Browning, although I think Browning was at the meeting along with Horrocks. That's one point.
Second, he talked about the confrontation between Major Cook (Robert Redford) and Captain Peter Carrington - he's not even in the film. The confrontation in the film is with a British Major (he has a crown on his shoulder for a Major, not three pips for a Captain), so he must be Carrington's boss, not Carringtom himself. So he got that wrong. That's a basic error staring at him on screen. The real confrontation was allegedly between American Captain Moffat Burriss (who was interviewed in the documentary) and Captain Peter Carrington. They were equal in rank, so Carrington told him he can't order him to move. Another version was that it was one of Burriss' platoon leaders, a Lieutenant. So two American officers claim to be the officer confronting Carrington, and Carrington said the claims were "extraordinary" because no confrontation happened at all.
The documentary does not depart from the conventional wisdom on the Market Garden mythology, like the movie itself. Newer research does. The one fact the Americans cannot avoid is that the 82nd Airborne Division failed to secure the Nijmegen bridge in the first hours, when Dutch sources said it was defended by 18 Germans. I think this is a source of embarrassment for them, and they've been blaming the failure of Market Garden on everything but themselves ever since. The British commanders did not want to upset them, so they kept their mouths shut and took all the nonsense criticism about bad planning and faulty intelligence without comment. Lyndon has commented on the intelligence picture, and I think he's about 99% correct on that, so I have little to add.
The only CZcams source that seems to have this right is the TIK history channel. He's done a series on Market Garden, a long form breakdown with all episodes, and also videos on 'was Gavin to blame?' and one on Browning, I think as well. TIK does his homework and has come to the clear conclusion that Gavin was responsible for the 82nd Airborne failing to capture the Nijmegen bridge. I've gone a bit further and read three books by 82nd Airborne historian Phil Nordyke, and the answer seems to be in his combat history of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment - Put Us Down In Hell. Its commander was an administrative officer who volunteered at the start of US airborne formation in 1942, and had risen through the ranks as his unit became scaled up from the 508th Battalion to a full Regiment. In Normandy, there was a problem with the 508th's Executive Officer (the second in command and assistant to the commander). He was removed and replaced, but there was still a command problem at the top of that Regiment still, when they were selected by Gavin to take Nijmegen for Market Garden. Several hours after landing, Gavin got a report from the 508th's Liaison Officer that the Regiment was dug-in on the Groesbeek ridge, south of Nijmegen. Gavin was furious. The LO had never seen Gavin so angry. They jumped into a Jeep to get over to the 508th and "get them moving". The SS units moving down from Arnhem got to the Nijmegen bridge first, and then held it until the combined operation with the Guards Armoured Division finally took the bridge after a delay of 36 hours of hard fighting in the city.
Somebody once described Market Garden as being like trying to thread seven needles with one thread in one go, and you only had to miss one to compromise the whole operation. That's exactly what happened at Nijmegen. Apart from that one unforced error, it was actually working.
Great reactions from you on both videos, so I am subscribing and giving the movie reaction a 'like'. I wish you continued success with the channel. Cheers!

      Dave M A C,
What an excellent post and thanks for mentioning me.
The Moffat Burriss thing has always intrigued me. I never thought Burriss was ever telling the truth there. Burriss claimed there was "a whole corps of tanks there" doing nothing. This is 100% a false claim as only five tanks got across the Nijmegen bridge that evening, and two of those were damaged. The "corps" of tanks were spread up over twenty or so miles, from Nijmegen to Mook to Huemen and further south. Burriss was clearly not being truthful, so we have to wonder about the rest of his claims.
As you said, Carrington denied the exchange happened. More to the point, Carrington was well known in the 1980s. He was British Foreign Secretary under Thatcher, Secretary General of NATO and received a well publicise medal of honour off President Ronald Reagan. Now Burriss kept this mysterious British official nameless and faceless. Had he genuinely encountered Carrington face to face then surely later on he would have known who he was? Yet Burriss never identified the phantom British officer, conveniently. Very very odd.

      Dave M A C,
Also it's been muted that perhaps Gavin should have assigned the 504th PIR dropping the nearest to the Nijmegen bridge and going for it instead of the less experienced 508th PIR. By all accounts, Gavin made the wrong decision there, as well as not ensuring his orders were completely understood by Lindquist.
Still, British 1st Airborne failed at Arnhem regardless and never took the Arnhem bridge. The Germans always controlled 99% of the town, as well as the bridge off ramp so I don't think anything would have changed except perhaps XXX Corps may have been able to rescue some of Frost's men had they got there on the 19th. The Germans had good fields of fire against any tanks crossing the Arnhem bridge. Not that XXX Corps could have crossed it anyway, due to the road block on it, strewn as it was with the wreckage of Grabners SS column.
The plan for a successful Arnhem operation called for the whole bridge to be captured, as well as much of Arnhem itself, in a protective defensive ring to the north, east and west a few km in extent so that XXX Corps could exit the bridge and fan out on the other side through Arnhem, establishing a proper strong bridgehead. That was never going to happen once so little of 1st Airborne even reached the Arnhem bridge area.
      Cheers.

Let's play a war game.' ..Everybody dies." ..I actually LOVE that line, because I knew by the end of this film, the movie was made to project an anti-war sentiment, and I didn't mind the writers taking "artistic" liberty with the dialogue to make the anti-war point clear.

Also saying Horrocks was wounded in Italy when he was wounded in Tunisia was poor from a historians point of view. The big question is,if the 82nd had taken a relatively undefended Nijmegen bridge would 30 corps have reached Frost? Also 30 corps making only 7 miles and stopping at Valkenswaard on day one is always mentioned. Making over 40 miles on day two never is.

The whole movie and historical events are yet another case of military loss(and many lives), not because of actual strength of arms, but because of political decisions made in denial of battlefield intel reports. I believe America's involvement in the Vietnam war was a massive case of political decisions gone wrong. The British had a first rate intelligence gathering operation in WWII, but many times it was ignored. I think a good example of good use of military intel being used properly is the battle of Midway.

This movie gives s completely wrong impression though.
In reality, the British 1st Airbornes intelligence summary of 13th September clearly states that a grouping of around 10,000 German troops "may represent a battle scarred panzer division or two reforming in the area".
That is why they took along over 50 anti tank guns.
In truth as well, the recon photos only took pictures of a handful of obsolete early war tanks of the third rate Herman Goring training battalion. This unit was rightly ignored. It played no real role in the operation and was down in the Eindhoven area when the paratroopers were dropped. It was attacked by fighter bombers on the first day and scattered.
The Germans tanks that made the difference in Market Garden actually came in from Germany in the days that followed. Allied intelligence knew nothing about them. They were all deep inside Germany prior to the operation.
Kompanie Mielke, with Panzer IIIs and IVs arrived on the 18th.
Schwere Kompanie Hummel with Tiger Is, and Brigade 280 with Stug III assault guns, both arrived on the 19th. As did Panzer Brigade 107 with Panthers and Jagdpanzer IVs.
Schwere Panzer Abteilung 506 with Tiger IIs didn't arrive until a week after the operation began.
Most people mistakenly assume all these units were already there but were ignored by allied intel. Not so.
The two panzer 'divisions' that WERE already there (9th and 10th SS) were both at less than half strength and neither had a, single tank available between them. They had lost them all in Normandy and hadn't yet received new ones.
The 3 allied Airborne divisions in actual fact had enough men to deal with the German forces that were there, had the plan been executed differently. Delays and the wrong decisions made by the air commanders however, allowed German reinforcements from Germany to arrive before the airborne divisions could complete their missions.
That is the bottom line really. Even the Germans concluded that the main mistake made by the allies was dispersed drops and over a number of days, not intelligence failure.
As I said, this film gives us the wrong impression. It even makes us believe that Frederick Browning was in charge of the paratroop force. Completely incorrect. General Lewis Brereton, an American, was. Brereton made all the big decisions yet conveniently does not even appear in the film, presumably to not upset the American market.

This, as others have pointed out in the comments in considerable detail, is a very poor historical assessment of Operation Market Garden. It simply follows the general idea portrayed in the film that Market Garden was always doomed to failure, and it was all the fault of Montgomery/the British. The movie had to sell in the USA and American audiences are famous for having no interest in films that are not about America/Americans or in which the Americans are not the heroes. The concept of Market Garden was not, in itself, a bad idea. There were certainly significant risks (that's war), but the potential prize was also very great. Ending the war two or three months earlier would almost certainly have saved hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of lives. (Not to mention the possibility of saving large swathes of Eastern Europe from occupation by the Soviets.) One simple fact demonstrates that success was far from impossible. XXX Corp had to advance 63 miles along an "impossible" road to reach Arnhem. Even with everything that went wrong, especially the failure of Gen. Gavin to take the Nijmegen bridge as a priority, XXX Corp managed to traverse 60 of those 63 "impossible" miles.
Market Garden was a high risk/high reward operation which failed for a variety of reasons, but that doesn't necessarily mean it was a bad idea. War is a risky business. Who knew!? As always, however, victory has a thousand fathers - defeat is an orphan.

      Hi,
Well to begin with, History Buffs gives the wrong reason why Montgomery didn't have much to do with the planning for Market Garden. The real reason was that Montgomery was only the commander of the British 21st Army Group and he had no jurisdiction over the air forces. In short, Montgomery was relegated to a back seat role and the operation was largely taken over and planned by the commanders in the First Allied Airborne Army, USAAF and RAF. In particular, Brereton, Williams and Hollinghurst. None of these feature in the film.
Montgomery tried to argue for double missions flown on day one (i.e more paratroopers dropped on the first day) but Brereton, with Williams, totally rejected this proposal and there was nothing Montgomery could do about it.
Montgomery also had the idea for US 101st Airborne to be dropped over a wider area, covering both sides of the Wilhemina Canal at Son, but General Maxwell Taylor of the 101st complained against this idea and got his way. Montgomery had to back down. Ironically had Montgomerys idea been agreed to then the Son bridge would likely have been captured and no need to spend 12 hours building a Bailey Bridge.
History Buffs makes it seem that Montgomery wasn't that bothered. That wasn't true. He tried to involve himself more, but as you see, the air commanders basically shut him down and decided on their own plans.
There are other examples where History Buffs gets it wrong.
Just subscribed by the way. Have a good Sunday.

Another example is that History Buffs claims Browning ignored reports of two SS Panzer Divisions in the area. Again, that was not true.
British 1st Airborne was given the intelligence report on 13th September (4 days before the operation began) that a grouping of around 10,000 German troops "may represent a battle scarred panzer division or two reforming in the area". This is why 1st Airborne took along over 50 anti tank guns. In truth, the two SS panzer divisions there (9th and 10th) were at less than half strength and didn't have a single tank between them. They had lost them all in Normandy and hadn't received new ones yet. They didnt receive their first replacement Panther tanks until the 20th, when 8 arrived directly from the factory. This was after Frost had surrendered.
The tanks that did the damage in Market Garden came in from Germany in the days that followed. Kompanie Mielke arrived on the 18th, Kompanie Hummel (Tiger tanks) and Brigade 280 arrived on the 19th, as did Panzer Brigade 107. None of these units were even in the Netherlands before the paras dropped.
The photos that the recon plane took were of a mere handful of early war obsolete tanks of the Herman Goring training battalion. They played no role in the battle. This unit was in the Eindhoven area and was attacked by allied fighter bombers on the first day and scattered. This unit was rightly ignored and dismissed.
The real Roy Urquhart was disgusted by the way Browning was portrayed in the film and wrote a letter to his widow (the writer Daphne du Maurier) saying how sorry he was.
Lastly, to answer your question on Patton. Patton had already been trying to take Metz before Market Garden was even decided on but he wasn't successful. The Metz operation began on September 6th and still hadn't got anywhere when Market Garden began. In fact Patton couldn't take Metz until well into November. Patton's Lorraine campaign failed, with nearly four times the casualties of Market Garden. Nor was Patton in the best geographical location to deal a hammer blow to Germany. He was too far south. The German industrial heartland of the Ruhr was the most important area to aim for, and it was Montgomerys 2nd British Army and Hodges US 1st Army which were on the right line of advance. Not Patton. The US 1st Army tried right after Market Garden but got bogged down in the Hurtgen Forest and around Aachen, and fared no better either.

Shows one how easy it is for power to alter history. I grew up as a Christian. I am not particularly glad to say it is not now the case as I have found it harder and harder to believe that a Deity could fail so miserably. A senseless force as evolution at least reflects our species state of being. Anyway, I apologize for my sullen thoughts. Currently affairs are a drag.

?? Well I don't think he is a 'nerd'. He seems to be a historian who also loves movies and really cares about the historical accuracy of the movies he loves. I think that's great honestly.

Nick Hodges is no historian. He's appallingly read. I know this because I provided him with all of the research and script BEFORE he started anything on this video. The finished product was a hugely reduced amont of the script I did. Hodges got co-writing credits as he contributed items on dvd extras. Hodges has only sketchy knowledge of films and TV. programmes.
Many supposed "facts" highlighted by Hodges are outright wrong. I tried to tell him where he was wrong, but he wilfully ignored me, e.g. the surrender demand to Frost didn't result in Frost saying Go to Hell". In fact a captured Brit para sergeant was sent by tge Germans under a flag of truce to discuss surrendering, under Arnhem road bridge ramp. That sergeant simply broke his paroke to join Frost. There was a huge amont of my research (6 months of it) that was ignored to "Monty bash" and hero worship the Yanks. I was told by him that the reason was because the majority of his subscribers are Americans.
Do you want to know more?
    Nick Hodges is a charlatan.
