Nice to see someone watching the redux cut, most of the reactions I watched, were using the original cut. The main problem with the redux that people keep mentioning is the pacing issue, honestly having never saw the theatrical cut it never bother me. Plus I think the redux version gave more character development than the original cut, I especially liked the pause in the French plantation.

It helps if you have seen a lot of Americsn westerns. Richard Pryor cowrote the movie and was meant to play sheriff Bart. Only Mel Brooks could get away with making a movie with this kind of humor! Recommend Young Frankenstein and History of the World Part I.

Martin Sheen is the father of Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez, both of whom very much resemble him. This movie was made just a couple of years after the US left Vietnam in 1975. Even after the US left, Cambodia was plunged into murderous chaos and (Communist) Vietnam fought against China, and the Hmong who had been allied with the US were hunted down and slaughtered, so there was still a massive amount of warfare and horror ongoing.

The argument over Quantrill is a reference to the civil war fought in Missouri and Kansas. The Best movie about that theater is Ride With the Devil directed by Ang Lee and starring Toby Maguire and Jewell. The Youngers and James were involved in that

I prefer this over the 1968 version, mainly because of Hailee Steinfeld and Matt Damon, plus the Coen Bros. Its also more faithful to the book.

Horrific stuff!

This, as others have pointed out in the comments in considerable detail, is a very poor historical assessment of Operation Market Garden. It simply follows the general idea portrayed in the film that Market Garden was always doomed to failure, and it was all the fault of Montgomery/the British. The movie had to sell in the USA and American audiences are famous for having no interest in films that are not about America/Americans or in which the Americans are not the heroes. The concept of Market Garden was not, in itself, a bad idea. There were certainly significant risks (that's war), but the potential prize was also very great. Ending the war two or three months earlier would almost certainly have saved hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of lives. (Not to mention the possibility of saving large swathes of Eastern Europe from occupation by the Soviets.) One simple fact demonstrates that success was far from impossible. XXX Corp had to advance 63 miles along an "impossible" road to reach Arnhem. Even with everything that went wrong, especially the failure of Gen. Gavin to take the Nijmegen bridge as a priority, XXX Corp managed to traverse 60 of those 63 "impossible" miles. Market Garden was a high risk/high reward operation which failed for a variety of reasons, but that doesn't necessarily mean it was a bad idea. War is a risky business. Who knew!? As always, however, victory has a thousand fathers - defeat is an orphan.

That you have to think of that joke about the pilot's wife in bed at the end. Bad bad girl. hehe

The musical score of this film sucked so bad it really took away from it.

I have this movie on DVD and it's a good. In the likelihood of an actual nuclear war it would be thousands of times worse than what the movie depicted. When this came on TV I was in second or third grade and my parents let me watch it.
