How to Install and Configure the MakerX DV6

  • In this video, I go through the entire process of upgrading an ESC in a DIY board. Of course, not every situation will be the same, but many of the things I do here can be seen in most DIY boards. This video focuses on upgrading to the MakerX DV6 ESC. This is a VESC based hardware 6 speed controller, that was provided to me graciously by MakerX. It's kind of a drop-in replacement for my old one, with some other necessary steps. This video is quite long, so I've included important timecodes to lots of different parts in the video.
    About halfway through, I finish doing all the steps to actually get the ESC into the board. At this point, you must program it. Programming VESC's can be pretty confusing, no matter which brand it is that makes it, Trampa with the official branded "VESC's" and other brands like MakerX with VESC-based ESC's. You can find the software downloads at the official vesc project website here: vesc-project.com/vesc_tool
    During the programming of a vesc, you can simply set up the board to run using only the auto-configuration tools if you wish and if you input all of the correct values. In this case, you would not need to do the additional customization steps that I did in this video. I should also mention that the process for setting up PPM remotes is a little bit different, but you can use the controller configuration wizard to help with that.
    Here's a link to the MakerX website where you can find the ESC: www.makerx-tech.com/products/...
    I intend to ride this esc for at least 100 miles before making the official review video. It may be some time since I have a bunch of stuff stacked up before that, but subscribe to catch the second part where express my experiences and the pros and cons.

    • @RBEMotion
      @RBEMotion  Před 2 lety

      Thanks! On this build I didn't really use anything to hold down the cables, just the rear part of the enclosure and the stiffness of the cables in their mesh. Previously though I have used "R" or "P" clamps made of nylon to help hold them in place.

    Did the DV6 fix your thermal throttling - or did you end up going for a heatsink?

    • @RBEMotion
      @RBEMotion  Před 2 lety +1

      I'm happy to report that the DV6 itself completely fixed my thermal throttle issues. Even on long rides on intense hills I never pass about 70C.
      If you check out my video on stress testing it, you'll see the results from doing repeated hill runs.

    Hi,
    @13:49, do I understand you downgrade the firmware from 5.1 to 3.62? why?

    • @RBEMotion
      @RBEMotion  Před 2 lety

      Well, at the time, 5.xx firmware was still pretty new, but my main reasoning was that I had 3.62 on my old Esc and wanted to do a direct comparison.
      I'm on 5.2 on my newer escs which is generally regarded as stable. However, you must set duty cycle current limit start to around 87%

  • @africans1968
    @africans1968 Před 3 lety +1

    Hi, why did you increase the motor current to 80A and braking - 80A?
    -80A will give you a very hard braking?
    Thanks!

    • @RBEMotion
      @RBEMotion  Před 3 lety +2

      Increasing the motor current to 80A gives excellent acceleration, which I love, and increasing the braking to -80 gives stronger low-speed braking.
      When we talk about braking, motor amps tend to dictate low-speed braking, and battery regen amps tend to dictate higher-speed braking.
      Let me know if that answers your question!

    Anyone experienced the gofoc dv6 frying mid ride? Happened to me twice on my Hoyt dadbod sent me flying off my board both times because of the sudden stop. First time it was fresh from Hoyt , took the board out for my first ride and it died after 8 miles and after having it replaced same thing happened again after 13 or so miles. I wasn’t even going fast both times around 15-16 mph

      @riskrunner-oy4ws Před 6 měsíci +1

      Working with Hoyt at the moment, they say that they are certain it is a bad batch of the makerX DV6
      Since this has happened twice now ( first time when I first got the board, second time after the esc was replaced )
      I suspect it may be something else that could be causing the esc to fry like it did
      How would one confirm if a motor is shorting?
