Are you Onewheel rider with a broken board? Maybe you bought a Onewheel GT and realized that if your board breaks, you're up a creek without a paddle. Maybe you have a Meepo Hurricane, and want to tinker, and have heard people mention that putting a VESC in it would do something.
What even is VESC? Is it an ESC? Is it firmware? Is it the answer to all of our problems? Well, maybe.
This video tries to answer some questions and clear some things up regarding a growing interest in certain niche PEV communities. Whether you're an eskate rider or have seen 30mph riding on a one wheeled board, this video hopes to be a primer for Vedder Electronic Speed Controllers, and how they may become beneficial for you.

Really comprehensive and articulate. 👍
It is wonderful to see content creators promoting a user-empowered hardware platform that will take eSkaters and Onewheelers into the future!
Another important point is that VESC type hardware can give a much greater performance than (say) a stock Future Motion Onewheel. The user can configure the current limits (to set and increase torque) and can configure their own top speed limits etc. 🙂
first, i think you gave me a cold with your sneeze, second i want to just bottle you up and whenever I have a question just release you into the world! Thank you for this wealth of information to the world. you sir are a scholar and a gentleman.
Love that you're open minded to this innovation! Ever since riding one, there's no going back ✌🏻
⚡ *Great to see a video in "Layman's terms" for people who have little to no experience with VESCs* ⚡
I genuinely think it is the future for OneWheel and lately it seems not far off. Eventually it could be for esk8 but right now I'm not sure. I hope and wish it would be for every PEV but it really depends on people and even companies gettin behind it as DIY is still a niche within minority.
I appreciate the quick summary/reviews on the Tenka, etc ⚡⚡
After converting my XR to use a VESC based controller, I've had a lot of people interested. I'll definitely be sending new folks this video.
What happens to the XR after this that's of benefit? I own an XR and would like see if I can upgrade it any way.
I was literally just thinking I wanted a video exactly like this! thank you for the introduction to VESC!
Great video Mario, thanks for trying your best to explain such a complex thing!
Your content is top notch! Thanks for the hard work you put in!
I wish you good fortune sir. VESC is desperately needed and if you pull it off, you'll have my money.
Best explanation so far. I’m referring this if anyone asks what it is from now on.
This is an excellent video!
Thank you sir. I appreciate that. 🙏
Awesome video, but I have to make the obvious request: would you make the hour long deep dive video as well XD
🙏thank you Mario! We appreciate you dropping knowledge.
Nicely-explained. Thank you. Makes a difference when you have a professional educator explain things
As always, great content. Thanks for all the info.
Thanks! That really helped me understand a bit more of the landscape of DIY electric motor control
The other comments say it all, but honestly Mario you're taking your shit to another level. Keep on keeping on
As always, great work Mario! I’ll be looking into vesc, never knew it was a thing lol
Thank you! Best of luck on the journey.
Uuugh, I want to get into this kind of thing so badly...... but I just don't have any kind of work space to do it 😭 (not the only reason, but definitely the major one).
I feel this. I too lack the space
Bruh..all you need is maybe a little living room floor space. Actually I just use my dining table most of the time. All of my necessary tools fit in a gallon ziploc bag.
Mines just money
Congrats on 10k subs!
Thank you!
Well explained, thanks for the tips on what not to buy :)
My little XS runs off a stripped down Flipsky 4.12 (50a). If I were to do it all again I’d opt for a newer unit since the older ones like this had no imu so I had to use the only serial pins for that.
My recommendation to others is don’t just assume you can just add everything you want to the lowest model. Get what you need built in if you can to free up your io pins for future expansion like lights.
Your XS board is definitely one of the coolest project builds I've ever seen. I'm jealous of it.
@@TheBoardGarage Thank you
Great video Mario
Another very informative video Mario. When are you dropping your review of the TFL enduro GT tire ? I ride mostly urban like you.
Hopefully in a week or so; there are 2 videos I'd like to have published within the next 10 days.
Interesting approach to a video like this. Personally I would have opted to skip over the technicalities and definitions of VESC, and instead focus on the features and eco-system: what it can do better than non-vesc controllers, what areas does it lack in, how good the balance app is compared to a regular onewheel, what the vesc-compatible accessory market looks like, etc.
Maybe we can get a followup video? :)
Since this was meant to be a primer, it felt more appropriate to stay away from the rollercoaster that is living within a VESC ecosystem. There's an entire build series coming that will cover all of the other items in more detail.
I had seen VESC mentioned in and around the community microcosms, and it occurred to me that most OW riders are unfamiliar.
So yes, several follow ups.
Cheers sir. 🙏
thanks for this, very well explained
Yeah you're not going to get a lot of traction right now but once vesc picks up in the community's minds in regards to XRs and how it will give you a far less expensive upgrade path but also give you a ride ahead of the GT by two generations with a good battery to power that torque and speed. 😉
Great video, Mario. Do you think that a VESC controller could be put into my MagWheel Trotter T1000? What other components (apart from the controller) do you think must be changed? Thanks in advance !!!!
It should be able to be wired it. You’d have to find the motor wires, and be able to wire in the 3 phase wires and the sensor wires. I have no idea what’s inside a Trotter, so you’d have to be able to do good soldering and wire crimping for the sensor connectors. And also be able to figure out the foot sensor situation.
Hey mario, so i just want to get some things straight. Im a rc hobbiest and we use ESCs all the time, its not untill i tried using a little rc car esc to power my electric skateboard motor, the thing just went up in flames😂. So is Vesc simply just a open source configurator that allows you to place safety features such as over current limiter on a esc (that supports Vesc) which would allow you to use it for more current demanding applications without fearing it to blow up. So essentially what i understood from your video is that Vesc itself isnt a special type of esc, its just a open source configurator that allows you to customise an esc that supports the software for tailored application.
Hey Mario… great Video 👍🏻 and you saved me a lot of money. I want to buy the cheap VESCs you mentioned they were trash. Which type of flipsky Vesc you have?! Thanks in advance
If you're building an eskate, it's probably best to just go with a LaCroix Stormcore. They're currently the most reliable, and have the best service if something fails in it.
Wanting to use one wheel motors, r of them for 4wheel buggy to run around my land. Should I use one vest for each wheel? Or are there products out there can multiple?
You would either need one VESC per motor, or 2 dual VESCs. And they'd have to be connected together via CAN bus. It's a bit easier to use 2 duals, I'd recommend a pair of Stormcores.
Thanks M, nice vid
Interesting to me as an rc flight hobbyist.
mario, I know you have a GT and a really nice vesc build, which is your go to board>?
I haven’t had to charge my GT since November, as I simply don’t ride it anymore. I just tried it again today, and it’s not for me anymore. I prefer the DIY VESC based board, it’s more my preference.
Great video! I hadn't seen this until now, and I happened to give my video the same name... Oops! 😆
Im not here to start shit but I have over 10+ unity's an well they all work an have had no issues.
I run 12S Lipo setups on mine.
did they release a vesc onewheels kit yet?!
I've read of a couple companies releasing things later this year. I'm hoping it works out, the new stuff looks cool, and something more people could be able to put together.
Yes,surfdado has a program that is almost exactlly onewheel, check his channel out
@@sneescampers yeah I agree there
Part of that safety margin is mechanical competence/ electrical competence.. those riding his latest vesc settings say it has a better feel than the gt, and he's still improving it as one could also do independently, assuming one is honest with one's self. Respectfully. :)
I’m interested in building a FOC onewheel from scratch but the parts are so hard to find. If anyone has some WTF growler rails for sale let me know.
Xr housings are ready just got to order 2 vesc for kdx supermoto e bike and onewheel
I don't know what that means...
@@TheBoardGarage I'm building a little focer ow and just got a almost done eletric motorcycle just needs brain and battery's
Oh, I see. Best of luck on the projects.
It appears in the video you have a Enduro from the defective mold that causes it to go out of round.
It doesn't seem particularly problematic on the bench, but I'll pay attention to it when it's on the board and riding. I'm sure TFL would replace it if it becomes an issue. Cheers sir, and thank you for pointing it out so I can keep an eye on it.
epic video
I'm having a feeling you're about to get a spike in traffic on your VESC videos. FFM4REAL
I'm ready for these to wreck the Onewheel market but I realize we aren't there YET. As much as I like the device, the company can die with their flawed tactics on repair. So can Telsa but that's for another day.
I do it on my one wheel if it was cheaper. I do anything to piss off future motion
Hey, you're completely missing probably the most important thing of the Vesc. Using a "normal" esk, you cannot do torque control, and torque control is exactly what you do when you're in a car and pushing the speeder with your foot. So this is the problem of esk where you can only do speed control. However, with a Vesc you can do very precise torque control - which is analog to being able to control the amount of fuel fed into a combustion engine. To be fair, this is a property for FOC, which is the type of control implemented by Vesc. So torque control is the BIG difference between esk and Vesc.
cooooool
so it's android for pev's
👍👍video
if you could press a button instead of tilting forward on a one wheel, coud be cool
Well, eskates generally work in a similar way.
@@TheBoardGarage There is one thing I dont understand, future motion could make the onewheel far more safe by just modifying the app so yu can set a speed alarm to avoid nose dive. I think the reason is future motion try to sell you a new board that beeps, I compare them to apple, really evil company who is in for $$$ and do not give a damn about users. Safety should really be the prime concern.
I see Richard stallman all over the second to last chapter
is anyone that you know using trampa vescs on OneWheel mabobbers...
Currently, no. They're not particularly suited for those applications.
Some do, many don't. Stormcores do, Trampas do I think, but their high voltage models are very large. The current best choice is one of the FOCers from Shaman.
Corporations locking electric vehicles for user usability/repairability needs to STOP asap! This is why i still have not bought anything from a brand name - its just not worth is as you cant do ANYTHING on these devices. However ive converted countless bicycles and electric mopeds using chinese kits. EV price gouging needs to end now.
Why are you Uploading so late man
it’s past your bedtime, mister
@@poastoast it actually was not
Vesc must burn, long live Future Motion
I think you have vesc and FM mixed up.
Unfortunately for you that this is impossible.
FFM... and, trolls
Sometimes they do burn. But it's easy to replace them by decent products from half a dozen manufacturers. Just hook up and resume riding!
