woodturning hollow form

  • this olive blank has burl in it so i wanted to really show that off, so decided to turn a hollow form to maintain as much of it as i could, i inserted a plug or cap to top it off as i had to make the opening larger than i wanted to, hollowing is challenging the wider the piece is, i have been woodturning since 2013, i love it as a creative outlet and the community of woodturners is great, there is lots of help and support out there available at the touch of a button. don't be intimidated or scared to ask questions no matter how basic, most of all be safe in your workshop, follow all safety rules and guidelines.
    use channels such as mine as inspiration and entertainment.
    it is recommended to get proper training with power tools to prevent accidents
    most of all remember to be creative and have fun
    safe turning..

    Very nice.... Gorgeous in fact. You do realize I suppose that the head stock slides along the bed. For the hollowing your back will love it.

      Thanks for watching, i do know that the headstock slides although it doesn’t swivel, not sure how sliding it would save my back but thanks

      Because with the tail stock removed, your toolrest on or near the end, you can stand at the and hollow without leaning over the bed

    Glue a contrasting veneer to the flat sides of the corner cutoffs and then glue them all together back to back to form a cross shape. That will give you a beautiful blank for a bottle stopper, ornament, or other small project.

    The Easy Wood tools have quite a large carbide tip. Don't you find them a bit fierce using them flat? Hard work and a bit nervy hollowing like this. Lovely result.

    • @WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning
      @WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning  Před 3 lety

      Hi Anthony
      The tips are pretty small yet can be fierce flat, you can tilt the tool slightly to sheer the cut, you need to cut bang on center of spindle height too, this helps a lot.

    Wow...Just a fantastic piece. I've been trying to do some hollow vessels but I always end up with a lot of vibration. Not sure how to avoid it. Would you have any tips? I'm also using the Easy wood tools but vibration scares the hell out of me.😂

    • @WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning
      @WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Daniel
      so easy wood have the mini, mid size and full size set of carbide hollowing tools, the larger the tool the less vibration, also you need to cut exactly on spindle center to reduce or eliminate catches, one more thing if you tilt the head of the tool slightly or up to 45 deg into the cut this will be like sheer scraping and be less catchy and reduce vibration.
      hope this helps you get back at it
      take care

    For not doing much hollowing, the piece turned out to be beautiful. Also not sure if you have enough room or not, but head stock will slide down and you can stand at the end and keep you hollowing tools on your hip. I have a 24" Lugana and I do that and it make it is much less tiresome and make the turning more fun. Keep up the good work and enjoy the new lath.

    Nice bowl! Here in South Africa we have "wild olive," a "common" tree growing just about everywhere. It is the wild form of the "meek olive" and the wood have the same properties, perhaps a little heavier with more figure. I have in my woodshed several large logs, one piece belonging to a tree of at least 1000 years old. The nicest of all wood to turn - smell, texture, finish etc. Unfortunately turned pieces darkens as it age.

      The inside is harder to do in that you can’t see what you are cutting, trying to reach the wall and maintain a constant thickness is key and that is why I ended up opening up the entry point, make sure to cut bang on center, too high won’t cut, too low really aggressive

    Great piece Rob. Olive wood is high on my wood wish list. Let me know when you have some stock.
    You have my email address.
