  • Hello freedivers! Thanks for joining me on my freediving journey. Today, I take you with me to Eilat, Israel, where I'm receiving coaching from Aharon Solomons for a month. The goals are to level up on my knowledge as a freediving instructor, learn new teaching methods to teach freediving concepts to new freedivers, and to get an assessment of my skills and technique after completing a freediving instructor internship several months ago. In this video, I go into two issues that may help you on your next depth training trip: troubleshooting and minimizing equalization issues and discussing potential difficulties in getting used to diving with a nose clip for the first time.
    If you want to see some of the equalization issues I had early on in my freediving journey, check out these videos:

      Do post some real stuff like actual freediving in the sea while shooting yourself and the surroundings with your selfie stick camera like how to freedive with only nose clips or maskless or without fins or simply PADI , mask removal , scuba ditch and don stuff !
      I mean the real action done by you and the narration in the background if anything you want to tell the viewers and not just the talk and the room !
      Afterall its an outdoor activity rather the indoors !
      For example , just look at the channel called :Black Mermaid ! She is also new but,...... doing some real action more .
      She is constantly putting real actions rather than just talking and vlogging in the room itself and people watch and comment on the actions ! I mean we all should be waiting eagerly for what next !? what next she going to do !?
      Show us the depths of beautiful sea and you in it enjoying yourself !
      Real hardcore freedivers including females actually most of the times dives maskless and without fins and I think you may already know that ! Nowadays female freedivers are earning more and more and breaking all new records in freediving world ! You can also do this but you have to be more bold !
      BTW ! I was the first few subscriber and its now more than a year and ...........you should already be making money by now doing siren or mermaid things, you know what I mean ! Things are taking too long !

    be careful with the noseclip Rachel. Frequent use results in a bigger nose. Look at mine if you don't believe me! ;-) Great video again keep it up!

    this video mentions congestion, nasal drip etc. Do you think this could be part of my issue IF in the past I've done scuba diving vasalva EQ past 130 feet without issue? When i am inverted it feels as though my entire head and throat are suddenly locked up. been trying for a week now after my class. have watched so many videos

      @thesailingsiren  Před 2 lety

      Hey Mark, thanks for the comment. It's hard to say without seeing you in person, but I wouldn't rule it out. If your head and throat are feeling locked up, I'd consider looking at building awareness for the position of your glottis and soft palate. If you're unconsciously tensing up your soft palate (possible feelings of being locked up), this may be the issue with your EQ. It's a completely different animal doing Valsalva with your body in a horizontal position vs going head down. Hope this makes sense!

      Hey Matt! First of all, thanks for being one of my first subscribers, and thanks for the suggestions! By the way, I already do make money for mermaid and siren things. I just have a limited amount of time to edit videos and prioritize providing useful information rather than the "look at me, I'm a mermaid with a selfie stick" videos. While I appreciate the value of having that kind of content, I'd like to save that for more collaborations with better editing than I can do with my basic camera set up and cell phone. I do have more of those types of videos coming out soon. For example, freediving in the Dead Sea, a sailing race from Canada to Hawaii later this year, and a tentative sailing and freediving trip that I'm in the process of planning in the Bahamas. More to come on that front. ;) I'll definitely check out Black Mermaid. Thanks for the tip, and please feel free to share more of your suggestions in the future!

      @@thesailingsiren Well ! Thanks but it looks like you may have to upgrade your camera steups and things to more compact and small settings like so you can use it by yourself much of the time rather than to depend on somebody else most of the time if you do !
      Travel vloggers usually have very light , small yet powerful camera like Gopro black series or Hero series but they also carry two or three battery packs with them coupled with 2 +2 TB external hard drives for storing and editing video files !

    I really don't know if this video is useful. I can't hold my breath long enough to go to a depth that will let me know whether I have equalisation issues. My pb in depth is still only the Aida 2 requirement 16m and I'm not going to try anything deeper as my contractions always start already halfway on my way DOWN, turning 3/4 of the dive into absolutely horrifying, nauseating self-torture. Freediving sucks and it's not for me...as it is more of a frustration which gives fear and anxiety, I'm leaving freediving to the extremists like you who desperately seem to want to be adventurous, and I want to be left alone about anything to do with breathhold diving as it only hurts. I'll unsubscribe. I also dislike your way of talking by the way. Too fast and too clinical...

    • @thesailingsiren
      @thesailingsiren  Před 4 lety +2

      Hey Jo! Sorry to hear that you're frustrated with your freediving up to this point. If you can't currently hold your breath to get to 16 m, it makes me wonder what you are doing for your breath hold training. I'd love to chat with you about it to see if there's something we can do to make breath holds more enjoyable! Can you swim 32 m horizontally in a pool on breath hold? Second, if you're getting contractions on the way down, it makes me think that you're pushing depth too quickly and aren't allowing yourself to get comfortable with a new depth before going deeper. I also get contractions on the way down when progressing in depth, but once I get 3-6 dives in at that depth, the contractions go away. I hope you don't give up on freediving. It's a beautiful sport, and while I'm currently focusing on techniques to progress my depth, I also spend just as much time diving shallow and taking pictures of the ocean life. :)

    • @jodecaesteker3971
      @jodecaesteker3971 Před 4 lety +1

      @@thesailingsiren 1) yes, I can swim 32m horizontally in a pool. And yes, mathematically 32 equals 2 times 16. But as much as you mean to encourage me and kind of try to prove to me that I can do -16m in depth, you of all people, as an instructor, should know that swimming horizontally in a pool for 32m where you can pop your head above the surface at ANY time is not at all the same as diving deep to -16m. The latter IS way harder. You also have to get down which requires extra force in comparison with a horizontal pool dive, even if your duckdive is perfect. And the pressure on the way up in deep diving is also making you have to work harder. So, 32m horizontal in a pool is way easier than -16m in depth. 2) and yes, 16m is deep for me, but it is only the first beginners level... 10m is already a real challenge. I freak out for deep dives and things are deep very soon for me. The most frustrating thing is: the problem is not equalization, it's the f#ck!ng breathhold. I HATE it when instructors (like Renee Blundon, a big show off in my opnion) casually state that anything less deep than 40m is not deep. What should we call dives to 20-35m then? Leisurely swimming? Or instructors casually stating that 50m dynamic is a simple warm up for them. This can all be true for them, but they simply don't take beginners into account. I would never ever take any courses from instructors like that. I need a LOT of confirmation by a LOT of successful experiences and I just don't have the time for that. Nor am I in the position to drop everything and do what you did: leave it all behind and go to the other side of the world to properly learn freediving. I have a family, a busy job that I do love and not enough time - or money to persue any freedive dream.

    • @thesailingsiren
      @thesailingsiren  Před 4 lety +1

      @@jodecaesteker3971 I completely understand what you're saying and can relate to not being able to drop what you're doing to travel and freedive. I'm currently back at home working my full time job to save up. Nobody sees that side of my life for the most part as it's too personal and I don't want to share it on the internet. My previous question about doing a 32 M DYN was a tool that helped me get over my fear of depth. Worked for me which is why I shared it, but that's totally fine if it doesn't work for you! For about 2 years, 5 meters was deep for me. While my breath hold wasn't the issue, equalization was. Rather than focusing on going deeper, I found joy in taking pictures of the fish and other ocean life near the surface. Yeah, it sucked to feel inadequate when your partner dives way deeper than you, but it's something that I had to shrug off.
      I think that part of being an instructor is developing a large arsenal of tools in which to teach concepts. I taught fire dancing for 10 years before switching to freediving, and it taught me a lot about the importance of encouraging and empowering people, teaching in incremental steps, and teaching them how to spin fire safely while also helping to keep them safe by anticipating potential problems.
      Everyone struggles with a different aspect of freediving, be it breath hold, getting past mental barriers, equalization, or something else. I guess why I wanted to encourage you to not give freediving up is because I find peace and quiet in hanging on a line on breath hold, be it at 5 meters or possibly deeper. I find joy in looking at ocean life. I like learning about myself. I love the athleticism in the sport and training to improve myself. I do it because I like creating art underwater. I find fulfillment and I feel alive! Even if freediving doesn't do that for you, I hope you find something in life that does, and I wish you the best!
