  • The FEA_curated THE ESSENTIAL TM KRISHNA IN CONCERT was dedicated to the memory of Gauri Lankesh. With this in mind TM Krishna performed a piece composed by another great icon of protest, poet and author Perumal Murugan in Raga Hamir Kalyani.
Krishna was accompanied by Akkarai Subhalakshmi on violin, Manoj Siva on mridangam and Anirudh Athreya on kanjira. Tanpura support was provided by Jayant Naidu and Sarang Phagre.

This is just too beautiful! I listen to this almost everyday. Hamir kalyani is one of my favorite ragams and T.M Krishna sir has beautifully brought the essence of this Raga in just 30 min. This honestly brought me tears. His knowledge is so powerful and inspires everyone. His music not only reaches the carnatic singers or the people in the carnatic field but also any commoner can feel the emotion of this ragam.
    Thank you for this 🙏😭

And not to mention Vijay Siva's befitting accompaniment on the Mrudangam.. Beautifully set composition. There is no T.M. Krishna there. There is only music. No to worry about protest and support. That is all human nature and prevailing here on the earth. Music is divine, a good rendition of raga reaches its destination where there is no room for protest. The meaning of the words have a divine meaning and it does not have the purported meaning the singer may have in mind before singing the songs. Once the singer is immersed in the song, there is one purpose and that is different

If you listen to a lot of Carnatic music or even Carnatic based movie songs you can clearly feel the Hindustani music and the presentation is very different. Even this ragam is not exact Kedar but that's the best we can relate to.

The lord's pic with his music and the cows in tango always had an importance to me because it conveys much more than what meets the eye. And ear, if you may. Krishna took it to the cows. If TMK has really been successful in imparting it to the dogs, as you mentioned, from the confines of the Sabhas, I for one, would be the happiest. They respond much better than many of the twin legged creatures. His music? We all know he excels in it when he needs to. So much for that. And to conclude- English, sometimes, is a lousy way to communicate an idea. I am sure the dogs would agree. I put this discussion to rest. You may respond, troll, abuse or insult and sign out if you so wish. I would appreciate all that with a 'Namaskaram, Periavar'

    Kedar. Only less meditative.

That's true of the average Carnatic rendition, as compared to its Hindustani equivalent, most of the time. There's a sense that a lot more goes on in each phrase, right from the moment the aalap sets off for us.

      Define meditative.
The hamir Kalyani of Carnatic music is NOT kedAra of Hindustani tradition, although it might have common origins with it. Listen to some compositions of hamir kalyani and you'll come to know that like dvijavanthi, it has been shaped into a strong carnatic raga even while retaining aspects of the Hindustani lakshanas. I have uploaded venkata shaila vihara rendered by same musician. Observe the rendering of the composition, which has strong carnatic phrases of hamir kalyani. czcams.com/video/OMj5Xib3tdc/video.html

Bhargav, Gaurav, good observation. Yes the rendition has a strong carnatic touch to it. TMK is a carnatic musician! And indeed same goes for Venkata saila vihara.

I liked it very much, thought you would like to hear it too.

@Shreyas K Don't even bother with such people sir. He/she will not change. We can only suffer such people because they are the loudest. I am pretty sure someone will see my surname and assume that I'm talking with a hidden agenda. I've stopped commenting below such statements just because of this reason. I can't even remember how many people have insulted me and my family for appreciating or defending TMK. I can't remember how many people said that me and my parents were 'rice bag converts' and that I shouldn't be listening to Carnatic music. I have given up completely. There is no hope. I sometime pop online like this on the comments section just to warn people not waste time arguing with these people.

@Shreyas K at least we still have open minded people like you :) And I can still enjoy carnatic music through CZcams!!! Just have to remind myself not to look at the comments section if it's a TMK video.
      Also....May God bless you :)
