And on a lighter note...“Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you'll feed him for a lifetime. Talk to a starving man about the fundamental frameworks of how to drive fishing performance at an hourly rate and you're probably a consultant.”

As always a lot of value in this video.
To go a step further concerning the relation client/ consultant and Mental Models/ Frameworks.
An extract from “Million Dollar Consulting: The Professional's Guide to Growing a Practice” from Alan Weiss :
“There is a myth in management that leaders are paid to take action . We idolize and elevate those who are “ action oriented. ” But no one is paid to take action. People are paid to achieve results”.
    Steps are:
    1) Idea/ insight/ concept (mental model)
    2) Action (frameworks)
    3) And… results especially if you are a consultant well paid 😉
    Thanks a lot ! 😊

Really enjoy your videos. I think rather than giving lots of really short examples it would be great if you chose a real life example of a business problem (ie a case study) and then explained how the process was applied and what outcomes it delivered. Thanks 🙏

A masterpiece! It's good that there's a girl in Canada (which is 6,200 km from England) who is telling me about frameworks, and to orient my thinking towards action instead of procrastination: my job is to take this valuable information and to apply it quickly - before I start overthinking it!

I’ve been frustrated with focus meetings I have been a part of lately. I blamed it the overconfidence of some of my peers and their “certain” opinions when speaking up in the group. Now, after your video, I am thinking maybe I should be focused on my uncertainty instead of others certainty.
I’m currently trying to get my head around thinking in systems, I think the addition of framework thinking would make for an interesting hybrid where the two schools of thought may compliment each other.

A recent framework that I thought I wouldn’t be able to apply was the RICE Scoring Method because I was preparing for an INTERNAL Product Manager position. I thought, ‘Well, Reach (R) is mainly about market size, and I will have nothing to do with that since it’s an Internal PM job.’ Then, I thought for a moment and realized, ‘Wait. It does apply. Reach can also mean how many departments will be affected by a new feature in the internal software.’ It’s a real example I experienced that highlights the importance of not limiting your thinking, especially when working with frameworks.

  • @issaqua

I think the idea of a "window of thinking" like the "window of tolerance" is great - not enough thinking is impulsivity/rashness, too much is procrastination/paralysis and "just right" is execution. What I disagree with is that "customers use thinking to procrastinate." In stable (esp. large) corporate environments, change is high risk with a large downside and low upside. Who'd take those odds, especially in a hostile/competitive environment? What they do is transfer the risk of failure across to consultants to minimize the blast radius of failure and leverage consultant credibility/articulation to break the status quo.

This reminds me of an anecdote (which may be real, I don't know) that I heard first in Thomas Frank's channel about the two groups doing clay vases. And the one that made the best vase was the group that started early and did more vases.
Just like you said in the beginning, we need some data to make some choice, but we may not know what data, we may not now how to get or even worse, maybe the only way to get the data is making the choice in the first place (and probably make a lot of mistakes along the way).

Great video Vicky. Real Q: Do you think that clients’ predisposition to overthink the problem/solution (procrastination vs action) could be caused because they are thinking that they will need to deal with the consequences of a bad decision down the road, while the consultant does not have that worry as most likely they will have moved to another assignment by then?

    • @VickyZhaoBEEAMP
      @VickyZhaoBEEAMP  Před 10 měsíci +6

I think the fear of consequences is misunderstood. Many corporate cultures assume something is either successful or not. But in reality, solving any important problem requires iteration. It’s a data and insight gathering process that won’t be black and white.
So the ideal assumption should be we have a hypothesis and let’s test it. If it works, great. If it doesn’t let’s see what we’ve missed.
If we lived in a perfect world, consultants don’t need to exist because the client team will feel comfortable coming up with a hypothesis and test something. Knowing things can move forward regardless of the outcome.
In reality, many cultures want to punt off responsibilities so consultants come in and introduce the first few steps. This way if things work, great the money paid off. If it doesn’t work, clients can blame someone, and still get the data necessary to go to the next step.
Overthinking won’t bring results! Eventually we need some data. Do whatever’s needed to get some real world data!

    • @uvideo100
      @uvideo100 Před 10 měsíci +1

Vicky, your videos are very insightful. I am a subscriber to your channel. This is perhaps my first comment at your channel.
The cost of experimentation may be a hurdle in moving forward to gather data. The client needs to first design the right experiment. Only a consultant expert in the client's field could be able to help the client design the experiment.
I don't think blaming the consultant would bode well in mature corporate cultures. This where the management team signed off on hiring the consultant, and later on approving the experiment.
Bottom line, a competent consultant (subject matter expert) could help with moving forward in the execution phase. Companies may not be stuck because they procrastinate, but because they lack subject matter expertise for which they don't require a full time employee, but a consultant.

0:59 thinking to procrastinate - biz owners - delay decision making due to lack of certainty
thinking to execute - consultants - making decisions in face of uncertainty
i still don't get why we don't act when we do have all the knowledge?
is it bcos the target /goal / outcome is not clearly define?
such that the many options appear to be equally good
that we suffer from analysis / decision-paralysis?
    maybe this is it?
with having so many options available ...
we fail to define for ourselves what our target is ...
so we fall for the first easy action / distraction
if we don't know what we stand for..
we will fall for anything ... (to paraphrase a quote)

Iam sad to hear, how incompetent alot of corporate people seem to be :/ delay costs money - rather do a bad decision quickly than thinking too long and doing nothing - is often better - because then you know next time or can steer differently afterwards - rather produce too many t-shirts than think too long about what is the right amount for too long - ofc always about intuition.
didnt expect people to think so much about simple things
No wonder i just jump the corporate ladder higher and higher xD because i think different, weird stuff. I still dont like consultants, never heard anything clever from them unlike some specialists like consultants for voice communication - we as employee learnt so much there, how to catch the customer at the right point, especially us men, we often forget about taking the person from the emotional point and such
