The sad truth is that 2NE1 were regularly and publicly called ugly by YG himself. This led to CL teaming up with Teddy to write the song Ugly. They not only wrote the song for themselves but for everyone who felt ugly. The song is a self empowerment song. CL later said that constantly being called ugly had a negative affect on all the members to varying degrees but it was Minzy, the youngest, who was still a teenager at the time who was affected the most. She suffered depression and even thought about taking her own life. She revealed this to Teddy who thankfully helped her overcome it.
This song is one of the reasons why 2NE1 was and still are so loved, respected and admired by Blackjacks, other idols and musicians and the general public. They were relatable and not afraid to address important issues. They were powerful, talented, their songs resonated with a lot of people, their charisma and stage presence remains unmatched to this day. 2NE1 forever remain the queens of kpop.

This song was in relation to the fact that the boss of YG entertainment called the girls UGLY all the time in 2ne1 tv he made a statement that they was ugly and need makeup .
Since their debut, 2NE1 has been called the UGLY GIRL GROUP. Just like how BIGBANG was called the UGLY BOY GROUP to ever debut in KPOP where everyone is expected to be perfect kens and barbies of the Korean music industry. So it makes sense that the girls would suffer insults like calling them ugly. CL suffered from it. Hell, even YG himself called them ugly. . . So CL wanted to write a song about this and she did with the help of TEDDY. The other girls of 2NE1 also got asked about their opinion regarding the matter and contributed to making the song.
That's why UGLY is a personal song to the girls.
Ironically though, despite being called ugly, 2NE1 became the epitome of KPOP Fashion together with BIGBANG.
FASHION WORLD meets KPOP because of these two groups.
Before being brand ambassadors of high-end fashion brands became a thing in KPOP, 2NE1 and BIGBANG were already rocking the fashion world.
Those luxury brands are already sponsoring them and the big bosses of those brands are making them their muses to create their fashion collections.

YG himself called them ugly without makeup on several occasions. even told them to never show their faces without makeup, cause they're ugly. these Queens wrote this song in response to YG's comments. BTW the Yoon is the lead singer of Winner, another YGE band.

as a non korean speaker, I know the lyrics is easily interpret as an insecure song...but like u said, I found this song oddly uplifting and the way 2ne1 sing it actually make me feel like "ok, maybe you are ugly, but so what....its not the end of the world, its not the most important thing in life, many things way more valuable than just appearance" and that for me more comforting than people said, you`re beautiful just the way you are.....cuz lets be real, beauty standard is exist either we agree or not....but 2ne1 make me realize, if those fool standard wont change, then let us make them not important anymore...

1. UGLY is a song that has become a power anthem for all of us that feel we don't measure up to society's version of beauty. But who gives an f what "society" thinks, right?!
2. You're absolutely 1000% right that true beauty comes from within.
3. Our Yoonie! He is the maknae leader of WINNER, aka the group "Trust and Listen" or the "Kings of Summer" because they always comeback with hit songs, usually in the summer. He also won King of the Masked Singer six times! He (and Daesung) are the "rockstar" singers of YG so it's a bit ironic that they're singing "I wanna be rockstar!". His first single with YG is a rock song called Wild and Young. He's well-known as one of the best singers in Korea.
4. The fandom for WINNER is called Inner Circle. Sorry for gushing, I'm still emotional about Mino, the main rapper, joining the military the other day. Hard to pick a fave Yoon song, but I'd go with Iyah which will definitely give you goosebumps. WINNER fave song is Color Ring or SoSo or Millions or...ya, I can't pick one.
5. You never know, you might still hear 2ne1 live. I was calmly watching CL at Coachella last year and all of the sudden it was a 2ne1 reunion, completely unannounced. I lost my voice I was screaming so loud!

2ne1 weren't known as a vocalist group but each of them are fantastic vocalists. I don't think they get enough recognition for that.
It's true they don't get enough recognition from international kpop stans bec the girl crush blueprint title is too strong & popular. Still, they actually won best vocal performance at MAMA & the general public acknowledges that they are live vocal performers.
So true, Minzy vocals matured so much and so fast. She should have had a solo album and it's yang's fault we missed out on it. Dara doesn't get credit for how important she was for the early and ongoing success of the group. YG is known for prioritizing talents and live vocals rather than beauty in the past. Though they are making use of the beauty aspect now. But the talent and live vocals are still there. That's why YG never falls short of the competition when it comes to popularity despite too many scandals or dark times thrown their way. Coz their foundation is made of pure talent which is basically needed in the music industry. Their image of having talented artists will never be erased. It's a trusted brand by the korean population that spreads over the international population.
That is Kang Seung Yoon from WINNER (their leader) singing with Daesung. They are another boy group from YG Entertainment. They sang this song to get back to those who kept bashing them for their appearance. It's like them saying, " yeah, I'm ugly but can you sing like me? Can you do what I can do?" Unlike other Entertainment companies, YG does not care much about appearances, as long you have that X factor and unparalleled talent they will launch and promote you. That's why YG's talents are all amazing artists.

Interestingly enough, Kang Seungyoon is the main vocalist and producer of WINNER. They're the "ugly ducklings" from the label since most of the songs they release are more fun, energetic songs unlike their labelmates who're more edgy. WINNER as a group started kind of like a ballad group then evolved into the summer kings that they are. They're known in korea as a" trust and listen" group

Korean beauty standards are a very absurd thing. Thank God in those days YG didn't give them much importance in the castings and we've been able to enjoy 2ne1 and Bigbang (I think YG don't follow the same rules anymore). It's very sad to see Daesung talk about it when he was barely a teenager and how he thanked the company for giving him the opportunity to debut despite being "ugly"

Well a fun fact about this song is, back during the 2nd gen kpop idols when looks were everything for mainly girl groups, 2ne1 was considered to be a group who didn’t have the conventional beauty and they were criticized by a lot of people including the ceo of YG back then who continued calling them ugly. haha! there's no redemption but it feels great for it to be just be out there. It's feels amazing to sing along with it, there's a liberating feeling because we've all felt it at some point in our lives.
The group that the current generation wouldn’t get to enjoy.
I believed the lyrics was referring to themselves in a certain way, like BigBang’s Loser.
When they debuted, 2NE1 wasn’t the prettiest group, like how the current groups are. But what made them stood out was their lyrical genius, music and oozing with charisma, like their brothers, Big Bang. Stage presence is on par with Kings. The older fans called them Queens of K-Pop.
To add on, majority of the girl groups debuted with cute themes etc. but 2NE1 went the hip hop, pop rock style. BlackPink also did the same. It’s a YG Family thing. Got to thank the producers too.
2ne1 is well known for their insane live performances. My fave performance is in the Seoul Olympic Stadium as a guest in Psy's concert.

like many have said, the other guy is kang seungyoon from winner. in addition to the comments below, he's grown up to be a really amazing vocalist since then. you can try to see his stages from when he was in king of mask singer: czcams.com/video/2l0HEgmwI-c/video.html. he has the ability to make you feel the emotions of the songs even if you don't understand the lyrics with the way he sings them. he also just won at immortal song last night. it's a popular tv show in korea where established artists compete with their take of a legendary singer's songs in front of him. it's been a while since he performed with his original rocker self (yg forbid didn't like him playing his guitar early on) with the power ballad he sang and hyped everyone up, including the original singer.
he's also a really good composer and producer. he is the main producer for his group. since you're an art director, you might want to have a look at the mv of their song ' soso', which is a departure from their usual summer songs and is also one of the most artistic music videos in kpop imo. a personal favorite of mine is 'the door', with mino, the rapper of his group. it's part of the ost of the kdrama prison playbook, where he was also an actor.
Yang always called Minzy ugly, he's a POS for that. These girls are so important for the evolution of kpop, it's hard to adequately convey the impact they have had on society and the trajectory of Korean music. And yes, goosebumps every time.

I'm back to add FT Island, CNBLUE, and Apink, just for good measure, because I learned about them from the members who became very successful actors. All groups I can think of have members who branched out into acting, so if you keep watching kdramas after Extraordinary Attorney Woo then you will start recognizing people.
I personally love that this song doesn't really resolve, lyrically. Cause it's true and honest. Sometimes there is no "pretty" end. To me, this song is saying it's OK to sit in these feelings. It's human. It's normal. Sometimes to heal, you just have to go thru the ugly. The girls were ridiculed and called "ugly" by the industry the moment they made their debut because they didn't fit the crazy Korean beauty standards. Even Dara, someone who is considered as having the beauty standards, got hit with a ton of hate. People said she has a pretty face, but ugly body. They'd say other members were ugly but they were talented whereas Dara was pretty but had no talent. (Ofc all absurd and false) What I love about the group is they didn't try to change to fit the standard. Instead they took and ran with the word and instead empowered it. In almost everything they did, they intentionally turned up the antics, whether it's their music, fashion or videos. To prove that they didn't need to fit the standards. They were going to change it. This is why 2NE1 is considered to be one of the most important groups in the KPOP history.

I read comments and want to say that YG did one unnecessary comment about how girls look without make-up, but CL and Dara were in YGE for a long time, CL even called papa YG her main mentor till nowadays (in one of her recent interviews). Fans just find a victim to blame someone in 2NE1 disbandment, but papa YG was that person that voted to safe the group even as 3. Fans need to stop blaming him. All girls are apart from YGE now.
YG choose BIGBANG and 2NE1 to debut because he appreciate talent and hard work more than anything else.
