This is my 2nd version of this video. My friend Loren F. taught me the actual kick pattern for Becoming so I added it to the end of the vid. For people asking about my old modified version (easier for right-foot heavy players) it's: L rrLRL rrLRL rrLR.
Thanks for watching, this was a special video for me because of how much I loved Vinnie's playing so it's an honor to showcase my 22 favorite techniques.
Rest in peace, Vinnie. What a legend he was
Back in 94 'Becoming' was easily the sickest footwork in any metal song.
Still is
Still is x2
Meshuggas Bleed which is now concidered the ''footwork song'' is just a variation of Becoming.
So Vinnie is the real original.
it's still is now 2023
listen to “in the forest” by gojira too
Slaughtered is a double paradiddle between the kick and snare LRLRLL RLRLRR or KSKSKK SKSKSS.... I met him in 97 he just flat out told me what the pattern was after asking me to guess what rudiment it would be...………………..
Double paradiddle!
Metal_333 Paraparadiddle
Yah absolutely it is!
Losing Vinnie was a real punch to the gut. I felt like he was one of the more underrated drummers. To me, he was the John Bonham of double bass. Great videos. Wish I could mic my drums properly.
Call kat brooks.
pantera is the perfect metal band. every instrument and member was the best at what they did. to me the greatest metal band ever and what i feel like is the prime example of what a metal band should be.
“What’s up everyone, mike her from the art of guitar.”
Proceeds to give drum lessons 😂
Also R.I.P. Vinnie Paul
As long as GUITAR Center can sell drums I can pull this off. 😂😂😂
The-Art-of-Guitar yea... yea... you got me good point! 🤣
Not for nothing but no one goes to guitar center for drum lessons.
And it was explained like a guitar player would explain it.
The great thing is that I was able to recognize every song were those techniques were applied. Cheers from Chile man, we were all inspired by those guys in music and attitude.
can you tell me where the accented ride one is from? it’s sad that i can play it but don’t know what song it’s from
Great drum tutorial.
I truly miss Dime and Vinnie.
I was in shock for a day or 2 when Dime died.
I didn’t know him, but just a very important person in guitar world.
It's funny how this man can explain drum parts better than anyone on Drumeo and he's a guitar channel. Talk about irony lmao.
Your snare and kick sound dope.
Triggers
I didnt know you were this good at drumming
This is the best drum lesson for metal on youtube.
Great video. I'm not a drummer but its interesting facts and techniques. Do Dave Lombardo :)
Yeah ! We want to Lombardo !!
Are you really asking this guitar player to play Slayer?
As for Lombardo I can cover all but I think war ensemble.
South of heaven Seasons in the abyss hell awaits my favs.
Ahh really awesome to see this up there again my man! Vinnie was an amazing drummer indeed!
Nick menza Techniques
YESSS!
OMGGGG YESSSS
Cymbal Crosses 🤘🏻
Oh yeaaaah!
@James Black don't compare the two. They have such different styles that it makes no sense to.
I don't play drums or any instruments for that matter but I love watching videos like this. I really like your style of explaining these techniques. My brother does have a little drum set in the basement. I've tried playing and I know practice makes perfect but I feel like I just don't have the coordination or patients to get good. I might be doubting myself because I'm an excellent steering wheel drummer! Lol
Vince Paul, the brick wall! RIP 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Vinnie used a electric pad as well that added more sound options. Plus he really didn't use his floor tom as much he used his toms. Which the sizes of the toms are 13x13 and 14x14 and not many if any drummers used large toms which made big sounds when hit. Ive played alot of his drum parts and to me It's really a feel in the music much more then techniques.
Speaking of that 1-2 back and forth on the double bass... that's called a shuffle right? Thats what it makes me think of. Kind of like a horse galloping. I love it man. Such a legend right along side his brother. R.I.P. Dime and Vinnie😭
My top three favorite drummers Bill Ward,John Bonham, Vinnie Paul🤘
Clay Dawg Bill Ward?? 🤷♂️
vinnie wasnt only for drummers very influencial. his rythmwork was outstanding.
Rip Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell.
5 Minutes alone at 12:00 lol
One of my favorite songs to play on the drums
Damn I need a drum kit now
Zebes 26 need....
Me too dude
I was a huge Vinnie Paul / PANTERA fan back in the 90s! my original metal band (grimstone) est. 1993 used to cover Deciet (Most Regular People), Domination and Mouth for War...it took me literally weeks + weeks, to figure out what he was playing and how to play it...BEFORE the internet was even invented...much less CZcams! LOL! You're doing a great job young man...I was impressed as much with your humble and honest demeanor as your ability to pull these chops off and explain them in clear and understandable detail. Nicely done!
Vinnie Dime and just Pantera as a whole is just unmatched! Crazy simple, heavy and complex every song was. Forever metal!! Rest easy to the Brothers
Me at 00:30 : "I hope he covers the 'Becoming' groove."
Me at 15:15 : "BECOMIIIINNGGG!!!"
Play this at 0.25x speed, specifically from 6:00
Man, that felt like a Ketamine IV lolol.
Great job great video RIP vinny&dime \m/
Worthy tribute !
Hey mikeeee! Every day I look forward to seeing one of your vids come out! I swear 90% of my knowledge of guitar comes from you (The other 10% is from carl brown haha) A little request? Mebbe synysters gates guitar techniques or jimmy the rev sullivan drum techniques?? I know I've already asked this on another video but for you to do this would make my world! Thankyou
Please keep this vids going! Also I love how you make your drums sound similar to the drummer in which techniques you are teaching. Props!
I just mess with knobs till it works. :)
Nice one, Mike! Thank you!
Excellent tutorial. Very well done. On behalf of all of us, many thanks
one of the best rock/metal drummers of all time r.i.p
6:12 Hell Awaits intro
Gotta love it... surrounded by floor toms on a rack with upside down
sticks... the embodiment of thunder behind a drumset. My musical hero
R.I.P Vin.
Welcome to Art-of-Guitar Airlines, this

Tight! R.I.P VINNIE
Vinnie was my favorite drummer, loved his power and style! Loved his use of the ride.
Thank you for making this I will be rewinding and hitting play here for a long time. Contributions like yours keep Vinnie alive. Please keep teaching your great at it! Kidspiration
Rip VINNIE, you will be missed but never forgotten , on a cloud jamming with your brother once again!!
I know theres alot of Pantera fans so don't go off on me, but for that last one try playing on the double bass drum 2 16th notes then 4 32nd notes ending with the backbeat snare on the last note then 4 16th notes followed by 4 32nd motes backbeat on the last 32nd note.
So LR (LRLR)+S RLRL (RLRL)+S.
This should make it easier for you.
Hey man, I know you are affected by his death~so am I, a hero was lost but we will carry on his Legacy... 👍
Respect dude..
Awesome!! So much info packed into a short timeline!!
Excellent drum sound and playing and teaching
i think i read in a modern drummer that, Vinnine led with his left foot due to him playing tuba.. in a marching band. in marching band you start on your left foot as learning as a kit drummer, you start (down beat) on your right foot.
thank u for this!
Love the earthworks mic you got there on the hat! I got me some earthworks as well.
Thank a a lot man. That becoming double is insane. IMO only got bested by Bleed by meshugga. Although I admit there may be more.
Vinny Paul FTW
Vinnie would be proud
Note that these are Bonham triplets with the left foot stomping eighths on a kick. Try it on Good Times Bad Times!
How did I not see this
Holy hell man. This was a great drum lesson. Thank you so much dude.
That kick and snare sound sweet!
Much love... I miss them both very much.... greatest ever.... legends
RIP my idle Vinnie Paul and RIP dimebag Darell and I'm a drummer myself
Awesome! Kick drums sound great
Rest in Metal Vinnie Paul!!!! Loved Pantera and DamagePlan!!!

There's footage in 3 of Vinnie playing the double bass in "Becoming" where he's just wearing standard white socks.
Great video!

RIP vinnie Paul your really good playing on the drums ❤🤘🤘👍
Very cool. Vinnie was really awesome, and you’re no slouch, either. Hail.
Hi, great video!, Can you help me with the Art of Sheddring double bass Technique?.
Thanks in Advance.
This is why u should practice any rudiments u do with hands, u do with your feet
Awesome video loved it. Could you also make a drum techniques video on Mario Duplantier?
Sounding like Charlie Benante at 3:54!
To Get a hard sounding ride you have to play with your sticks upside down because that’s how he played with his sticks
Reast in peace vinnie your gone but not forgotten he gave so much to the world of metal legends never die !!!!
the shuffle kick was in psycho holiday right?
oh you mentioned it hehe sorry i paused to comment before you mentioned that it was from psycho holiday
Hi not related to the video but I'm wanting to buy a guitar to play nirvana songs which do you recommend
You can play any song with any guitar. However, if you want the style, go for a fender jaguar, jazzmaster or mustang :)
Becoming kick pattern is played at 9:45 just swap the snare hit for another kick. R(rest)RRLRLRRLRLRRLRLRR
I might be wrong , but those look like some Tama Rockstars, you’re playing there, in white! 🤔
Your bass drum has a good punchy, thud sound
Great tribute and I've learned a lot! (Do you reckon you could do a Mario DuPlantier (Gojira) tech vid? Would love to see your take on that!!)
Sean Kiney, maybe?
Man, I'm wondering about those TAMA Pedals....
I’d love to see you do a cover of Becoming, that bass drum part is so fucking tricky I’ve yet to hear someone do it justice. It usually sounds so muddy or over done if you catch my drift.
6:12 crush the industry
Dethklok!
GREATEST BRIAN MAY TECHNIQUES
Rip vinnie paul
