The late great, Vinnie Paul not only had a unique fill vocabulary but his heavy laid back groove changed the face of metal and hard rock drumming forever.
Even if you're not a fan of his band or this style of music, his mature musical approach to how the drums contribute to all aspects of a great song are undeniable. Solid, supportive grooves with appropriate and interesting fills is why Vinnie has and will continue to be an inspiration to so many drummers.
In this Lesson we dissect one of his many crushing fills and explore some easy ways to create our own unique version...which is how we create our own signature voice! Take the next step by seeing what you can come up with. I guarantee it will produce some very fulfilling results!
Don't settle. Don't compromise. Decide what kind of drummer you want to be and develop the Discipline to become that!

I’m lucky to be alive, keep up the good work man the world needs entertainment. We know how hard you guys work. It’s nice to come home at the end of the day and have something cool to watch people really appreciate it. We really appreciate it subscribe people show some love Clinton Dearborn from New Hampshire USA. ❤️❤️🥁🥁☮️☮️🌎🌎✌️✌️❤️❤️
That's amazing! Congrats Clinton. I'm beyond happy I can play a small part in helping you on your path. Keep Pressing!
Great video Jeff!! I did listen a lot of thrash and metal bands in the past but the more I listen to Pantera records the more I love the sound of Vinnie's drums , the tone the fills and energy coming from his style of playing!! Amazing video, thanks again👌😎👍
Thank you! Yes, Vinnie brought the heavy groove to metal. Dare I say he is the Bonham of metal.
That snare is huge!
Tama Copper Starphonic for the win!
Killer dude.
Thank you!
U described very well🤘🤘🤘🤘
Thank you! Glad it was helpful!
Beast mode!!!!!!
🦍 Paul!!
Best drum lessons on youtube bar none! Thanks for all of these Jeff.
Thank you and you’re quite welcome! 🙏🏻👍🏻
The kid sounds amazing. By the way I need to get better at tuning instead of half passing it thank you.
The Tama Bubingas thank you for your comment as do I!
Such a simple and easy to follow explanation. Much appreciated! Liked and subscribed! 😎
Thank you very much, Daniel! Appreciate the support. More lessons coming!
I saw pantera at festival hall here in Brisbane, Australia about 1998 with shihad supporting, one of the best concerts I’ve been to. I remember it like it was yesterday.
Awesome, Steve! I'm sure it was incredible!
Another great breakdown. As many times as I've played this, at 2:25, that's the first time I've drawn (and heard) a connecting line from this iconic fill to Kiss's Strutter intro.
Ah, that's a great connection! Even though this fill is based in triplets it's still the same coordination. One of my favorite concepts to teach/remind my students: Phrases of notes do not equal note values!!
Very enjoyable lesson thank you! I used to watch 2 YT teachers frequently but now I have to check 3 :D
Fantastic! I'm glad you're here G.L. More to come! 👍
When I was on drum line in highschool we had a Herta exercise called Pantera based on Mouth for War and another song where Vinnie did some Herta stuff. It was such a fun exercise man!!!
Great sound, great work... Thanks Jeff
Thank YOU!
damn I really thought that the fill was fucking impossible but it's easy now because you explained it so well! thanks man!!!
My pleasure, Paska! Exactly-most fills seem impossible until we slow it down and deconstruct it. This fill is a great example of that.
Incredible groove, power and feel from the almighty Vinnie Paul. He's my personal #1 drumming inspiration... any chance you had the chance to watch Pantera live Jeff? Thanks for this lesson as always and keep this series going1
Hey Curtis! Yes, Vinnie is/was a monster. And yes, I was fortunate enough to see them open for Skid Row supporting “Vulgar” and then a few years later supporting “Trendkill”. Both absolutely crushing shows. Did you get a chance to see him?
@@JeffBowders lucky you! Unfortunately I was not able to see them live. Too young!!! Interesting enough Pantera played they’re second last show in Vancouver in my home province of B.C on their Extreme Steel Tour… what a show that would have been!
P.s. The internet seems to be void of a video that accurately explains Pantera's Becoming's main beat, if it's:
R RLRL R, LRLR L, RLRL (I think it's this)
Or
R RLRLR L, LRLRL R, LRLRL
Muy bueno amigo 👍 felicitaciones!! Podrías enseñar el fill de angry again de megadeth ?
Thank you, Lisandro! That's great idea, I just may!
@@JeffBowders gracias amigo! Thanks a Lot!
I honestly think it's their somewhat weakest record, go figure! I love The Great Southern Trendkill, i think it's their best.
Anyway, killer lesson as usual, so many interesting fills and Vinnie Paul had many of them.
Trendkill is definitely more brutal with some amazing moments. Always thought Vulgar was their most cohesive. All the songs worked really well together. But I need to do a lesson on some of Vinnie's Trendkill fills and grooves - amazing!
Well then, why not do mouth for war? Its about 10 times more interesting. Even better, the illustrious foot pattern from Becoming.
The "Becoming" lesson is...coming. What fill(s) in "Mouth for War" would you like some help with?
@@JeffBowders Oh, sorry. I don't need help with any fills in "Mouth for War"' It's definitely an awesome grove. You mentioned Mouth for War in the video and I was like, hey that would be more interesting. It's just that Walk is the AC/DC of the Vinnie Paul catalog. Love the channel!
