One thing I can’t figure out. I have a Personal focus and I’ve set it to a schedule, for example the entire weekend other than the times it’s in Sleep focus. The problem I’m trying to solve is that when I get I’m my car, I have a “connect to CarPlay” automation that sets it to car focus mode. But when I disconnect from the car, I wanted it to automatically go back to Personal focus by default, or whatever the focus mode is set to based on my schedule. But it seems like it just turns off focus altogether, and doesn’t follow the schedule. So like the only automatic triggers for the schedule are when you actually cross the start time and end time, it doesn’t seem to default back to that if you’re in the middle of that timeframe.
It’s an amazing feature that becomes even more powerful when combined with shortcuts, for example if you usually forget to check on what grocery items to buy, you can add a grocery focus (if you have a grocery store that you always go to you can make the focus turn on once you go to it automatically), and using shortcuts you can make your phone send a “what should I buy from the grocery?”message to your roommate/partner or family member automatically once the focus is turned on.
People who often cry about lack of customization in iOS have no idea how powerful Shortcuts and Focus Modes are.

Not a thing anymore; they mostly claimed this, rightly so, before Apple introduced shortcuts and widgets
People who cry about device customization in general need to get a grip.
So you can change the theme? Shortcuts are really bad as i currently have some and everytime instead of opening the app directly it shows a black screen and then goes to the app that will always restart. Cuatomization is available but not that great on iphone.

I had a Samsung Galaxy S8+ and upgraded to an iPhone 15 pro Max, so you can imagine the challenge of adapting to a new system, to say nothing of the significant performance upgrade.. As a medically blind person I recently added a Train focus so that I can screen shot my ticket information (seat reservation) to be lock screen wallpaper so that when my booked passenger assistance asks me for that information (though they should have it to hand) I just have it to hand quickly for them. It saves me from opening my ticket and finding the information for them.

Do you plan a "how to" video on how you create such a video? I get you are using a teleprompter, but always wonder how you get the timing right so that your screen recording matches the flow and rhythm of your words so smoothly.
I use focus for a couple things, but two in particular is to have it turn on automatically using location at church or a recurring doctor’s appointment. Very helpful.

Yeah, I definitely need to continue utilizing this more. I have it set up currently for sleep mode and I love that feature. Changes my background my apps has my timer automatically turned on. It’s fantastic. I need to do this more.

Started using a work mode now, it certainly helps with distractions on both Laptop and iphone - I have it scheduled 9-12 2-5, so at least I can use my phone in "normal mode" during lunchtime, knowing that when I get back to work the phone flips back into work mode without any need for pressing buttons.. Really enjoying your tutorials here.

Another great, informational video! Thank you. I had gotten a bit frustrated with Focus mode, but this helped a lot. I have created one for my volunteer activities, and will probably create one for church, which is the primary time I only want notifications from a few certain people. Since I'm retired, I don't have to worry about work differences any more, but I will let my working friends know how easy it is.

Great tutorial
I never believed in such separation and I am not using modes and gestures on my Android phone either. I am working from home, why couldn't I check a few Facebook posts or messages sent from friends? If I don't want to get distracted from work, I just read them later. Your video is great and a lot of work, life is just not like that, in my opinion. Maybe I'd use it the other way around, shutting down work related stuff after work hours.
7:21 It’s applicable to all iPhones. Very helpful for Sleep Focus Modes as it lowers the brightness of the lock screen when checking the time.

I use focus mode daily. There's one thing I miss: since I use a dual SIM on my iPhone, I would appreciate it if incoming calls could be filtered based on the chosen SIM...

I have been using focus mode for a few years now. I love this feature! I have one for work, gaming, personal, and exercise. At my work, many colleagues also have an iPhone and never use the Focus feature. I think it's a shame because they did invest in other software to do stuff that Focus does for free. So I have been trying to convince them to use Focus instead because it also works better
I just thought of an idea for a future video of yours, that I think will be great for Mac users ... I always struggle with the differences between Stage manager / Mission Control / Opening apps in the top bar (when swiping 4 fingers up) and having apps open as "Windows" and so on.. I need both hands to quickly display the item . so I need an ability to take a picture. When I click Home Screen when creating a focus, I am not given the option to Create a New one. I just get to choose from 3, which are the three normal home screens I have when not using a focus. Any idea what's going on? Tried it repeatedly.
Is there any possibility to trigger the focus whenever an event of a specific calendar happens? That would be very useful.

Hi there. Very informative but I have a couple of questions. I'm on an iPhone14 Pro Max running 17.4.1. At 8:58 you show the you can 'Create a New Page' for the Home Page - I don't get this option ? Also I'm trying to set up a focus mode to enable when I leave a location (Home) but it only allows me to set up when I arrive. Is there a way to change this.? Trying to use a shortcut doesn't work as, irrespective if I set the shortcut to run automatically, I still get asked. Any solutions would be welcomed
Thanks for helping me to understand what the ‘focus’ thing is all about. Ive got to say that I’d be quite worried if I had to completely separate my life from my work, if I was ever in a situation where a friend couldn’t call me because I was at work I’d be seriously looking at working elsewhere.

I’m biased, but I agree with you.
I’ve only just recently unlocked the power of focus modes. So far my only complaint is that reminders and notes can’t be split between focus mode. Being able to have personal reminders and work reminders would be useful, I guess you can install a separate app JUST for one kind of reminder though.
Is there a way to turn on a focus mode by a calendar event? For example if I have a meeting scheduled in the calendar app, can that activate a “meetings” focus mode?

Yes whether it’s an e-sim or a china version with two sim slots.
I use it already but knew I'd learn a few more things from this. I work in the town centre so I don't make the work one auto enable because it would do it all the time but when I switch it on I tell it to turn off when I leave so when I go home it will switch off automatically. Also have the sleep one too because I have my watch on when I sleep and I'd hate to be interrupted all the time 🤣 Thanks for more great tips!
Also great to have my work apps on the Home Screen at work and nothing else, and I even have my phone all company branded with its Lock Screen and background for when I am work to remind me in case I forget to enable it. 🤣

I have my phone set up to turn on my work focus whenever I open the app "focus". Takes care of those distractions.

Can you group the contacts so you don’t have to select individual people to include or exclude calls from? So a group which has all your work people another for friends another for family and another for key people for argument sake?
I use the option to not silence favorite contacts (so only my close family, the schools, and my friendly neighbours can get through during work focus) mode. if i add a contact to favorites they get through without me tinkering the individual contacts in focus settings. I just checked: the groups that are in the contacts are automatically offered to choose from when allowing calls - so that is exactly what you want.
3:00 there are quite a few messenger apps, so the obvious question is - will it work with telegram or signal, etc?
One could instead of adding a widget, use an icon for each of your two foci. It uses the space of two icons instead of four. It would be nice for a shortcut to toggle on/off as well! Thank you for the great explanation!!!

I just figured out if you select "Turn" when creating the shortcut, you can change it to "Toggle"!

Since updated from 17.1 to 17.2 i think, work focus mode doesn’t work anymore…the 17.3.1 didn’t resolve it neither
4:34 Why does Apple define those apps by default? I usually delete them from the focus definition.
Can anyone help Every app or short cut I create in a focus mode adds that same app or short cut to my main home page even if I already have that app. Apple are unable to help.
I have sleep mode set up for every night a week but what I want is that if I’m out of an evening I want sleep mode not to come on so basically location based, anyone got any ideas?
I’m not sure of a better way, but if I need a certain mode outside of my schedule, I’ll just say, “Hey Siri, enable ‘personal focus,” or something like that

I think it is pretty dumb that apple does not give an option where you can have all your notifications. Like one way or the other you have to select if you want your notifications to be silences when the phone is locked or always, there is no toggle to simply turn off that particular feature. I would love to use focus modes after watching your video Tom but this is pretty dumb... I need a few people like my sick grandma to be able to call me anytime she needs me... so i cannot have my notifications silenced :(( btw great video and to the point explanation as always :)) I found last week's newsletter quite fascinating tho! I made a work focus mode screen and was so happy till I swiped left and the apps screen is still there showing all of my apps available. The whole idea is to make it hard to get to my non-work related apps. This feature is 100% useless for my needs
Also what’s the point in filtering apps when you literally have access to all of your apps in the App Library just near by
When I go into focus mode I don’t get an option to customise my Home Screen apps I just can change the background 😭👎🏾
I would like to see shortcut widgets be turned into 1x1s rather than 1x2s.
iPhone 15 Pro Max firmware 17.4.1 and Focus Mode Sleep has a bug that does not turn off the SILENT BELL once morning comes and Focus Mode Sleep turns OFF. 😢

Sure. But you could also have it just automatically do it whenever you get to the office. Then you don’t forget. I have it set to be silent for when I’m at the theater.

This is hyper super confusing feom Apple. Not the way you explain it- just the whole thing is a nightmare. Added apps now cant get back into adding more apps. Just about everything about focus is a complete mess🥴, creates pages of apps I don’t want unless in that focus mode, edit default screen and deletes widgets from other focus modes. A mess mate. They need to do a lot better than this for folk that have 50+ apps. Ok if you have a few apps but just not practical.
