  • Footy on gravel or mud? See the water-logged Rosebery Toorak Twos in the mud then the Queenstown Crows on the infamous gravel oval. Meet the authors of a new history, Gravel and Mud, an Anthology of Football in Western Tasmania, chatting on the boundary fence. Subscribe: ab.co/ABCAus-subscribe
Around 100 teams have come and gone from the mining towns of the west coast over 133 years. Often they came and went as quickly as the boom and bust towns they were established in. There were grounds near mountain tops at Gormanston and Williamsford and grounds that were rainforest swamps.
Many great players learnt the game on the Queenstown gravel including triple Brownlow medallist, Ian Stewart, Carlton’s Black Prince, Arthur Hodgson and current Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan, who reveals two fundamental lessons he learnt on the gravel oval.
