  • It’s the lure of gravel and a 3 and a half hour drive over the mountains that brings this episode to the Wild West Coast. Dave met some interesting characters including a stint at the local radio station. A resident historian provides the origin of the oval surface and Dave discovers just how tough local footballers are. The myth of the Queenstown gravel is further explored with Dave positioning himself high above the ground to get a perspective of what makes this oval and community so unique. West Ulverstone is todays opponent nearly not making the game with their bus breaking down at Penguin. Dave then heads to the canteen thoroughly interrogating the volunteers on the ingredients and cooking method for pasties.
This clip was produced in 2001 and appeared on the Tassie Football Show Football Life. It was one in a series of other "Football Culture" segments that were produced that year.
The show ran for 26 episodes throughout the winter of 2001 but had a short history as sadly those further up the decision making tree withdrew support.
Dave Sheehan moved to NZ and co producer Mark Stone back to Melbourne. Editor and cameraman Martin Duffy continued on living the dream covering grass roots football in Tasmania.
