Gary Neville reacts to the news that Gareth Southgate has resigned as England manager.
The news comes two days after England's Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.
"It's time for change, and for a new chapter," said Southgate.
The 53-year-old had been Three Lions boss for eight years and exits the role after a fourth major tournament in charge, saying playing and then managing his country "has been the honour of my life and meant everything to me".

He improved the structure at the FA, and that may be his crowning achievement, but he doesn't have the instincts required, at the highest level, to get us across the line, even with the best players in generations. He repeatedly came up short, when it came to selections, tactics, and in-game management. He turned an attacking squad into 11 Gareth Southgates, over-cautious, defensive, slow .... boring. That's just about acceptable if you win something, but losing, playing truly awful, unwatchable, football, will be my memory of his time in charge.
For all the "Gareth is a lovely person" stuff, he won nothing. I can't imagine Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Brazil, Argentina being happy with getting to a final and losing. Be careful what you wish for.
Southgate has the best record of any England manager in history, including Alf Ramsey. When England failed to qualify for the 1974 World Cup there were journalists who ran into the press room at Wembley shouting “Yes. We’ve got him”. That was because of the perception that he’d made an error taking Bobby Charlton off and it caused us to lose a 2-0 lead against West Germany in the heat of Mexico in 1970.
My point is that all managers have weaknesses and they only have short bursts of time with their players. So Southgate didn’t actually win a trophy; and I agree that his mind was often “keep what we hold”. But look carefully at what he DID achieve and have the decency to say “Thank you, Gareth”.

Doesn't say much for professional mangers if Southgate will be a hard act to follow. Gareth has done the right thing - his friends, the players may not like it but his position was untenable. Whoever does take on the role will have the unenviable task of working with the totally incompetent English FA and many worthy candidates for the role will not accept this. Real managers don't need to be loved, or even liked but they do command respect and a certain distance is essential because sometimes difficult decisions have to be made. The new man may elect to dismantle the tree hugging togetherness that he will inherit.

So, why did he comment and used this phrase "referee's decision on Kane's penalty (against Netherlands) was a disgrace"? Why did he even say before the final game that Kane would become the greatest English players in the history if he wins the Euro2024 Trophy? Now, I don't understand why Sky Sports even invited him on the show to talk about Gareth Southgate? Southgate has raised standards and expectations. Under Southgate England has gone deep into tournaments. There is now an expectation to win and het to finals. If the next man doesn't qualify or get out of the group-stage, people will be crying out for Southgate in a few years time! There will have to be pragmatism at times, not all teams can merely be turned over.
In terms of the new manager:
If English, has to be: Eddie Howe or Carsley.
If non-English: Klopp (though doubtful he would ever take, as he wants to relax, so no idea why his name is being constantly thrown into the mix).
No way Lampard, Rooney or Gerrard. They have poor man-management and inter-personal skills.
    No way: the Argentian Pochettino.

Gary neville is a twot, however i think Southgate deserves credit for his tenure, I for one am pleased with what he has achieved with England and have enjoyed seeing our team get to finals. These playes are normally idiots and unmanageable so I think he has done a way better job than we could ever know.

Quite. But for some reason they have a big following of fans who think they can manage an international football squad who will become World and European champions. Some of them might even be thinking they can become the first team since Brazil in '58 and '62 who can win back to back World Cups.

It's nice to see so many people now giving Southgate praise now he's left the job, 🤦‍♂
He's done well getting us to a few final against in the most bang average teams, ok, fair enough, he's a serial final looser after that though,
he's bottled doing the right thing at the right times and has walked away with nothing to remember by.

NOT. AT. ALL. Sorry Gary but gotta disagree vehemently here.
A bag of Stones have more tactics than Tr@shgate. Good Riddance to Pathetic RUBBISH.
If he were honest even to himself, he would have realised he was the absolute WRONG fit for these group of players & so were his tactics (or lack thereof). It was plain & crystal clear that he was HOLDING them Back with his Crap Stale Sideways & "Don't Lose" mentality instead of " Play to Win" as in Game Theory.
Finally England was rebuild if they hire A PROGRESSIVE coach who suits the Natural Attacking flair of current crop.
PS:I am a neutral NOT at ALL an England supporter but it was painful to watch 'em get wasted all these years despite having the easiest routes to potential glory.

U guys on t.v and online complicate things too much. England just haveto be more attacking. Yes the coaching is poor but, their are coaches who can change that. Eddie Howe is one. Southgate had a cauutious approach because the old english mentality is to be safe 1st. Let these younger managers have a go, who aint influenced by the old ways too much.
