Back in February 2021 I planned the location of every outlet, recessed light and fixture for our cottage renovation - really thinking about what we would need and how we would LIVE in our home. It’s finally time to see it all come together AND inch closer and closer to moving in!

Hi MaCenna! I don't know if you are doing this or have given it some thought, but it looks like you are going to be floating your sofa in your living room. I thought I would mention, since you are dealing with electricians right about now that you might want to put an outlet under the sofa for lamps. That is if you are going to have lamps there. That way you don't have to deal with wires running across your floors. Just an idea.
Great comment & do take into acct desk, sofas, chair lighting Etc even sofa tables behind sofa & corner chairs or chaises... 👍
Yes! I saw this i. The McGee home. They put an outlet in the floor for the table lamps. So cool!
The fact you’ve been “filming” this video since September is very impressive!
She is the queen of planning 🤯
Okay, but I actually learned so much about lighting and the warmth you want in each room during the sponsorship portion. Thank you for making even your sponsorships educational!
I was just thinking the same thing!
Years from now people are going to use this as design guide when they are building/ renovating their homes. Your attention to details is immaculate. Thanks for sharing this journey with us.. 😊
I highly recommend putting insulation between interior walls to help with sound carrying through the rooms. Especially in the bedrooms and bathrooms. Since you are at this phase it is perfect timing to do it. You can do the roll-in kind yourself before drywall. Doesn't have to be the blow in kind.
I totally agree. We built our house and didn't do that. You can hear people in the bathroom.🙄
Agree agree. You don't want to skip it.
@@jennifercline7843 😳
I never would have thought of that! Great point.
Oh that’s a great point!
You are so entertaining that I don't watch any tv reno shows anymore! You are the real deal!
My Dear Girl, You have grown so much in just this year. Love, love your drive and " I'm gonna figure this out" mentality. You have the support of your precious Romeo and family, so precious and I'm excited. I rejoice with you. Thank you for including us in the exciting, life event. Blessings, K ❤️
For the light switches, have you considered the old push buttons? They are appropriate for the period that the house was built and you can get beautiful brass plates for them.
Oh my that would be so cooooool
yes specially sine she keeping alot of the clharacter.
You were one of my inspirations for choosing to study interior design and I am now in my second year of study. I am loving the insight into a real renovation! Love from Ireland x
Good luck! Commercial interior designer here and I love it!! Totally one of the best choices I have ever made!
@@xolakieshanicole that's so cool! Did you study for this as well? Curious how to get into this myself.
@@fitlovebug well depending on what type of design. I went to a 4 year college to practice commercial interior design. But some just do a master class, or cert. for residential design. Good luck to you! Excited!
They make laser measuring devices so that you don’t have to mess around with the measuring tape! I use one called a disto, it’s a little expensive but it measures so exact. I think it would save you a lot of time!!
Great idea, thank you for sharing, I am going to check it out, too!
oooooooo thats amazing! i need one of those for sure!
Was going to suggest you use your laser level. Measure from the ground. Shoot the laser from the ground up to the ceiling. Climb the ladder. Mark the ceiling…
I have one I got from QVC. Has both manual & laser under $50
Yes! When we got new flooring I was so amazed to see one in use, it was so quick!
I suggest that you insulate the outlets and switch plates - it helps with drafts and general weather conditions in surprising ways. I did it with a kit I got free from the electric company. They come pre-cut and are so easy to install.
yup, there are thin foam pieces pre cut.
It helps unbelievably I've even just bought a roll of thin foam and stuffed that in the boxes
That’s very true!!
Just make sure you have as many outlets as you can everywhere for the more desirable lighting of the warm ambient lighting from lamps....I had recessed lighting put in everywhere...and I never use them...because they don’t give me the “feel” of what I want in my rooms....I use my table and floor lamps....and I wish I had more outlets....✌️💜💋
Get the electrician to put the outlets for Christmas lights on one switch so during the holidays you just flip one switch and they are all on. I’m sure you will have candles in the windows, right?
Every room needs three different types of light: task, ambient, and accent. And you align the light bulb type to each category.
That's clever! Saving that tip.
That definitely would have saved me from so much frustration in my house
We added dimmable switches in our renovation. Love that we can choose the level of light we want. Be careful of how you place your TV above the fireplace. Heat from the fireplace can damage your TV if placed too low. Also, sit in front of the fireplace where your furniture will be placed to determine if you like looking up at the TV all the time. It can be very uncomfortable for some people. Good luck!
Please don’t forget to add a connecting switch to any outlets (inside or out) that you plan to use for holiday lights and your Christmas trees. That way you can turn them off in the same way you would any light in that room. You never have to worry about unplugging anything before you go to sleep, just flip the switch. (if you want to get fancier you can ask about “smart switches” too ;)
Oooo girl!! Congrats on the awesome Home Depot sponsorship!!! 🥲❤️🙌🏼
Obsessed! Still absolutely adoring your content after becoming a die hard fan during vlogmas!! I never want this Reno series to be over!! Xx
thank you soooo much!!!!
Knowing MaCenna she´ll have tons more up her sleeve for this house even when it´s ´done´.
@@lindaraterink6451 I have all faith haha
There are still the cottages and then Fox Run! I'm obsessed too and MaCenna's 2 channels have really kept my spirits up the last couple of years. :D Thank you @XO, MaCenna for all of your hard work to share with us xx
Right I’m obsessed too! But I’ve been watching for a couple of years..
I love how detail oriented you are. I feel like the way that you've built your house is the only way to do it. I'm also really glad that your contracter has been (as far as we can tell) really hardworking and easy to work with. (With the exception of that plumber thing)
Anyways! Congratulations on how far you've come in a year! We're all so proud of you.
HAVE EVERYTHING ON DIMMER SWITCHES! Having the possibility of adjusting the mood of every room is absolutely essential for added flexibility in your designs. There is a lot of different models and I am sure that you can find something that fits your esthetic. Congrats on your hard work! This project is turning out absolutely beautiful and you have a lot of talent. I enjoy watching your videos every week. Lots of love XX
How do you not have over 1 million subscribers? Your content is so amazing!
I second indoor installation for soundproofing as well.
We did rocker switches because they have less crevices for dirt and dust to get embedded and are easier to wipe clean. I can’t wait to see how everything you’ve been working on comes together ❤️❤️❤️
I like the rocker switch also. My thought is the cottage is 110 years old. The other may be more period correct.
Good point ^
The first thing I noticed was how quiet it was in that shot. I’ve never thought it was loud before, but I certainly noticed the quiet. Yay!!
I love the outside lights that aren’t black. I hope you find somewhere to use them.
Couldn't she use those inside somewhere? They would look beautiful on either side of a wide cases opening or French doors! ❤ I do love how all this is turning out!! ❤
*cased opening
My dad is an electrician. I've helped him pull wire and have watched him install switches and lights pretty much my whole life. It is so detailed, and an art in itself sometimes. I love looking at all of the light fixtures at the hardware stores when I go with him.
I have some switches that glow so you can see them in the dark. Lots to think about
I've never been this early!!!! Hi Macenna!
One request MaCenna...could you do a time lapse of the renovation after your home is complete? Would love love love to see that!
Aannnd I'm commenting while watching but WOW I can't even wait til the next video.
I love these videos! I’ve been watching ever since you did that project swap with Drew. I can’t wait each Sunday to see how things are moving along. You are an inspiration! I’m nervous about doing the work I want to do in my own home. I’m widowed and a busy teacher so there never seems to be enough time, but I get more confident watching your videos! Love it!
Thank you for your service being a teacher! I don't think teachers get enough recognition, (both my parents, my brother & my sister were/are teachers!) so I want to say THANK YOU for all you do to teach our children! xo
I've been watching since then also. Thank you for what you do as a teacher, and I'm sorry for your loss.
Nobody has ever made me think about the look and brightness of my light bulbs 🤔 I think I need to go to Home Depot 💡
Doing the same thing !
It was honestly a revelation for me when I realized I could change the color of light in different rooms to create moods. My bedroom has a warm, soft spa vibe now and I sleep so much better!
Don’t forget under counter lighting in the kitchen.
I know about under cabinet lighting. How does under counter lighting work? I've never seen it.
@@amara560 There's diferent kinds. There's led strips, or sensor activated lights. You can also build them as if the cabinets were a ceiling and they are "built in" controlled by a switch.
@@elisadiaz5796 I think what you are trying to describe is still under cabinet lighting. Not under counter lighting. I don't see a need for the latter.
@@amara560 Oh, you are absolutely right, I misread it! I've seen under a counter lighting though, but it was an island, so it was a led strip. You power it from the plugs if it's already built.
I clapped my hands by the end of this video because I am so excited about how close it's getting, but then again, I agree with some other folks who commented that I don't want the reno series to end! But of course, there are going to be so many amazing decorating videos, and let's not forget about the guest cottages!! Ahhhh. Love it all so much!
Don't forget outlets in you closets! Great place to plug those vacs up, etc.
I’m waiting to watch you build cabinets from scratch. That will be very interesting. Everything is looking great!
You should definitely do smart switches and lights and have a home system in the wall someplace not many people see in like a low key place. With the thermostat if you have that too. Right now in this place in the renovation you’re options are endless
Wow I can’t believe how fast it feels the house has been built!
I have been watching renovation videos all day long waiting for MaCenna‘s video definitely the only ones that put a smile on my face , Ure energy is contagious, greetings from Germany 🇩🇪.😍😍😍
By the way, makes me so happy and proud to see my Mexican people putting in work throughout your videos.. they are building your house so beautiful 🙌👌
LOL sweetie, the fact that i sit through your sponsorship-advertisement means that i really love you haha
The planning abd detail of this video. Wow. So so impressive. Love you
Please put an eyeball light right above the mantle!! It’s such a good thing to have in order to highlight the fireplace!!!
The house is coming along great. I love, love, love the overall color scheme of the house. Timeless. Also this has nothing to do with the house, but black is your color, I loved the black sweater you wore in the California segment. Can't wait until the next video comes out.
Honestly, as an architecture student this is really really interesting! I wish you could've gotten footage during the foaming, but the clips from the electrical work were just as fascinating. 😍
I would get the rocker that is flush to the wall for things like kitchens and bathrooms. Then get dimmer switches for living room areas & bedrooms that you can set the mood in
Recess lighting should wash your walls. Creates the perfect lighting. Especially if you place them in dimmers. Many people center their lighting and they lose the beautiful wash of light coming down the walls.
LED bulbs are a great way to go. I used to work for a company that created and designed their own brand of led bulbs about 15 years ago. They were great but very pricey due to the fact we couldn't produce them in bulk since it was a small company. But our designs and parts helped bring the LED industry to where it is today.
Watching you taking on projects that even professional builders or remodeling experts would never share “how it’s done”.. is a breath of fresh air!
Being a recent widow after 50 years of having my best friend & love it’s hard to pick up that “you can do it yourself” motivation. We did everything together. But now it’s time to move on, torn between “old or new” homes. I know I can do some projects and even find the right trades to help me. However family says it’s too much for me.. I think & know differently! But it’s hard not having my hubby to help me make decisions. So I see loads of ideas, my love for vintage & the possibilities endless thru your videos. Thank you so much for being you.
PS: I live in California so you know how expensive it is here😳🤔😕
I sooo wish I was as thought out as you are. I am such an immediate gratification girl I tend to get things accomplished quickly, but then wish I had done things differently. Being this way costs me a lot of money because I am constantly upgrading or redoing things, ugh. At 57 years old I don't know if I will ever change, but I am working on it :)) Thank you, as always, for sharing your journey with us. You are incredibly inspiring! xoxo from Oregon 💕
We built our house 11 years ago and I switched out to LED bulbs all over the house 8 years ago. I have yet to need replacement bulbs for a burnt out bulb🤷🏻♀️👌
You’re such a Ray of Sunshine!
Thanks for the inspiration, great tips and hard work you poor into everyone who is watching.
I'm so excited and happy for you. I can literally see the vision you have for the house and it's going to be gorgeous.
Their excitement about the foam is so cute 😄😄♥️♥️
P.S. I just stocked up on eco smart bulbs & I absolutely love them! I am glad you are showcasing them because they really do live up to their hype & are worth every penny! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Your videos are never long enough! The house is looking so good! And yes, so much quieter with the insulation in!
Dimmer switches too! Plug in at the end of hallways in case you want a light there. Double switches at the front of a hallway and at the end, so you can turn off your lights easily. plug ins on porches, plug ins in utility room at waist high. Then phone or satellite connections you may need hard connections instead of wifi depends on your community.
Listen to the happy birds singing alongside a happy girl and her pride and joy. It’s magical.
You're so inspiring to me. Your organisation, proactivity, productivity and beautiful bubbly personality just lifts me up. I can't not wait to see this house come together!
Your enthusiasm is contagious. I get so excited for you and Romeo.
So excited for you and Romeo especially when you start the interior decor
OMG you should totally do a progression video of the house if you have taken photos throughout each change made. I'm so excited for you.
Lmao I love your mom! “We coulda done this!” Spray foam is so fun and super satisfying to do.
Your videos make me incredibly happy. Although im not doing anything home related, your energy and video content inspire me every week and to look up / have a more positive outlook 🖤
Maccenna your excitement and energy for all your videos is felt by all of us watching. We went through all of what you are experiencing seven years ago. Shopping and making decisions for your home is a very exciting experience . The outdoor black lights are beautiful, and just a little note, they fade over time from the hot sun bleaching them out. I repaint them often as I like the fresh black look. Look forward to your next video.
Remember that if you are going to put a TV on the wall ask for an outlet there so the cables can be hidden, also is a good idea to add a moder electrical outlet on the island so you can connect phone and kitchen appliances.
Absolutely love to see everything coming together. So excited to see more!
I am getting just as many ideas from the comments as well. Everyone has great suggestions that I am keeping in mind for my own home.
I am in awe of you - the amount knowledge you have accumulated in building this cottage is amazing and I am learning so much from you in every video up to now - thank you 🥰😍
Thank you so much for explaining the lighting situation. My head would spin any time I'd go to pick out bulbs: do I choose bright white? Warm? Soft white? You helped me understand when and where to use what, thank you!
My parent’s house was built in 1936. Electricity was not available on our little barrier island than. Electricity didn’t come in until the late 40s. There was little need then for outlets….one lamp in each room. Today everything gets plugged in.
I am so excited for all the projects getting finished to be able to move in soon. I am now wanting to change out all my light bulbs in my home.❤️❤️❤️ I have loved this entire series about the Cottage
Oh how excellent, finally getting the insulation done! I'm excited for you, it's so close now. I can't wait to see more, it's giving me so much inspiration for when I am ready to renovate my own house. Thanks for sharing your process with us!
MaCenna, how did you know I am working on adding more lighting to my kitchen. this is super helpful !!! will definitely be switching to ecosmart 🙌🏽 THANK YOU!
I’m excited and a little sad that this series is getting closer to the end, but looking forward how you put it all together 🥰
The house is looking so beautiful! Starting to see the vision come true!
Thank you for posting this!
We break ground in March on our future house and I feel so overwhelmed! Watching your videos not only gives me so many ideas as I love your decor style. But so many tips and tricks for once we are building! I never would have thought of the light switches until it’s was time either lol
I'm so excited for you!! I can't wait to see the dry wall up and starting to make the house your home. Living for this journey and love watching it.
I have been so obsessed with your videos you are killing the content game!! 💖💖
Excited to see the final look of this. 👍
It's coming along nicely :)
Just fyi - If you have a place for them - you can absolutely put the matching outside sconces inside the house; those coherent with the pendant lights.
"Switching things up," you're so clever 😄 I started the video thinking there was going to be a change in plans for the house but that was a great pun! Yay to seeing this kind of progress where you're getting so close to moving in!
I will be happy when you're able to move into your home. More thrift shopping with your mom is great
I can see the happiness and excitement you're feeling... I'm so happy for you.
Just seeing all of your lights and the vintage mirror you bought, the sideboard you purchased for the double sinks, this place is going to be crazy cute!!! So excited that the exterior is all painted!!! Yay!!!
Oh MaCenna!!! I have those same big outdoor lights you want beside your front door! Mine are on either side of our Garage, and are a bone color! I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE them!
Great progress thus far. Make sure you add blocking for your television and other heavy object you intend to hang on walls,
"I don't need any other struggles in the kitchen" Girl, SAME
Wow! I didn’t know they had lightbulbs like that! I just installed a really cute clear glass pendant light and I wanted to use LED and I thought I was stuck with the white bulb looking ones! Thank you so much!!!! Super excited to see your house coming together ❤️
these videos have been my absolute source of joy over the past year! Thank you for sharing this journey with us 😍
You definitely made the right choice by having professionals do the foam insulation. Foam insulation isn't hard, but if you don't know what you're doing, it can be very labor intensive and messy to trim it down to get the drywall on top of it. Professionals know how to do it properly so there's not gaps in the foam, nor do they overfill it and then have to trim.
If it's something you want to try, buy or build a shed and then practice spray foaming that first. It's not hard exactly, but it does take some practice to get the hang of it, and spray foaming a shed is a lot easier than a house.
I'm impressed. This is my favorite CZcams channel! I've been following from the beginning here in North Louisiana:)
I'm so excited. Been loving this whole process.
Are they still using dimmer switches? We put those in when we built our house years ago. Really nice opportunity for ease in adding ambiance. Also double / 3-way switches that operate the lights when you have more than one entry to the room. I’m sure you’ve thought this through, just some ideas or reminders that might help. Extra outlets in the bathroom!!!!!
I look forward every Sunday to your videos, always puts a smile on my face. Progress is coming along so quickly! Excited to see the drywall in and all the electrical done. I can see you wanting to spend the night in as soon as it’s ready 😊
What excitement is in the air! Insulation and what else, you and your Mom can get it done and you’ll move in any day!
I can so relate to the volume of details one needs to consider during construction.
15 years ago, I couldn't find outside fixtures I liked so I chose some super cheap ones (I think they were around $5) to buy time. I still have them in place! 🤭
I really like the rocker switches. When your hands are full it's easy to sort of lean into the switch to activate it.
Ooh, I'll bet you are so excited for moving in.
Wow it's getting closer to getting done..So excited for you..Can't wait to see it when you move in and all the diys, and see all your visions coming to life...❤️
I have been following your videos for years as a fellow DIYer but you have really inspired me to tackle renovation projects in my own house. You are a real motivator!!! Thank you!
Sooo exciting!!!..all the things u have bought for the cottage we r actually going to see it all in its place!! It’s going to b breathtaking..
Watching it all come together, we're excited with you as much as for you!
Love everything! In my 20x12 kitchen I have at least 6 recessed lights and 3 pendents. I really like those options I have. Plus I have dimmers and the lights are not bright white. I think with just 2 recessed lights especially so high up, you may have more shadows. Just my 2 cents for what it’s worth!! I’m cheering you on!!
I like the Bright White color temp from Home Depot for task lights in kitchen.
I am excited for you as well! Thanks for always in showing us completed dry walls!Looking forward as always to every steps you take in tackle each projects, in order to finish your 110 yrs old house!
