Amazing to think this was Gervais' first serious acting job. The subtlety and depth to Brent while being in-your-face awful is amazing.

I agree. The subtlety of his acting is excellent. When he begs for his job in the second season, his acting was that good I really felt for Brent despite the fact that he had to coming due to the way he behaved as boss. Felt like he deserved a second (or third or fourth) chance given the emotional depth delivered in that brief moment of self realisation of pleading and remorse.

@d I don't think the US one is inherently bad, it's just that they butchered the entire concept. The UK version is an expression of reality. A proper insight into office work, and it's somewhat realistic. The US version is more of an escapism of reality, shaping things up to be better than they really are, and choosing audience enjoyment over realism. I think the UK version is definitely better though, it just has a lot more depth to it and I find the depressing humour funnier than the US lighthearted humour. It just seems more real which makes it more entertaining to me.

And it tells such an honest tale about the torture of being a human being (at times). It's the human condition. But it's funny as hell too. Just not in an upbeat way. The amount of people arguing about which version of the office is better here is pretty crazy. They are just different shows, people need to stop comparing them. The UK office is a kind of grim comedy/drama, while the US office is a more upbeat comedy sitcom. I am not from the UK or US, and I enjoy both shows. They just aren’t comparable, as they are pretty much different genres. It pisses me off when people fight about it, thank you for coming to my ted talk.
