The thought is it will help educate the world as a whole, and one day generate enough revenue to pay for their education. Until then if you appreciate what you've learned in this video and the effort that went in to it, please SHARE THE VIDEO!

Me: "Laminar flow!"
HAhaahaha but he also teaches his kids about laminar flow which adds to the family relationship its so cute
Hehehehehe
Snatch Blocks : Allow me to introduce myself...
Why do kids make it harder to travel? I'd have thought they fit very easily into most suitcases with room to spare.
1. it costs more
2. harder to find accommodation for kids
3. need to plan a lot more food etc,
4. just nice to have some alone time...
you aren't very good at humour, are you Doggy?
@Dulux Doggy
You must be fun to talk to at parties.
hehe, no, i prefer to ignore other humans, rather be alone on my bike!!
Cost is the primary prohibitive factor.. punching air holes in your luggage all the time gets pretty expensive.

Destin Wilson Sandlin (born 1981) is an American engineer and science communicator widely known for his educational video series Smarter Every Day (SED), which his special talent also includes drinking water while diving.
While diving, the air you are breathing is cold and dry. After diving for 20+ minutes your mouth starts to dry out and it gets hard to swallow and equalize. I love diving in freshwater because it’s usually clearer, but you can also drink the water (in certain conditions). I almost freaked out once while I was dehydrated diving at 100 feet in salt water and there was nothing I could do about it. Drinking salt water makes it worse. But drinking fresh water helps a lot.
I'm learning from this guy more than i've ever learnt in my entire life, how he treats his family and cherish his wife, while enjoying his life is an example to all of us.
You're absolutely a gift to humans and humanity ! God bless you brother.
ABDOU RAYAN Want to Know his Secret ? He knows Jesus.
He met jesus as a child. He knows jesus quite well. I think Jesus went on to be a cleaner or a gardener, though. Not sure how that would help him be good.

The importance of having a strong family is criticised these days, so it was really refreshing to see a family who genuinely understands how important having a strong stable family is not just for happiness and fulfilment, but for raising great kids too.
I wish you guys all the best.
How good did that water taste? And how cold was it? My favorite drink is literally ice water.

Did anyone take a chest picture of themselves between the plates trying to hold them apart? I would in a heartbeat! It would be the ultimate tacky picture, better than trying to hold up the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
But the plates are already going apart :P You'd have to pull them together
yess they are separating... because i pushed them
ahabtheplant The plates are actually about 8km apart, you'd have to have some pretty long arms to achieve that!

Thank you Destin for being such an intentional person in your family and in life.
The clarity of that water was incredible. For a moment it looked as if it were on dry land. Another amazing video, and happy anniversary you two!!
i really wanna drink water whilst swimming in it aswell, that looked lovely for some reason?
It was completely tasteless.... in a good way.
SmarterEveryDay i remember when me and my family went to florida for a couple of weeks (we are from norway) and i remeber the water quality (bottled and tap water) really sucked compared to the water in norway, i was wondering if there was some particular reason for this?
cannot believed he replied to me, i'm very happy now
+SmarterEveryDay maybe you did not feel its taste due to coldness ....
It might be due to the geology. I believe that Florida has a lot of limestone which produces quite hard water which I think is not as pleasant as soft water.
Glad to see you got out of Silfra unscathed. There have been an alarmingly high rate of fatal diving accidents there. So i advise all people reading this who plan on diving there to be extra careful.
Also be careful at all times whe traveling in Iceland. Fatal accidents involving tourist are happening more frequently, especially car crashes because foreigners don't prepare for icelandic weather or icelandic driving culture.
Stay safe❤
p.s. yes, I'm a native. I know what I'm talking about.
UPDATE feb. 12th 2017: Another fatal diving accident happened today in Silfra. :( Stay safe!
"or icelandic driving culture."
How is the driving culture different and what makes it more dangerous?
what kind of fatal diving accidents had happened? just curious.
The White Piano Key Productions A lot of icelandic drivers are really aggresive and impatient. Also there is a increasing lack of road markings and traffic signs the more far away you are from towns.
icy and narrow mountain roads, lots of badly maintained gravel roads outside of the highway, strong winds and overall bad weather.
Enzo Giannotta here's an article about the most recents diving deaths totaliceland.com/death-toll-at-famous-iceland-dive-site-continues-to-mount/

Destin, I just had a little comment spree based on a very interesting chain of comments started by Sinule. I wanted to add that i love the tone of your channel i think it is a great thing you have built here. thank you for you energy and enthusiasm.
Visibility so good it's like you're just floating weightless above a space landscape...
This water is incredible, at 6:20 you cant even tell you're underwater
Your family is so sweet and I've watched the youngest one grow up since her birth, I feel like a part of it too. Thank you Destin for what you do.
Appreciate how much emphasis he puts on the importance of positive marital aspects. 👍🏻
Thats what having an open mind and being insightful leads to tbh, gotta love it
I feel like I am mentally trained to pee when im scuba diving but im sure that would go poorly in a drysuit. Did you have this thought?
Yes I had this though. An added complexity to this was how long it takes to get into the suit. It's always a good idea to pee right before you get into any type of special suit.
I have about 500 wetsuit dives and always need to pee. For my 2 dives at Silfra I used adult diapers, which work amazingly well. Very comfortable with no sensation of wetness. It takes a while to break the reflex and pee into a dry garment, but if you really gotta go...
That's a great solution! Never would have thought about that.
it's actually a reaction due to the mammalian dive reflex that makes you need to pee. personal drysuits sometimes have some...instruments that make it possible to pee.
it would stay in ur suit, some of it
Family goals. Thanks for the inspiration Destin.
I LOVED the message you had to share in this video, Destin! It's so refreshing to watch your videos and hear what you have to say! It means a lot to know that there are people like you out there who aren't afraid to share their beliefs, even at the cost of ridicule! Keep it up!

Dan Quist That must be a very nice view. :) I'd love to see the northern lights fill the sky. Oh my. :)
Ha! "puff daddy" was the best part of the video and there were a lot of good parts.
Dads untie.
I half expected Destin to be like "What's the most important relationship in the family?" and the kids are like "You and mom, duh," and then he's like "What would happen if we broke up?" "We wouldn't be a family anymore." "Yeah, about that..."
And instead, it was super cute and fun-looking. Nice.
Mephostopheles hahahaha u killed me bro. That'd be fuuuny
Yeah, that was pretty bs.
Newsflash Destin, it's normal for relationships to end.
Is a spot where the tectonic plates are tearing apart and separating really the best metaphor for a happy marriage? :D
Hey Destin, I was amazed by your kids' family values. You've done a great job of being a dad!! God bless you and your family.
the most important relationship in family is the one you have with your kids. There's no point in maintaining a relationship with your partner if it's a bad one, it's just suffering for everyone (I know it's not your case) but you can't "divorce" from your kids. They came to the world because it was your choice. Their lives depend on you.
woah dude, he was having a break from his kids..
My point is that it is a good idea to manage the relationship so it never gets bad in the first place.
If only it was ever that simple Destin.
SmarterEveryDay Yes, it is a good point. But sometimes it is bound to happen from the start though they don't know it. My parents are getting a divorce now but I'm kind of glad they are. Their relationship worked at the beginning but mostly because the bad stuff wasn't very "visible". They didn't let it "die out" or something like that, they just weren't the right people to be together.
Ciroluiro I just want to say that you can "divorce" your children, and many people do. Talking from experience here (my father disappeared when I was 8), but I totally get Destin's point, if the parents have a strong relationship (like they obviously do) it also benefits the children, i feel like the effort they put on themselves is also for the kids sake. Not saying someone can't be perfectly happy with just one parent of course, because I know I am!! But parenthood is hard, and having a strong foundation of support with each other probably helps with the struggle!
Drinking water while diving was definitely the highlight of the video, I'm adding this to my bucket list.
Thank you for reminding us about the Kiwi Crates, Destin. My nephew is far enough away that I don't get to see him much but I hope the tinker crate inspires him to grow. We're all overjoyed to see you have such a strong marriage. Happy anniversary.
Happy Anniversary Tara + Destin! Looks like a fascinating place to visit!

Very clever Destin. Telling the bad jokes in advance
I've met Destin while at Gullfoss in Iceland. Such a great guy! It was nice to meet him :)
Where did we meet? Were you the one coming down the stairs?
No, right before the waterfalls! You were on your way back from the falls :)
I hope you never stop making videos. Happy Anniversary!
This is one of the most positive channels in the entire YT... so nice someone brings such a good energy to this world...
Great video and an even better message.
Looking at the footage. The water is *really* shallow. Why did you scuba dive rather than snorkle?
It varied. The majority of the dive was around 40 ft. The deepest was around 90ft if I recall correctly.
Oh ok. Thanks for the info.
You managed to go to 90 ft at Silfra? With a shovel? ;) I think my max was 45. Also, I hope the folks from dive.is actually explained where the "continents" are, namely several kilometers apart at that point and not the two sides of the crack that you touch with your hands.
rich people, smh
happy anniversary Destine and Tara! your family rocks.
Beautiful family. Thank you, Destin (and Tara) for helping me get smarter every day.
That place at 2:20 is called Jökulsárlón (glacier-river-spring) and more than 75% of it has melted away since the early 1980's. The glaciers there will all be gone within a decade. (I'm from Iceland btw.)
That was mind-blowingly clear! There are two shots, where there are reeds laying flat over rocks (maybe algae, I'm not a botanist), and both times I thought it was grass. I thought, why has Destin cut back to dry land, that's a weird editing choice? Then felt really silly when the camera panned up to show scuba divers.
About 5:51 and 6:20 for reference
Those words at the beginning with the kids describe you amazingly. So kind and thoughtful
At around 4:56 that moment when the camera goes under water and you see it's so clear. wow. just wow. amazing and beautiful place to go diving. thanks for sharing your experience with us Destin love your vids.
Your family is adorable, and I wish you all the best. My family has had issues in the past, but you definitely serve as a role model to me, not only as a a home brew scientist, but as a person. Thanks for the laughs, and for all else you do!
Hey Destin, I love you videos and the hardwork you put into them!
Never thought I'd have a youtube idol at the age of 26. Thank you Destin.
@SmarterEveryDay, I've been waiting to see this video from you for a while. I saw you and your wife prepping to go diving on the same day that my fiance and I went diving at Silfra too. We were finishing up around the time that you were getting ready. Silfra is an amazing place but so so so so cold. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
The clarity of that water was truly insane. Glad you and your lady got to do that trip. BTW, your lady is beautiful, an excellent mother (judging by the clarity and well being of your children) and smart as a whip. You have a definite keeper.
You and your wife seem like a very cute couple. Very informative video. Thanks for making me smarter!

I am SOOO jealous of you right now! I really want to go diving at Silfra some day. It looks so epic!
Have you dived in the Cenotes in Mexico? That's my most spectecular diving experience. Very clear water as well, and going through the halocline (where the salt and fresh water meet) was awesome.
I dived in the cenotes in Mexico last winter. It was really cool. The different densities of the waters really made it look like you were flying over a lake in a big cave.
