Neil, I would be really interested if you could find someone that could do a similar comparison with the Egyptian goddess Neith. I have personally always been very drawn to both Artemis and Neith and in my own study have found a whole lot of similarities between the two as well as Mary. Excellent vid. btw! Very enlightening.
I write about the connection of Artemis and Neith in my book “She Who Hunts”. There is certainly Egyptian overlap to the worship of Artemis. Perhaps this is a good idea for a future ep 🤔🤔
Neith's identification with the Semitic Anat also ties into this. On the one hand she seems to be identified as a virgin huntress like the Greek Artemis but elsewhere she is the Mother of the Gods and Mistress of High Heaven like Mary as Mother of God and Queen of Heaven.

The Valentinians definitely did identify Mary with Sophia (Wisdom). Philo of Alexandria had earlier called Sophia the daughter of God but identified her with Logos (the Word), whom he regarded as God's firstborn son, but also as God Himself. Philo had a massive influence on the early Christians and it's not difficult to see how some of his ideas contributed to Christian beliefs about Mary and the Trinity.
What echoes from the depths of this story is the need (mostly ascribed to men) to have a godly mother figure. Mother Mary is a very grateful object for this need. Around the 13th centure CE here in the Low Countries sprung up a MM venerating story called Beatrice (Dutch: Beatrijs). It tells from a nun who, for reasons I cannot recall at this moment, falls from grace. She gets out of the convent, gets maried, has children. The husband leaves this family, she falls on hard times, and falls to prostitution in order to feed herself and her children. Finally, as she's at the end of her rope she returns to the monastery, hoping on forgiveness. She succeeds in sneaking in, prepared to see Mother Supetior the next morning. Then, at dawn, rising from her bed... it looks like she was never missed by her fellow nuns. All those years (7 in total) MM took her place! All is forgiven cause of this BEATIFIC miracle. So, the name, 7 years and a sexual element... et voila! Historic studies pointed out that this story, although it has older predesessors, was composed in a male monks monastery! Yep, boys always want a kind and nice mommy. But this shows how strong this Mother goddess, prferably VIRGIN, pristene, unblemished, Clean is! Beatrice is forgiven and cleansed the moment she is back within the convent walls. The power of the Virgin Mother.
Great survey of the development of early Mariology and its connections to, and displacement of, Artemis worship. Only addition I'd make is that Artemis' earthly doppelganger in Greek religion was Iphigenia, who is famously depicted as a betrothed virgin (to Achilles) whose marriage was never consummated. In some versions of Iphigenia's story, she was spared from death and taken up into the sky on a cloud, akin to the later traditions of Mary's assumption.

If I may, I 'd like to add that there was a first century CE statue of Artemis Ephesia where she was named the Potnia Kosmou (Mistress/Potentate of the Cosmos) now housed in the Archeological museum of Athens. On the front of her dress rows of satyrs and harpies cower in terrified obeisance while on either side is a seated angelic figure with a blissful smile and a large bee. The image is one of a soul (the bee) finding deliverance and peace through her. An allusion to Mary as Queen of Heaven being implored to pray for departed souls to find peace in Heaven comes to mind. It also makes me wonder (if there's anything historical about the Acts 20 story of Paul exorcising the demoniac and ensuing riot) that the silversmiths making their silver replicas of this brand new image of Artemis, the great exorcist, were particularly piqued that Paul's Jesus was more effective!? 😂 A slight correction on the black-faced Artemis Ephesia - her hands and face are cast in bronze which blackened with time.

Mary isn't patterned after Artemis. She's clearly patterned after Semele, the mother of Dionysus (who is, let us recall, both a God and the son of God, making Semele the mother of a God), right up to her assumption and coronation as queen of heaven.

I'm a convert to Christianity from atheism (although my view is being challenged) and for a while I was reluctant to take note of other religious world views apart from those I would study for faith reasons such as Judaism and Islam. I have always been interested in history and just recently I've been studying other religions. I've been currently speaking with Hindus and it's very interesting. Your videos are also interesting. So David Grusch testimony before Congress caught my eye. If there is life outside of our world then who or what are they? My mind is all over the place at the moment so I'll get to the point. I've experienced the paranormal, lived with it for years when I was younger, seen things that were non human or animalistic in nature something which was non physical, at least in appearance. Now let's say aliens exist, could the two be connected or are the two completely different entities? Also I still believe in an ultimate Creator God if you will. Although you don't have to call it God this could just be human terminology to describe something beyond existence. But I do believe that if aliens exist and despite how we got here whether it was by chance and evolution or whether we were placed here (by aliens or gods) as we are now or had our evolution studied, I still believe there has to be an origin of all life, not just life on earth but also extraterrestrial. If aliens exist then did they evolve or were they created? I'm not saying you should believe in the concept of the Christian God or Islamic God or any other gods, but I think it's unwise to say that something of that nature does not exist, when knowing just how complex the universe really is and more.

I feel like the church perverted the classical meaning of the virgin which in turn perverts the ideas surrounding it from then on. To me, it seems like the virgin refers to a young woman who has never had children who is newly "in bloom". So when the bible talks about virgin birth, they are referring to the first born birth of a young woman, not a woman who has never been touched by a man. Which is why there is a specific difference between immaculate conception and a virgin birth in their writing.

A human can have Divine attributes or be a siddha. I don't see any contradiction to a normal woman having a normal child that becomes or is even initally embodying Diving energy. But I'm Advaitayana Buddhist... so I gues that's a given. But that's how I think of Jesus or Artemis... I like her analogy of transmuting forms. But maybe some people get off track on that concept or it bothers them. Or like was mentioned, maybe there becomes too much overlap. There is an advantage to focus on one manifestation but the Divine has many forms. I think Mary as Mother associated with divinity goes back further. Mary is a bit of a later development. Earlier on in Christianity, the Sethian trinity, which is also the Pythagorean trinity, is Father-Mother-Child. Jesus as the Logos incarnate is Wisdom or Thought of God. Feminine. Jesus the man was a boy, but Jesus as God was a feminine aspect, the divine Mother in the godhead trinity. (Spirit, who goes forth from both the Father and Jesus is the Child in this Trinity, called self-born). This God nature of Jesus was split off into the two Mary's: Magdalene and the Virgin in christian symbology. The "twin" disciple may have actually been Mary Magdalene. The two Marys of the gospels were a revelation of who Jesus was, but as this was somewhat concealed in the stories, it got lost and the Artemis similarity took over in the minds of those not familiar enough with Christianity. "This is my son, in whom I am well pleased" speaks of the human man Jesus, now baptised and a student of God and good Israelite. The incarnated Divine had no need to be baptized. The approval statement was of Jesus as a man, not a statement of the position in the godhead of his Divinity. Philo of Alexandria had earlier called Sophia the daughter of God but identified her with Logos (the Word), whom he regarded as God's firstborn son, but also as God Himself. What echoes from the depths of this story is the need (mostly ascribed to men) to have a godly mother figure. Mother Mary is a very grateful object for this need. Around the 13th centure CE here in the Low Countries sprung up a MM venerating story called Beatrice (Dutch: Beatrijs). It tells from a nun who, for reasons I cannot recall at this moment, falls from grace. She gets out of the convent, gets maried, has children. The husband leaves this family, she falls on hard times, and falls to prostitution in order to feed herself and her children. Finally, as she's at the end of her rope she returns to the monastery, hoping on forgiveness. She succeeds in sneaking in, prepared to see Mother Supetior the next morning. Then, at dawn, rising from her bed... it looks like she was never missed by her fellow nuns. All those years (7 in total) MM took her place! All is forgiven cause of this BEATIFIC miracle.
So, the name, 7 years and a sexual element... et voila! Historic studies pointed out that this story, although it has older predesessors, was composed in a male monks monastery! Yep, boys always want a kind and nice mommy. But this shows how strong this Mother goddess, prferably VIRGIN, pristene, unblemished, Clean is! Beatrice is forgiven and cleansed the moment she is back within the convent walls. The power of the Virgin Mother.

Only addition I'd make is that Artemis' earthly doppelganger in Greek religion was Iphigenia, who is famously depicted as a betrothed virgin (to Achilles) whose marriage was never consummated. In some versions of Iphigenia's story, she was spared from death and taken up into the sky on a cloud, akin to the later traditions of Mary's assumption.

It's obvious that the ka has become the forbidden zone and we're living in a ba-only construction that misses a lot of necessary connections with how the individual perceives his/her life. I had experiences that nobody could explain and the result was a psychiatric label that didn't do me any good. Later, I found out that I have a Twin Sister Personality that can be explained, using the ka-ba-la above - it was impossible to be the real me in an over controlled situation, my nobody had to live her own life (apart from me). She even has her own name - Sofie Taes, but I remembered Sofie Vangenechten and it would take years before I could see the link (Tandarts -> Ts -> Taes). I had knowledge that I couldn't have studied or have heard from the highest ranked Masters because I lived an average life. If I may, I 'd like to add that there was a first century CE statue of Artemis Ephesia where she was named the Potnia Kosmou (Mistress/Potentate of the Cosmos) now housed in the Archeological museum of Athens. On the front of her dress rows of satyrs and harpies cower in terrified obeisance while on either side is a seated angelic figure with a blissful smile and a large bee. The image is one of a soul (the bee) finding deliverance and peace through her. An allusion to Mary as Queen of Heaven being implored to pray for departed souls to find peace in Heaven comes to mind. It also makes me wonder (if there's anything historical about the Acts 20 story of Paul exorcising the demoniac and ensuing riot) that the silversmiths making their silver replicas of this brand new image of Artemis, the great exorcist, were particularly piqued that Paul's Jesus was more effective!? 😂

I'm a convert to Christianity from atheism (although my view is being challenged) and for a while I was reluctant to take note of other religious world views apart from those I would study for faith reasons such as Judaism and Islam. I have always been interested in history and just recently I've been studying other religions. I've been currently speaking with Hindus and it's very interesting. Your videos are also interesting. So David Grusch testimony before Congress caught my eye. If there is life outside of our world then who or what are they? My mind is all over the place at the moment so I'll get to the point.
I've experienced the paranormal, lived with it for years when I was younger, seen things that were non human or animalistic in nature something which was non physical, at least in appearance. Now let's say aliens exist, could the two be connected or are the two completely different entities? Also I still believe in an ultimate Creator God if you will. Although you don't have to call it God this could just be human terminology to describe something beyond existence. But I do believe that if aliens exist and despite how we got here whether it was by chance and evolution or whether we were placed here (by aliens or gods) as we are now or had our evolution studied, I still believe there has to be an origin of all life, not just life on earth but also extraterrestrial. If aliens exist then did they evolve or were they created? I'm not saying you should believe in the concept of the Christian God or Islamic God or any other gods, but I think it's unwise to say that something of that nature does not exist, when knowing just how complex the universe really is and more.

I feel like the church perverted the classical meaning of the virgin which in turn perverts the ideas surrounding it from then on. To me, it seems like the virgin refers to a young woman who has never had children who is newly "in bloom". So when the bible talks about virgin birth, they are referring to the first born birth of a young woman, not a woman who has never been touched by a man. Which is why there is a specific difference between immaculate conception and a virgin birth in their writing.

I think Mary as Mother associated with divinity goes back further. Mary is a bit of a later development. Earlier on in Christianity, the Sethian trinity, which is also the Pythagorean trinity, is Father-Mother-Child. Jesus as the Logos incarnate is Wisdom or Thought of God. Feminine. Jesus the man was a boy, but Jesus as God was a feminine aspect, the divine Mother in the godhead trinity.
