- The White House has confirmed that Ukraine is using US cluster bombs against Russian forces in the country.
National Security Spokesman John Kirby said initial feedback suggested they were being used "effectively" on Russian defensive positions and operations.
Cluster bombs scatter multiple bomblets and are banned by more than 100 countries due to their threat to civilians.
The US agreed to supply them to boost Ukrainian ammunition supplies.

Ukraine, on the other hand, is clearly going to take what precautions they can since it's their own land and civilians at stake. Besides, the Ukrainian battlefields are already riddled with mines and such put down by Russia; Ukraine will need to do extensive de-mining operations after the war regardless of whether they use cluster bombs or not.

I would guess that the reasons include these bombs having a lower dud rate and not being powerful enough to destroy a Ukrainian tank or other machine that needs to cross the ground in order to liberate Ukrainian territory.
Every source i've seen talk about cluster munitions on minefields have said that the dispersion, payload of each bomblet and dud rate make them a poor choice for clearing minefields. I really worry if they're actually hoping to use them to clear minefields.

Most of these cluster munitions will be used to de-mine and to destroy those extensive trench networks which have become notoriously hard to break through during the offensive as the ruzzians have had months to prepare for these attacks. Couple that with the fact that ruzzia has been using these munitions indiscriminately and against civilians since the start of the invasion, I'd say its not an unnecessary escalation at all.

Questions: Maybe is a stupid idea but why don't we simply put a timer/distance sensor in those individual bomblets? Something in the lines of, after is separated from the main bomb, let's say 6 ft or 2 meters, a timer is activated and the ones that didn't explode, they would in let's say 1 hour.
