- Today we investigate the MDR vs the SCAR-H to decide which is the best of the best assault rifle for the 7.62x51 NATO calibre in Tarkov! The MDR is typically used by end game players as the best all around weapon because it has high ergo, decent recoil and full auto - but the SCAR-H which is still new-ish can achieve better recoil performance than the MDR.
However the real question is whether we can get both the performance of the SCAR, combined with the ADS and ergo speed of the MDR. In this video we break down 4 SCAR builds across 3 barrels to figure out what is the most optimal build for this gun.

i just use the FAL and press the magical semi-auto button that reduces recoil by about 300% and press the full auto button if i want a shotgun with bullets

You omitted arguably the MDR's biggest strength: it is very short. This makes the gun extremely versatile, allows for great CQB by pushing doorways effectively. The scar is extremely long, has lower ergo, and while it likely is better at mid range, it sucks at close range. Given the similar recoil, the more versatile and ergonomic gun takes the W for me.
Yep the length is a big turn off for me, i rather have the MDR.
You can run short barrel scar, it honestly boils down to do you want slight better convergence (mdr) or slightly better camera recoil (scar)

And, for some reason, the overall recoil pattern and feel is in my opinion much better on both the 5.56 and 7.62x51 MDR's than any other guns in the game.
I think the ease of modding on the MDR platform makes it stand out over the SCAR, you simply need a foregrip, muzzle device and a sight of your choice.
also mdr is a shorter weapon being an bullpup so it's better indoors like dorms
Agree. Thats why i prefer the RFB and MDR.
I just cant be bothered to build meta mutants oder scars. Just slap on a foregrip, scope, insert mag, join raid, die, repeat. Easy as that 👍

2 big things you didn't consider are: length of the gun (MDR is so much better in CQB or when trying to look past trees etc).
And the size on screen. The Scar takes up so much more of your screen compared to MDR.
Those 2 are often more important than 1-5 points of ergo/recoil.

Glowing fde scar is a broken material on an LOD. A lot of the times new weapons or attachments are added, especially not blk ones, they have this problem. The bug is still there, encountered it yesterday with my teammate. Hopefully will be fixed in the next patch.
Can confirm this as well. Glows like a beacon on interchange in the underground garage area.

Anyone know when wipe is I haven’t seen anything so I assume no but idk. Ik they confirmed a wipe like 2 or 3 days ago or but I figured we woulda had events going on if it would be soon?

Love your videos sir. I've been away from the game for almost 2 yrs. Your stuff is really a big help. Love the chart at 4:40. Wish I knew how much each gun has changed. Used to love the vector but I hear its wildly inaccurate now. Love 7.62 weapons and can not believe the MDR is locked away. Used to be a lvl 2 gun.

I can confirm the FDE one still glows as of a couple days ago. I still like the MDR more than the SCAR, but the SCAR isn't too bad if you get it from the scav case or marked room. If I were spending money, I'd go for MDR any day, personally.
Forgot to mention, the SCAR is a nightmare while running down stairs. I have a VUDU/red dot combo on top of it and when you run down the stairs in Dome on Reserve, be prepared to not see a thing besides your gun.
Great Video! I did recently do another in-game search on finding my personal pick on end-game gun build. Ended up settling for the Mk47, but I had completely forgotten about the Mk-18. Might have to go back to the drawing table with it as a potential competitor!
Note about the glowing glitch, while I don't have any screenshots saved, I also noticed the tan 5.56 MDR glowing under dim lighting. Had a buddy running it as his main throughout midwipe, noticed it plenty on interchange specifically.

i love that glitch where the gun glows. i catch people all the time thinking they are hidden only to die because their gun gives their position away. hope they fix it but doubt they will seeing as the new lighthouse/wipe and arena are diverting programmers away.
That ergo vs recoil chart with all the different builds seems insanely useful, especially if someone maps out all the ergo frame timings for all the guns. This could get to ridiculous levels of optimization and budgeting!
Yessir. I Dont Scav after i hit flea market so finding cheap builds to run is crucial to me. I Have to min max every single game to ensure i have $ for PVP kits. I only wear level 5 armor and 4 helmets so it costs a lot more and i havent done a quest since i hit level 30 2 months ago. I just like to fight and take peoples gear. My favorite is taking something noticable off peoples guns but leaving the expensive stuff so they get confused on insurance returns. lmao. Wheres my stock??? WTF DUDE lmao
I just wanted to say I can confirm the glowing scar bug as of a couple days ago. I noticed it on a friends gun, and then they noticed it on mine.
While not an Assault Rifle, the M1A Sass build I'm running at 38 ergo / 50 recoil / 30 round mags absolutely slaps. Given that it has the option to run cheap 50 round mags, I would take it over any of the full auto variants any day. EDIT just saw the end of the video lol. Should've known you'd have good taste.

I haven't been able to touch a Mk-17 since having deployed with one overseas. I was issued a well-maintained rifle, at the time it had less than 1000 round through it, the SCAR-H had 3 malfunctions in the span of two mags. It looks cool as hell, it's the softest shooting .308/7.62x51 I've handled, but I would never trust my life to one, it's far too unreliable, even in training conditions, an actual combat zone, or worse yet, Tarkov-like situation, will exacerbate the SCAR-H's reliability issues to the point of the weapon being worth dogshit. I'd take an SKS over a POS SCAR.

The FDE SCAR still glows. In fact, there's a lot of Tan/FDE items in the game that glow since 12.12.
The SCAR has been my favorite weapon this wipe, with the SCAR L being basically a laser for 5.56 guns, and the SCAR H being one of the most versatile guns in the game, it works well with the CQC 13in barrel for Shoreline, the 16inch standard barrel for nearly everything, and the 20 inch barrel if you decide you want to snipe with the thing. It really is a fantastic rifle, and I love using it. I just wish it wasn't hard locked behind level 3 traders.

I've got a question for you since I saw you using scopes a lot in this one. To eye cup or not to eye cup? I started using eye cups on the PSO scopes with my medium range AK105 builds. There is a "felt" loss of vision with it but I notice it doesn't decrease the scope FOV, just hides the world around you. At first I resisted it, but then I noticed I didn't always look around the scope when zoomed in. I'm enjoying the increased ergo from eye cups on almost all my scopes now.

Feels like I can't see anything with the cup, and you don't "gain" anything from losing that extra peripheral and a bit in the scope. However I would love an option to "close one eye" so that you didn't have to take the picture in picture performance loss! If it did that, eyecups might be great haha
@@Gigabeef Thanks! that's weird in comparison to what i've seen. I've placed Chapstick vaguely in the location of the scope shadow on my screen and thought it wasn't different between the two options. I'll have to re-investigate.
Yea! I remembere the old CS 1.6/CSS days with the zoomed in screen with the crosshairs. That was part of my inspiration to take the plung and start runnign with the eye cup for the little extra ergo.

I am new this wipe and joined late but I have seen a scar (fde) glowing in dark interchange while my friend was using it.
god i miss being able to just run at people with a lazer beam accurate MDR fueled with enough stims to feel my blood coursing through my veins in factory that was the only reason i would play eft just RUN towards them and if voip was in eft back then i know for a fact i would have lost my hearing from all the screaming timmys
There is no-one that pokerfaces this well whilst playing eft. XD I get so absorbed by this game that I more often than not am my PMC.

The mdr can be the best rifle on paper, but the FAL will be the best rifle on my heart.
One thing to note about why players are using m62 over m61 even on labs where tier 6 armor is common - because the recoil addition or reduction stat of ammo is a percentage and not additive, that means that full auto weapons such as the MDR and scar with higher recoil numbers are affected much more than their lower recoil DMR counterparts.
+10% recoil compared to -5% recoil may not seem that much, but on a 90 recoil MDR it translates to 99 recoil vs. 85.5 recoil, a difference of 13.5 points. As opposed to a 40 recoil m1a where m61 yields a 44 recoil overall vs. m62's 38 recoil, a difference of 6 points. This is why you will rarely see people using m61 anymore UNLESS it is placed in a weapon with very low recoil.

scar has way lower recoil. I run a Scar-H loud with 76 recoil 40 ergo using M62 which brings it down to 71 recoil
suppressed can get to about 68 recoil using M62 brings it down to 63 recoil which is insane for full auto
I've been running the FDE Scar-H and the "glow in the dark" bug is still an issue as of last night. I'll make note to send a bug report when I run it again.
Can confirm that all tan scars do glow after about 20m and above in distance.
I like the Scar H very much in terms of shooting behavior. However, the gun is so gigantic on screen that I feel like I'm wearing blinders on the right side when playing the gun with a scope other than a Deltapoint. That's why I really don't like playing it. Of course, I also have similar problems with the other Scar variants.

i heard that the reason the scar glows is something about weapons with 10 mods on it, not sure what it means exactly because i see more than 10, but who knows, its just what i heard
Maybe this topic won't be important enough for a full video from you but I have noticed 3 general movements for switching scope magnifications, each with different strengths. There's the unrivaled T-5000's zero-movement zero-noise FEATURE (do not report this as a bug pls), the general half-circle of movement, and the left and right jitter that seems to only happen with SCAR's. Just something I wanted to throw out. Love the vids!
I feel like the SV-98 was like that for a long time too, not used it for a while so unsure if it's still the case - I remember the mosin having HUGE lag on the change scope button when I did Tarkov Shooter 2 wipes ago!

Encountered today on a scav run- found a MK16 SCAR-L FDE handguard on a bench, it glowed bright white until I got within abt 10ft of it

The glowing Scar is the tan Scar 16.
It shines bright white, even in daylight.
Edit: you don't see it yourself, but everyone else does.
I feel like if they ever add the larger magazine for the scar-h we would probably see a lot of people switching to it even though the ergo s would be horrible

Did they nerf the recoil of the 762 MDR? With the same setup my recoil sits at 99. I couldn't find any changes to the MDR in recent patchnotes either.

@@Gigabeef My bad! I just double checked and I was using the wrong muzzle device. Instead of the QDC 762 I was using the KAC QDC but with the same suppressor. Now my recoil is at 92 as well!

honestly i just play my MDR semi auto even in CQB, i have much better feel for it in semi. its my second best gun when it comes to pointfire, only topped by the mighty M1A.
I always use semi auto, only exception are smgs but those I use rarely

You must not point fire very often. RFB is an excellent early to mid wipe weapon. The lack of rails hurts for point fire. I’ve tried using the laser on top of my scope but it’s much too bulky.

First of all, 7.62 nato is not assault rifle but battlerifle. And second, why would you fire in in full auto? I know its a videogame but I heard everywhere that Tarkov aims for realism? No only in realism you would not use full auto on 5.56 you specialy would not use it on 7.62x51mm.
