- There are a lot of woodworkers and furniture makers out there that would like to learn how to weld and add working with steel to their arsenal (so I've heard). So while I was in Asheville, NC collaborating with Johnny Brooke from Crafted workshop on a Live Edge Coffee Table build (Linked Below), and welding up custom Hairpin Legs (also Linked) I took advantage of the opportunity to get an informative video for the second channel. Let me know if this series has legs!

Neither of us are welding experts by any means, and since most of our projects are woodworking based, we thought it would be helpful to share what we know and some of the common problems and growing pains we've faced on out own welding journeys.

Advice : Start with a stick welder. It's cheaper, give good results, and will make you learn welding. After few years you might change to TIG or MIG, or you might stick to stick welding ;) . A 160amps stick welder cost about 250$. And sticks are cheap.
Sounds like we actually know what we’re talking about! This turned out great dude, wish there was a video like this when I was getting into this.
MIG is Metal Inert Gas and considered a separate process than Flux Core. Both machines function the same but require different techniques (drag/push) and Flux Core leaves slag so you'll need a chipping hammer and it'll be a bit messier more like Stick.
Great video. Very helpful video for beginners. Thank you so much 4 everything. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend make on. Weld on.
Thanks for the video. Could you make separate video about the finishes, where you compare how they end up looking. Also for what kind of usage the are best for, outside, rain, snow etc?
Thank you for putting this video together. As a wood worker indimidated at getting into welding this was super helfpul. Thanks guys!
Never seen anything like this on the internet, it was awesome! Hope you guys get big
Thanks for all the basic info. This video answered a lot of my questions. Very helpful.
This is brilliant! I’m about to buy my first welder and have had no experience so far. Perfect for someone like me! Cheers guys!
I love this video. Keep making videos like these. I happened to stumble on this video and it was the perfect timing. I just purchased a multi-purpose welder as I am wanting to learn how to weld. And this video answered so many questions I had. Especially about wire sizes and what to get. Hope you do more of these videos in the future.
OH man! Thanks for this! One of my goals is to learn how to weld, but I was a little fearful because it seemed a little daunting to start. Thanks for the information! Hopefully 2018 will be the year I get started! Love both your channels!
I'm so mesmerized by all the hand movements in the description.
Dang guys, two thumbs up. You answered all the questions I had about getting into welding plus a whole lot more. I’m going to sit down next weekend and play through the whole thing again, taking meticulous notes. Thanks for a great intro to welding
This was fantastic guys, so good. Can't wait to get a welder. Have borrowed one in the past and welded as a kid. Plenty of times where some custom metal legs would really set a piece off.
THX!! finally a good video about getting started with welding. Fun to watch :)
Hey mike I have been looking into welding for a while now but didn’t know where to start now I do. I have been watching your videos for a long time now and you do a great job.
Awesome man! go for it!
Great, great video. My goal for 2018 is to start welding, this video is a huge help. Thanks!
I'm a woodworker almost exclusively, but I have a new in the box welder sitting in the garage. I think this inspired me to break it open this weekend.
Good Video, Nice edit. Smooth feel all the way through
Incredible vid guys thank you so much!
This is already the best channel on youtube
Great video guys. Very informative and non-intimidating for a newbie.
Thanks guys!!!
You guys are awesome!! Thank u so much!
Fantastic video! Thank you so much!
Great video. Thank you!
Really useful, good information.
Thanks! That was a nice intro into welding.
Awesome!!
THIS WAS SO HELPFUL! THANKS :)
Awesome video guys. I plan on having my brother in law, this summer, teach me how to weld. It's something I've wanted to do for @20 years. My ex-husband was a boilermaker but never wanted to take the time out to work with me. So now I WANT & CAN do anything I put my mind to.
I really enjoyed watching you two. You should make more videos together.
Right on! 👍
Thanks Douglas! hopefully we didn't butcher it too much :)
Great video! Thanks alot!
Nice one. Thanks.
Hey Mike, it be great if you could make a DIY on a marble top kitchen island! Keep up the great work! 👍🏼
Great videos gents
Very interesting info. A lot to process but very clear explanation
Awesome! Definitely a lot to cover
Best SOUND ever ....
Just the video I needed
Great video, I don't know if its natural progression or if you've all influenced me but I kind of wanted to start dabbling in metalwork. I'll likely scoop up that Chicago Electric with a 20% off coupon to see if I like it/can do it! Thanks Mike and Johnny!
Right on! I've been pretty happy with it so far. I think that definitely the natural progression of things.
Nice info
makes me want to get a welder!!!!
hello, the better machine will be fluxcore 125 from harbor freight, this is a much better welder than the black one you showed, for about 170dlls gives you a lot better ranges for welding
Could you please share a video on how to get started with sketchup, how to sign up and installing it
Great vid, I wishes ya’ll showed some demos
You gotta watch the project videos :) or chuckE2009 has some good tutorials too
"What wire should i buy?" Lmao 😂
Do u have any other video tutorial for welding.. i didnt see any welding here
Do either of you (or anyone in the comments) have any thoughts on getting the 125 Chicago that works with 110v?
Maybe good for something in your garage, but if don't know how to weld then it most likely won't be structurally sound and highly unlikely that it would pass a break test. I've been welding pipelines for over 20yrs and am still learning every day.
so i think i will start with mig welding with flux, so i don't need to have a gas tank i am assuming its better then stick welding arc welding i guess.
Hey Mike what’s your podcast called!?
I'd recommend not welding with just right angle magnets. Generally, the magnets should only be used for holding your material in place while you add clamps. The magnets aren't strong enough to stop the expansion and contraction of the steel from throwing your work out of square!
MIG = metal inert gas
A lot of people still know about this channel
Hi
There is actually 4 ways to weld! You forgot to mention old times gas welding.
These two are definitely the hottest two youtubers I'm subed to. Definitely not interested in welding atm.
when you wish you had chosen a video that had dumber people explaining. brain freeze.
All that talk and they didn't weld.
