  • The Island Golf Club, established in 1890, ranks as my favorite course to play near Dublin. The sea borders the club on three sides. The golf club has an engaging layout nestled between some of the highest sand dunes along the east coast of Ireland. It is located just outside Dublin and is distinctly different from the other courses. It has large dunes and dramatic terrain. The opening hole welcomes golfers to the massive dunes. It is a tough test that will cause golfers to smile from ear to ear at hole-after-hole because the layout is engaging and so much fun. The Island’s No. 14, also has the narrowest fairway in Europe, which is challenging not only how narrow it is but also the penalties that flank it. The massive dunes and the challenging layout make this course unique and worth the white knuckle drive down the narrowest two-lane road. The course is not overrun with bunkers, but the rough can be thick, fairways are rippled, mounded, and pitched towards trouble with many greens protected with dangerous hammocks.
My research s found many references to the ruggedness of the course. The course is well maintained and has a rugged routing and terrain compared to other local links courses. While the dunes are enormous, the walk is relatively easy-going overall. The Island Golf Course ranks as my favorite course to play near Dublin and a must-play if starting a trip in Dublin. The Dublin Airport is just fifteen minutes away and the Dublin City Center within thirty minutes.

Think The Island is my favourite golf course in Ireland - 13 and 14 being just the best two of 18 fantastic holes. Our four had a great day there in a Dublin holiday and we also spent 8 days doing the West coast & Ring of Kerry. I'm told we should try to play Baltray someday and only one of the group has been to Donegal and raves about it.

Thanks for commenting. Everyone loves The Island it is either the biggest surprise, most underrated or people's favorite course. It was my favorite in Dublin area. Donegal was really good and the European Club about an hour outside of Dublin is very good also very tough.

Looks Incredible! Great Video! How would you compare The Island GC to The European GC should you have played it?

I think the European Club is one of the best in Ireland and The Island is my favorite near Dublin. The European is very difficult and feels different than other Ireland courses. The Island is beautiful, rough and rugged. The Island is more fun than challenging but far from a pushover this is just in comparison to the European Club. You can't go wrong either way. Both are favorites from this trip.

Late August Early September. 8 Days not a drop of rain and easy to manage breezes for the whole trip. I was very lucky
