      What's likely is that someone in the control room knows the rules and they tell the announcers what's going on. But I also wouldn't be surprised if the announcers themselves knew a good majority of these obscure rules.

      @charliebaker3230 Před 3 lety +26

      These announcers aren't just picked up off the streets. They do their homework, they know the game in and out. The amount of notes they take on every game is astounding, and knowing the past of all the players and all of the stats that they memorize. This job is much harder than it looks.

    • @charliebaker3230
      @charliebaker3230 Před 3 lety +14

      Also, the announcers are typically older, they've known the rule changes over time and the evolution of the game. They know their stuff, I highly doubt there is someone in a control room giving them instructions.

    The fair catch kick is one of my favorite rules in all of football and I genuinely hope we see more of them. They are extremely risky, but if you’re down by 1 with a few seconds left, why not try it and see? It’s probably got better odds than a Hail Mary, and is likely the best chance kickers have of breaking the field goal record

      It's just another reason why kickoffs in the final seconds are often squib kicks...no fair catch possible.

    • @SonnyBubba
      @SonnyBubba Před rokem +4

      The reason it’s almost never seen is because if you attempt a fair catch kick and miss, you’ve turned the ball over.
      A rule change is like to see: on a missed fair catch kick, you don’t turn the ball over, instead you lose ten yards but keep the ball.
      That’ll allow more attempts, but not a gratuitous attempt after every fair catch.

    • @justin9202
      @justin9202 Před rokem +2

      Isn't that not the case anymore? The rules were probably different when that clip is from, but nowadays if a punt is touched first by the kicking team, it's dead at the spot it's touched, and if a kickoff lands in the end zone, then it's automatically a touchback. The receiving team isn't required to down it. I don't think this could happen today.

The TE was actually eligible, so instead of blocking he ran upfield and caught a pass. It was a popular college play. The Pats ran the play three times that game, but it only worked on the 3rd attempt. Harbaugh then said after the game that nobody had ever seen that type of play before and demanded the rule be changed, lol.

      "the Patriots went with four linemen, while playing tight end Michael Hoomanawanui and running back Shane Vereen on the line next to them. This confused the Baltimore defense as to which players were eligible receivers - though they did announce it to officials as required - aiding the Patriots on a 9-play, 80-yard touchdown drive in which the team never faced a third down."
      They did this tactic of reporting ineligible receivers just before they lined up then lining up said receivers as if they were eligible leaving the Ravens little time to figure out who to cover. The NFL made this tactic illegal the next season because teams are too stupid to figure out who's ineligible or not (even though the refs told them each time who NOT to cover)

    This is easily my favorite highlight video. It is so interesting to see the most particular rules (or lack there of) exploited. Even if it doesn't make sense, there's nothing they can do while the game is in play. It's awesome.

    Do you guys remember that football comedy show from the 90's on Comedy Central called, "Offsides With Dom Irrera?" What I wouldn't give to find copies of THAT show today! It was 40-50 years of pro football footage, with each episode focusing on unique and interesting plays/events with funny commentary in the background.

    • @hezamachine
      @hezamachine Před 5 lety +2

      NFL Films did a video called NFL's Newest Follies (1995) that was hosted by Dom Irrera. Most of the things that was on Offsides is on that video. During the offseason they show it on NFL Network as filler with all the old Football Follies. Most of the old follies videos are on CZcams if you know the title.

    The most interesting one to me is that if there is something like 10 seconds left or more, you can tell all of your offensive players to hold to run off the clock because the game can end on offensive penalties. Even if the defenders get flagged, the offense can waive off the flags and the opposition never gets a play.

    On the Saints Rams touchdown at the end. Bailey saw the potential and kept watching the ball but if you look closely so did his partner, I think #88. As the ball was bouncing #88 was also watching it and as soon as his boy picked it up he escorted him down the field.

    I wish you would have showed more of the Ravens blatant holding on the Bengals on the non-punt safety. The whole point of that: a game (or half) cannot end on a defensive penalty, but can (and does) on an offensive penalty. All 10 Ravens (excluding punter obviously) were told to just tackle their man, blatant holding, WWF takedown stuff. It was genius.
