After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of TOPGUN graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”
Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

Succinctly summed up, and agree on all points. A genuinely superb cinematographic experience that runs the gamut of the emotional spectrum - laughter, excitement, love, loss, apprehension, relief, reconciliation, and triumph. A phenomenal spectacle that deserves all the praise it, along with its cast and crew, has/have received.

I'm 68 and worked on the the crew that built the first F18 Prototypes for Northrop in Hawthorne CA back in 1978. It was a great crew that had the best of the best back in those days. We all thought the aircraft would last 10 to 20 years, and here it is still flying over 4 decades since then!! And is still the best for what it is, and what it was built for. Haven't seen those guys for quite a while, but am sure they are still proud in their retirement too.

We were all so excited to sit in F1 ELEVENS there on base. However the buzz around the whole trip was that Amberley Air-base were getting ready for the delivery of the new F-18 HORNETS! They showed us kids pictures of the jet and like it was yesterday, my jaw dropped..!! WOW!!!

@@scottromero4004 Great to hear Scott!! Sounds like your Dad did really good!! I knew some of the guys in Palmdale that worked at plant 42. Grew up in Palmdale and this was back when they were all older than I was. I too went out to Edwards after the Hawthorne F-18 Prototypes were all completed. Northrop offered us all jobs in the new El Segundo Plant where they started regular production of the F-18 later, but Edwards offered a job on the B1-A Bomber Flight Test program that I couldn't refuse.
Got to work with those older guys out there back then and all I can say is if anyone did their work and also helped them too, they learned a lot. Was younger then too so could handle doing both. What was fun was hearing the old stories they would talk about before I was even born. haha!! Edwards was a completely different base back then too. Went back out there in the mid 2000's to see it, and of course all the guys from the 50's and 60's were gone and it just wasn't the same place anymore.

This movie is nostalgia for many of us who were young when the original Top Gun debuted in theaters in 1986. By this time Tom Cruise had already become a household name thanks to the box office success of Risky Business in 1983. But few of us ever thought, because of the precarious nature of Hollywood, that Tom would still be an A lister and box office phenomenon forty years later.
We were wrong. Tom's work ethic has become legendary and
he accepts nothing less than perfection from himself. While he's had some less than.memorable movies, most have been quite good. And Top Gun Maverick will likely be his crowning achievement. We also finally get to meet the mysterious Penny Benjamin, only mentioned in the original Top Gun!
    Semper Fi, Tom! 👍

August 1986, I Graduated from the Army Warrant Officer Rotary Wing Aviator Course at Fort Rucker AL, when Top Gun was released. Great time to be in the military with my Silver Wings & Appointment to WO1 during the 1980’s. Attending Military Flight School takes every bit self discipline & motivation the human body can deliver. Interesting note my Army Aviation career was mostly served at Dallas Naval Air Station. I retired from the USAR as a Senior Army Aviator when NAS Dallas was closed, ending decades of great military aviation.

I myself am 50 years old. I was 15 going on 16 when this movie came out. When I turn 17 I was going to enlist in the navy. I was very young and didn’t know a lot about West Point, the Air Force Academy. I just wanted to be a fighter pilot. I was working at Burger King at that time. I thought I was in love. I traded that for the Navy. Probably the biggest mistake or one of the many I made in this lifetime. 35 years later. I would most definitely be an admiral. Whether it be a one star, two star or even three. But I would’ve excelled. Some of the choices we make in our younger years affect us for the rest of our lives. I so wish I would’ve went in, in 1988. You can’t change the past, you cannot predict the future, the only thing you can do is live in the present. They call it the present because it’s a gift. I hope to the younger people out there that read this post. Go into the military! It will be a good learning experience, you will get to see the world, get paid for it and possibly even become a fighter pilot. Life is just a series of choices.

I was a blackhawk helicopter mechanic in West Germany when the original movie came out. I was on TDY with a group who was going to climb the Zugspitz. We set up base camp the first night, and went to town for dinner. There was a little movie theater there, and they were showing Top Gun. I went with a dozen soldiers to watch it with the Germans. It was in English with German subtitles. It was awesome!

I love the message of the first Top gun - deliver more than they expect from you, in their best interest - even if it goes against the rules and have fun along that route! As much as I can see from the Trailer - this film will top on that. Tom Cruise has created something special, emotional encouraging - in a world, where being modest and strictly following the rules seems to be the most successful way. When there's hard work to be done, they come back to the true original thinking people that don't care for career. At least that's my life experience after having seen Top Gun I back in the day.
