Social security is not an entitlement. American workers pay into it their whole working lives. It is not free money as Republicans would like the people to believe. The same is true for Medicare. Right now, the maximum earnings that people need to pay on are capped at $160,000 per year. Which means that people making over this amount do not pay into the system on all their earnings, yet they collect at retirement. This cap needs to be raised to at least $400,000 to ensure that the higher earners are paying their fair share. The revenue generated by everyone paying on all their earnings would more than support social security and Medicare going forward.
The cap should be at the highest level that you'd qualify for SS at retirement. Not capped at $0 if your income exceeds $160k.
@lynnrolaf7422 While this earnings cap has increased since its inception in 1937, it is nowhere close to a realistic dollar amount. Each employer pays a match of the same 6.2%, which is deducted from the employee. I'm sure this cap is congresses way if giving corporations another tax break. Usually, the highest paid employees are also the owners of the company. They are getting a break personally and as a corporation.

but the money we "send" to foreign entities tends to actually be spent in america, with us sending finished warfare products that we no longer use. we end up then building weapons locally to make up that equipment deficit.

Why does the US call SSI entitlement. You paid into it, it is yours. Up north here, the government has no access to our SS. It is held by non partisian investment board. Politicians have very little say in it other than to change the age (increased to 67 then next government put it back to 65). The amount collected by retirees include a cost of living adjustment each year,and they are based on your earnings contributions. But we also have Old Age Security. If your pension is below poverty level, the federal government OAS will top it up. Plus our medical costs are all covered once you're retired.

I know a guy who is doing that...gets paid with cash....54 yrs old...and has nothing to show for his earnings...he'll be on skid row when can no longer work.
You are free to do that if you want you just have to do it with all the money that you have left over after you have paid your SS tax! Anyone who is crying over having to pay into SS isn’t rich enough to actually save for retirement.. if you’re rich then the SS tax is no big deal.. if you are not rich enough to pay that tax without crying you are not rich enough to save for your retirement

Second, cuts to entitlements are absolutely possible. Almost two thirds of the people on food stamps are working age, able bodied people. T reinstated the work requirement for qualification. Since then B actively reversed the requirements implementation.
SS and Medicare are both like Twitter, you can fire the majority of the workers, and things would keep rollin' along, completely unchanged.

Social security is the only retirement plan that consistently underperforms the market average… and it’s not even close…

we don't base humanitarian support on whether it meets market quotas.
You both aren’t defending it very well. It grows at roughly 1% or so on average… market average is 6-7%… it doesn’t not work currently, and it should be fixed. People would be better off putting those funds in an IRA or 401k and it would at worst make double the money.
Short term and long term performance is abysmal for social security when compared to the market.

@@sebcw1204 if it can’t be improved it will end anyways… so it either needs to be fixed or ended. It’s not for humanitarian support. Its a pay in, get out a better return system that isn’t keeping up its end of the bargain. People would be better off putting that money in a simple savings account… that’s how bad social security is.
