    I’m 24 and I’ve been coming back and forth to this channel since I was in middle school. Started as a fan of your nerf content and found myself now all these years later following you through your journey not just as a filmmaker but your journey through growing up and sharing with us what that’s been like for you. Thanks for all the content you’ve created for us all these years.

      So true. I don't remember how I discovered Chris, but I didn't know him as the nerf guy. I knew him as the Deep Sheep guy. They had just announced season 2, so I watched all of season 1 in preparation. Then of course, watched all his old nerf videos, Deep Sheep plays, I can't even count how many times I've listened to the late nights, etc. His stuff has been a big part of my life for years now. It's amazing to see how far he's come!

    I’m actually graduating from film school with a writing for film/tv degree in 2 weeks so honestly this video was pretty helpful since most of my teachers haven’t gone over what I should do after I’ve gotten the paper lol. So thanks!

    I know so many people are saying this, but it’s true for me too-I used to watch all the CaCox97 Nerf videos as a kid, and this advice is coming to me at a perfect time in my life.
    I’m a writer/illustrator, but still in the field of film for sure. I did take scriptwriting classes in my multimedia graduate degree, so my foot stepped into the film school area of my academic Venn diagram for sure.
    Anyway, all this is just to say, “thank you.” Thank you for the solid advice and support. Words of encouragement are much needed for artists. It’s pretty cool that we ended up sticking to similar paths after all this time. It felt like catching up with an old friend.

      Thank you, I love reading comments like this. It’s only recently I’ve learned that the small passionate portion of my audience that has stuck by me through all my ups and downs as a (I detest this title lol) “Content Creator” are people who grew up with me and are likely experiencing their own challenges similar to myself. I feel I owe it to you guys to share the life advice I’ve earned over the years :)

    22 right now and have watched your channel since about 2011. After high school I went off to college for film classes and ended up dropping out after the first year. The timing of these videos is crazy because I would’ve been graduating right now if I had pursued my degree.

    I'm not specifically going for a Director career, though I am interested in what all goes into it for sure, I actually was inspired to dive into becoming an actor! It's never easy but those who truly push through will see progress. CONNECTIONS ARE KEY!

    Thanks for sharing this Chris. Was also wondering how your day to day life has been ever since you graduated and also during film school. I know you must’ve been busy considering you couldn’t upload as much, but whatever you did upload turned out to be amazing film pieces.

    Definitely got some good answers! Most the points you talked about are things ive been struggling with, especially with being discouraged and feeling like im in way over my head, but hopefully with this, i can figure out the next step correctly. Thank you so much!

  • @AutobotSonicTheTelltaleGamer

    I'm 26 and have followed your channel since the Nerf Gun days back in 2006. You were a HUGE inspiration for me among others for pursuing a career in film. I graduated college back in 2020 and have been working at the New York Film Assistant as a TA since 2021.
    It has been a LOT of effort trying to get jobs though, I have yet to actually properly get a job on a film set. This is a GREAT video to encourage me to be more proactive in being social. Your last tip of "not getting discouraged" hits VERY close to me. I've felt that way when many of my co-workers have been on film sets and are a few years younger than me. Thank you for encouraging me once again, and I'm hopeful that one day I'll be able to make my mark on this world. 😁👍🏻

    I'm 24, I grew up watching your Nerf and gaming videos with me and my neighborhood friends. I was obsessed with Nerf for a long time but grew out of it until everyone started ambushing each other in University with them and I went back home to get my arsenal 🤣. After taking 2 years out because of the pandemic, I'm now graduating with a master's in Engineering in September as my passion for engineering started with modding Nerf guns. It's funny to think how a toy took us both in two completely different and amazing directions. I hope you do well in the film industry, best of luck. 👍

    Thanks for making this video Chris. I believe that most of these rules can apply to the real world in whatever people pursue. Watching your videos from when I was young I thought I’d pursue film school but things changed after I graduated high school and now I’m pursuing a bachelor’s in Psychology, and honestly I’m very happy even if it’s stressful at times lol. The real world is tricky and a key to solving it is the relationships made in school

    • @ChristopherCoxFilm
      @ChristopherCoxFilm  Před 26 dny +2

      That's so interesting because Psychology would've been my major if I hadn't found film. A lot of my mental strength has formed through learning to understand human beings and how we think and feel.

    Great video! Just came across your channel today and just wanted to drop a positive comment. You seem like a class act - I wish great things on you and your career!
    In addition to what you said: Freelancing is great when it's consistent. Otherwise, it's a fancy word we use for being unemployed. So, be pleasant to work with and keep as many irons in the fire as possible to string it all together into full-time work... even if it all looks a little different. No shame in running a videography or photography hustle in between your PA gigs while you try to get your foot into a unionized department! (And pay your self-employment taxes...! 😂)

    • @ChristopherCoxFilm
      @ChristopherCoxFilm  Před 23 dny +2

      Thank you for sharing your advice! Film people need to stick together, especially the indie scene that may feel discouraged because of how messed up studios have been in recent years.

    Hey Chris, been a fan for years now and I am graduating film school in two weeks! Thank you for the advice as you are someone I look up to. I have one question, from seeing your work it’s obvious you are a confident director, writer, and editor. But if you are working on a project that isn’t your own, what role would you usually work as on set? Camera, sound, lighting, or none of the above? I’m curious because in my school there was no “focus” on one area. We all learned every aspect and some people were better at certain areas than others. Thank you

    • @ChristopherCoxFilm
      @ChristopherCoxFilm  Před 28 dny +2

      Great question! I’ve been an actor on most people’s sets, as well as an occasional grip or AC. I’ve also assisted with editing and writing big time. I think for most people, find a role that you enjoy and learn more about it. Unfortunately a lot of independent filmmakers write and direct their stuff. So it’s tough to get gigs for those in the indie film world, at least for my experiences.
