US Military FSR (First Strike Ration) 24-HOUR MRE Field Ration | Meal Ready To Eat Taste Test Review

  • The U.S. Military First Strike Ration, or FSR for short, is a meal kit designed to feed a soldier for a full 24 hour period. It essentially takes the place of 3 individual MREs, saving space and weight. The contents are easier to prepare and consume on-the-go than the standard MRE. This field ration is issued to, fast moving, combat troops in the early stages of an assault. The FSR provides about 2900 calories and truly is the most "Ready to Eat" Meal Ready to Eat.

    20 year Army career. Started with C-Rations and Field kitchens cooking fresh or B-Rations. Ended with 2d generation MRE and T-Rations. Unit size MRE style rations which only had to be heated-although you could eat them as is-eliminated Field kitchens. I never had 24 hour rations but believe depending on the situation I would spread the food over 24 hours. Dividing into 3 meals is certainly an option but if you’re on the move or high intensity operations, a breakfast of coffee, energy gel and apple cinnamon roll then a snack of an energy bar then a lunch and afternoon snack then a larger dinner with leftovers and maybe even a midnight snack would make sense.

    Meanwhile the French are sitting down to a ration of Beef Wellington, Roasted potatoes with a succulent sherry demi glacé sauce and chocolate croissant for desert. And the Mericans get a bag of gas station food. Lol

      First strike rations aren't for sitting down and enjoying. It's just a day's worth of calories broken up into small snack sizes to shove in your face and keep moving.
      Real MREs are more bulky, less calories, require a spoon to eat and time to heat up. I'm sure French MREs are much better than ours but FSRs are "gas station food" for a reason. You eat them on the move or during the "first strike" into an area.

    This ration looks good, but;
    Needs more coffee, sugar, & creamer.
    A heating element.
    Crackers & instant soup.
    All in all, this looks pretty good! 👏🏼😎

    When we were issue one 24 hours meant 24 hours. you got to stretch it out longer than 3 meals. 3 meals in a perfect world would be breakfast, lunch and dinner. 12 hours half a day. assuming you going to sleep 8 hours throughout the night. yea, right. We stretch it out the whole 24 hours before we were resupplied If we were resupplied. There been several times 24 turned into 48. Also on the go means on the go. a 24 hour patrol you moving. may get 1 maybe 1.5 hours sleep. you going to be fulling your body every few hours on the move by just choking down this shit. USMC 0311

    For the instant coffee we (Infantrymen) just pour the whole packet in our mouth, take a swig from the canteen, swish it around in the mouth then swallow, job done. You’d starve if you were given the first generation MRE’s from 1984, they were horrible, especially the dehydrated beef patty, tasted like wet cardboard.

    There are a lot of food "safe" coatings used for preservation and to add shine to candies and fruits. Typically beeswax or shellac are the go to for flavor neutrality. Given what you said about the oily flavor and it being like machine oil, I suspect in this case it's paraffin wax. Completely safe, but some people -- not all -- do detect an almost gasoline odor and flavor coming off it. Most people don't notice it, but those who do can be really offended by it.
    It's more durable over time compared to beeswax, and cheaper than lac... but heating and cooling cycles can make it break down releasing oils. The ones you had that it was more pronounced, were they also starting to clump together? If so that's a telltale of thermal breakdown. Paraffin coated foods really shouldn't be allowed to get over 75F.

    The FS ration is not bad. Some of the sandwiches aren't very pleasant. But I've wondered, would a single FRH be all that bad? Those sandwiches might be better. I get it being "on the go," but there's surely 10 minutes of downtime.

    • @kevinmoore2929
      @kevinmoore2929 Před 7 měsíci

      There are NO sandwiches, only wraps. You can get them at places like Cabela's in a four pack of you want to try them. Some folks tend to forget that FSRs get field stripped just as much as regular MREs. FSRs are supposed to be issued for the first 72 hrs of operations, time enough to get a field kitchen inserted and set up at the FOBs. I still have a problem with the number of drinks placed in operational rations(MRE/FSR/MCW/TOTM).

    This is not food on the move. It is a shit ton of fiddly bits you definitely have to sit down to prepare and eat. Personally I'd rather three 1000 calorie food items, in just three packages. For drinks, there's water. Toss in some caffinated gum maybe for those who need their drugs in the morning.
    In fact if it was me, I'd make those three meals freeze dried. It's a lot less weight to carry around, assuming you've got water elsewhere. They can be reconsituted with cold water, just takes a bit longer. And if you 'do' have hot water, you've got good meals.

    Hey. you talk at 100 clicks an hour. The mixed energy gel is clearly going to have a Gel like consistency like Jam/Jelly, because that is what they made it into. Jam setter does that. This is an MRE pack. Not what you go to the store and buy to suit your taste buds. These are issued to the Military based on their dietary requirements or what they prefer if they get an option, but with a big pack punch of what they need to survive. These were not designed for you. So stop complaining about the products. I am sure they would be very happy to have something to eat whilst they are on duty.
