Playing alongside the legendary Michael Jordan on the Chicago Bulls, Longley and his teammates were surrounded by a constant frenzy as they won three consecutive NBA championships.
But when the team disbanded in 1998, Longley was unable to replicate the highs of those Chicago years and he retired due to injury three years later.
Returning to Australia, he struggled to adjust to life outside professional sport but eventually found purpose again as an assistant coach with the Australian national team, the Boomers.

If Netflix has half a brain they'll make a deal with ABC and put this in a package with The Last Dance. What MJ said at the end was a long time coming. This doco is every bit as good. Luc is finally gaining his due respect. Well done.

Whatever dude, it was simply my initial thought as Luc had been so overlooked in TLD. The two docs should be seen together. This one explains how significant Longley was to the Bulls success, how he got there and his stature among his fellow Aussies.
@@MeneerHerculePoirot I didn't watched "The Last Dance" yet. If the story was about the whole team, of course they wouldn't be able to dedicate an entire hour to one player (except maybe M. Jordan I guess). And it was the tale of the last season alone. But I expected the producers would have put lights on individual players' stories. Specially the kid. Who came from Australia.

@@HungarianDerrickRose I agree. I don't watch soccer as much as some other sports, but just cause you are great in your given sport for your given size and athleticism, it doesn't not make you a great athlete. Otherwise boxing would just be stacked with heavy-weight boxers and nothing else.

I went to college with Luc at UNM. He was the most loved player on the team referring to us Chicanos as mates. We would sit on the dorm roof having beers. So happy to see that he is doing well.
That's a great story man, I watched his Bulls teams as a teenager. Also why would call yourself a conquistador if you have Mexican ancestry?

Cartwright being the first center for the Chicago Bulls.

Luc Longley is never been forgotten as one of the valuable members of the Chicago Bulls NBA Championship. He's contribution to the success of Chicago Bulls organization as a player made the 3 time Championship the best in NBA history.

I saw nba finals 1997 and 1998 at my home in Jakarta, it was so fantastic to saw MJ, Pippen, Rodman, Longlay, Stevecarr and other Bulls Players playing on that day. And im bless with what i saw

Let us remember that era is still the era of good Centers, Luc was important because he is an excellent freethrow shooter, mobile defender and good passer.
People forget he had to guard - Ewing, Dream, Shaq, Robinson - Everyone of them Hall of Famer players. Great doco and good to see Luc get his due. Good work ABC.
The game changed not the amount of talent, centres need to be more mobile and to be able to stretch the floor now.

When you know Shaq and MJ gives you props that's respect
Luc's passing skills and ability to set screens, especially when guys were cutting in that triangle offense made him *perfect* for Phil Jackson's system and the other players the Bulls had on that squad.
MJ: “He mattered, he had an impact on me. He made me better as a player, you know as a person …” Bravo ABC. What a fantastic story. You should do a part 3 based on Luc's reaction to the Boomers winning bronze at the Olympics. Maybe with Andrew Gaze and Bogut as well. Just a thought. 👍🏻😃

you can see in Luc's expression, when MJ said that he mattered to him....such a thoughtful comment made by MJ, I got a bit teary watching this. This documentary is just top notch thank you ABC

As a Chicagoan, LUC was part without a shadow of a doubt, the greatest basketball team ever assembled, he was meant to be a bull , he got the job done , we loved luc, I saw him play at United center & watch him in the playoffs on packed taverns , bars , celebrating on the streets of Chicago, it was a beautiful time to be from Chicago & a bulls fan , cool mellow dude & yea he was a banger in the court , im glad he got his due recognition, the GOAT said it best , he mattered & he would do it all over again, man those were fun times in Chicago , thank you luc longley , love you legend

Not only was Luc so important to the Bulls but he was THE driving force for Australian Basketball to leap to the next level and THE reason Aussie are so present in the NBA today.

Regardless of his massive achievements in sport, Luc is clearly someone to aspire to be like, humble, thoughtful, sensitive, caring, he's a role model to how you should try and be as a person.

I love that the release of this Australian Story on Luc Longley, coincides with Australia’s first ever Olympic medal. He was and is an integral part of making Australia a top 3 nation in basketball.
Damn, the last MJ interview brought me to tears. What a demonstration of respect. You are inspiring, dear Luc Longley. How many humans have you inspired ? I hope you feel pride within yourself.
It's absolutely striking how down to earth and humble he is almost to the point of fault. I hated seeing him struggle to appreciate his own role in one of the greatest teams in NBA history. He did exactly what the team needed him to do to accomplish true greatness at their craft. And he paid a stiff price for all the physical abuse he absorbed so that the rest of the team could do their jobs properly. I'm glad he seems to have come around and is making peace with his accomplishments. Just because things didn't end the way he wanted(because of the things he sacrificed for the team to win championships and make history) doesn't diminish the greatness of his story or lessen his importance to that team and to his country and the history he helped make and the road he helped pave for future Australian basketball players to make it to the NBA. Truly a wonderful story about a wonderful person and a fantastic documentary. Thank you for making this for all the fans of this man and this team.
Well in Australia there is a thing called Tall-poppy syndrome which is almost ubiquitous to the Australia language of saying that all poppies should grow together and if want grows taller than the others, it is cut down to size.
Good stuff and not just Aussie players but other international big men especially
As an Australian, I like Luk Longley and am proud of him for his accomplishments, and commend him for being a nice guy with a friendly nature.
However...
Longley should've averaged 14ppg, 10 rpg, 3apg, at his size, considering he played many minutes as the starting Center for Chicago.
He did pass well, and could shoot inside, but he lacked drive.
When someone is a professional, on the greatest team of all-time, playing alongside the greatest player, also Pippen and Rodman, with Phil Jackson's wise counsel and guidance, he should have flourished much more!
Luk could've picked their brains, and diligently absorbed all the wisdom from MJ, SP, and DR, to become an all-star potential player who could box out and rebound much more efficiently for his size.
People can be "nice" off court, and ferociously vicious on court. Many players in Australia would love to have his opportunities, height and size.
Aussie players like Shane Heal played much more tenaciously and would've utilized his body much more. If Shane was Luk's height, he would have been a perennial NBA all-star.
When you're paid multi-millions to be a professional basketballer, it is expected to take the game much more seriously.
Many Aussies sympathize with Luk for one reason; because he is Australian. If he were any other nationality there would NOT be so much support for him.
MJ's affectionate grand gesture of brotherly inclusion towards Luc, shows the rare dynamic which was at work between these men.. .
They're all living legends
Stuff like this is one of the reasons why I love the ABC. I can't imagine a commercial network taking the time and resources to tell this story so well. Not when they fill a couple of hours with some house renovation competition filled with highly compensated product placement.

Growing up in Chicago and with the Bulls, I never knew much about Luc. Now I’m glad he got slighted in the Last Dance. This 2 part series is amazing and I couldn’t stop watching. I see a lot of similarities in Luc’s personality and struggles within my own life. Now I know enough about Luc to say what a cool guy and amazing person he is!
I remember when my father showed me the tapes of the 97/98 Bulls when i was like 6 years old and among the fascination for MJ, Rodman and Pippen, there was an instant connection to Luc Longley because he really made the impression of the nicest guy you could ever meet. This bloke really paved the way for the other Aussies to the NBA. U wouldn't expect a bloke from WA would play with MJ and win 3 titles. The NBA also made him the highest paid Aussie athlete at the time. What a career this bloke had a dream come true

I just watched 2 parts of a Documentary on Luc Longley who I group up watching as an 80's kid and couldn't be happier. Great man, Great Story, happy for him, his family, and Australia. That was absolutely marvelous, a must-see complement to The Last Dance, this one was probably more touching - MJ's words at the end effectively an 'I'm sorry Luc' from a fierce competitor who never, ever, wants to give an opening or show a 'weakness' that his enemies could exploit.
This has NOTHING to do with the last dance. It is the story of a young man trying to achieve his dreams, achieving it, feeling empty ,leaving it, and learning to live and love himself. It is a HUMAN story, everything the last dance wasn't.

As an 8, 9, 10 year old Bulls fan in 95-98 I didn't appreciate what Luc brought to the team because of all the superstars surrounding him. But as a 34 year old man, I wish I could grab a beer with him and tell him what a joy it was to watch him play. He was such an underrated rock for that team. I hope he continues to find peace and enjoyment in his retirement.

Great story. I did feel bad when I didn’t see anything about him on Last Dance. This documentary fulfill the whole picture. Glad that MJ also participated in this. I think he did feel bad about leaving Luke out as well.

You know when the Bull's reign ended, every fan on the planet I think felt that sadness and loss, how much more for Luc and the players. Yeah, most adore MJ and when you adore MJ, you also adore and remember every other player in that team. Luc Longley is one unforgettable name in basketball history, esp for bulls fans. The Bulls meant and continues to be part of our lives. For many, including myself, it's the best years of my childhood, probably, the best time of our lives.

That whole ending was priceless, this 2 part doc was as good as the Last Dance.
Luc seems like a really special human being.
He was the absolute right personality for that team full of dynamic egos, with the perfect coach to blend it all together. I'm extremely happy for Luc that he eventually found peace with it all and learned to appreciate and be proud of his role in making it happen. As a Bulls fan who grew up watching it all unfold, it was an amazing ride!
I loved the documentary! I felt it was classy of MJ to dedicate his time on an interview to make up for Luc's exclusion from the Last Dance - people ought not to think that he didn't consider him important as other teammates were not given much time in it, who were by the way in the U.S., whereas he was not. Luc is a gentleman and didn't make a problem out of the situation and I feel the fans should do the same.

Oh. Here was I thinking there wouldn't be a basketball documentary that would possibly meet the heights of The Last Dance. I was wrong.
I actually agree, this comes very close and actually shows MJ in a more empathetic and genuine way
While The Last Dance was entertaining, it was clearly a Michael Jordan propaganda piece. This is an honest story about how basketball and the NBA impacted a man's life. It's far more genuine than The Last Dance.
Thank you Australian Story for reminding us just what a legend Luc Longley is. He certainly deserves all these accolades and more.
Luke was the Yin to MJ's Yang in the most perfectly balanced sporting team ever. Luke's contribution to that dynasty cannot be underestimated and so rewarding for him that it has been so well acknowledged and packed up in this documentary.

So much respect for Mike. I can see by watching this that those that shared his journey mean way more than perhaps they may ever know. Luc was always a sports hero of mine and his journey with the Bulls the main reason why I love this game so much now. Am glad to see Luc back involved in the game and it’s a shame that Mike isn’t able to be more involved now as well.
He owns an NBA team and still doing a lot for the game of baseball in general. A little Google search would refute what you opined.

I understand that MJ was difficult player to play together but I think he really had respect to his teammates including of course Luc. He was starting center of 3 peat Bulls, nobody forgets him.

You just can't give props to Luc enough, ironically enough it's all played out perfectly in a way that has just suited his personality and work ethic and just who is as a person down to a tee.
Couldn't be happier for the bloke, end of the day his kids and family must be so proud of him and he must be so proud of himself, thats the Aussie dream that Luc Longley personifies now.

I grew up in Chicago a Bulls fan. Luc is still a hero in Chicago. Anybody affiliated with those teams is. I wondered where he was when I watched Last Dance. If you were fan you know he was a key member of the team.

What a really great documentary. That was a brilliant story. Luc shows there is room for every personality type at the top 🙂. MJ is the GOAT... But it doesn't make him the best person. Loved this!
Thank you, ABC "The Last Dance" Doco finally feels more completed! Those interviews of MJ, Phil, Scotty and Steve feels sincere. The fact that MJ was willing to be interviewed and acknowledged that Luc should have been in his Doco was a sign of respect to Luc as one of the key players and he does value his contributions to the Bull dynasty, that might not be the case back when they were playing together. Seeing the dialogue between them feels like closure.
What an unassuming, charming, legend of a sportsman, dad and human. So glad the current crop of Boomers had Luke Longley to look up to as an inspiration to punch through our medal barrier in Tokyo. I think the older MJ has got he’s realised how much he put his teammates through & how he needed them…mj had one mind set win at ANY cost,he knew he had to toughen Luke up to go up against Shaq etc…..I think luc suffered PTSD after mybe…

Here is a little back story that may or may not have heard. They approach MJ manager thru email and he declined. Luc was told that Manager decline so he shot a direct email to MJ and he quickly agreed without hesitation. They quickly set it up Date and Time with a little coaching on how to approach and talk to MJ. When you go thru same experiences with someone it becomes a bond whether you like them or hate them one thing is certain a respect is form and a bond is made.

Is well known that if you say or do the wrong thing he will cut ties permanently. Ask Barkley. This is why Pippen won't step on his toes as mad as he is about the last dance doc.

Just like the thousands of people who watched a Chicago Bulls game during the three-peat, every time Luc shot the ball, I would yell out "LUUUCCCCCCCC"! Man, those were the times. Luc was a great Bigman for the Bulls. This was such a great docu. Thanks for making this!

Luc is a very humble person with a huge heart. I enjoyed watching him play in the 90s when I was in high school.

This would have to be the best Australian story ever produced by the ABC.. it needed two parts because it was such a compelling story.. Kudo‘s to the produces for putting this together.
