What I love about MJ's mentality is that it doesn't just apply to sports. You can use this in school, pushing yourself to get better grades than the next guy in order to get into the best college, or business, pushing your team to lead the most successful company. The Bulls first 3-peat was the only dynasty without a top big man until they enforced no hand checking in 2004-2005 - the league did it to help perimeter players because they realized TV ratings were better when the play was more dominated by perimeter players.

I think either we have become so goddamn soft....or it's a case of people who have never played competitively, who will never understand what it's like in the locker room and practice, that voice their ignorant opinions. I mean he is their leader, not their friend, nor their lover. They are professionals who have to do a job, and if some players mail it in, Jordan will push you. Like any great leader. Tbh, MJ didn’t need to explain himself on how he went about it back then. He did it his way and he’s a champion. Undefeated in the finals, 6 times, and has more accolades than any other player in history.
Even as a teen growing up I always noticed how the Bulls were one of the very few teams (the ONLY one I noticed actually) that utilized their entire bench throughout the season and in tight games as well. It was a stark difference between them the the rest of the league. I always noticed it and attributed it to Phil growing up. Now I can see MJ had a lot to do with it as well in pushing them like crazy. Which resulted in them being better, more confident in themselves and each other, which in turn got them playing as a TEAM. Sure they fed MJ all the time cuz he was the driving force and leader, but all of them played their roles and contributed. That’s leadership and the true GOAT. 🙌🏽
I am from Croatia and I remember Kukoc after retirenement doing an interview and saying how most of the times practice was harden than the actual games and now we all see why. And he also said despite the toughness and all he would never trade those years for anything. Honestly why not put 100% into something you are getting payed for handsomly and will only be able to do for a limited number of years... Dont leave anything on the table give it your all.
Mj never gave up on his team no matter what level they were in...he didn't run away from them looking for better players or team...he built them up....
MJ set the tone and set the standard for everyone to follow. He challenged his teammates in practice to find guys who will go to war with him on the court. To build character, to not be phased in hostile Playoff environments and to not fold nor crumble under pressure. It was all to develop chemistry and a deep level of understanding of each others roles/strengths & weaknesses. A chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link, same concept can apply to a team.

This guy was a straight up gift from god for our entertainment. The greatest athlete of any sport ever, but also as charismatic as it gets. People could not get enough. So disappointing he retired at 35 and didn't keep playing. If he wanted, he could have won 10 chips in a row. I think the 2000 Kobe/Shaq duo would have brought a stop to his reign because he would have been just too old to deal with that kind of energy. But still. He no doubt could have had 10 chips.

Jordan knew he was the best player on the team obviously. But he also knew that he had other teammates as well to help him out. Shooters, rebounders, defensive purpose.... So him being hard on EVERYONE during practice was all about pride & standing up to him. Jordan saw it as if you can stand up to me & we battle during practice, when it's time for a real game, Jordan can rely on the bench players for however many minutes they can play so he can rest...also if you see someone weak, u gotta toughen them up to your level mentally. MJ was one of the hardest practice players ever, if that could be measured but shows how much he wanted to improve and make his teammates better. The best in any sport will be remembered by teammates as being asses, jerks or whatever invective you can think of but it made everyone around them better.
People can say what they want about him after seeing "The Last Dance." It all boils down to what one of his teammates said, "It worked!" Hence, why he is considered one of the best, if not "The Greatest!"

Once MJ bought into Phil's system, his goal was to motivate the guys to win. While his ego didn't allow for him to lose, his focus was on those around him.

I think either we have become so goddamn soft....or it's a case of people who have never played competitively, who will never understand what it's like in the locker room and practice, that voice their ignorant opinions. Even as a teen growing up I always noticed how the Bulls were one of the very few teams (the ONLY one I noticed actually) that utilized their entire bench throughout the season and in tight games as well. It was a stark difference between them the the rest of the league. I always noticed it and attributed it to Phil growing up. Now I can see MJ had a lot to do with it as well in pushing them like crazy. Which resulted in them being better, more confident in themselves and each other, which in turn got them playing as a TEAM. MJ set the tone and set the standard for everyone to follow. He challenged his teammates in practice to find guys who will go to war with him on the court. To build character, to not be phased in hostile Playoff environments and to not fold nor crumble under pressure. Go to all time scorers, MJ’s number 1 and two dudes who started their careers in the 50’s are 2 and 3 then there’s Lebron... His best skill is passing. 95% of metrics have some form of MJ or Lebron at 1/2. In terms of individual talent, It’s MJ and Bron and everyone else. Their is a reason some of these guys get insecure

MJ was just 100 percent focused on winning and did what he felt was necessary to get the team ready. If you notice, he was about the team and playing within a system. Once MJ bought into Phil's system, his goal was to motivate the guys to win. While his ego didn't allow for him to lose, his focus was on those around him.
Like a real commander - leading from the front. Greatness with absolutely no room for compromise and with the skills to back it up and lead by example.
